All Are Brothers-The Red Cross Story

In 1859 Henry Dunant was a 30 year-old Swiss businessman traveling through northern Italy. He was working on a proposal(提议),which he hoped to share with the Emperor of France. The business venture(冒险)he dreamed about was in Algeria and it needed the full support of the Emperor. To gain this support, Henry had to follow the Emperor to Italy where he was waging(发动)a bloody war.

When Henry arrived in the town of Castiglione he was shocked to see the results of the latest battle-“The Battle of Solferino”.Forty thousand men lay dead or wounded.

Completely untrained for such a situation, Henry helped the nurses and used his wagon(车辆)to transport supplies. He wrote letters to his friends in Switzerland for help.As he worked alongside the nurses, he realized they were completely overwhelmed(淹没)by the number of men needing help.He frequently heard them repeat a phrase that would stick with him for years to come-Tutti Fratelli. The phrase simply meant“all are brothers”, and the nurses would say it to make sure everyone received equal treatment regardless of which army they came from.

Emotionally exhausted, Henry returned home to Geneva but struggled to forget the trauma(伤害)of Castiglione. His dreams of business in Algeria faded(减弱).He knew he had to do more about the inhumanity(不人道)of war and decided to write a book about the situation in Castiglione. In his book, A Memory of Solferino, published in 1862, he called for trained professionals who could provide relief to the wounded during war, relief without fear of attack.

Henry was a good speaker and writer and decided to put these talents to use in support of his cause.Additionally, he mailed copies of his book to governmental leaders throughout Europe.Four men from the Geneva Public Welfare Society joined Henry and organized a conference on the topic in 1863.36 people representing 14 European governments attended. The next year they did it again. That session became known as the Geneva(日内瓦)Convention. The group also agreed that the symbol of the relief worker during times of battle would be a red cross on a white background. This symbol became the name for the organization-“The Red Cross”.

Nation after nation agreed to the principles established(制定)in the Geneva Convention, and today Red Cross are operating in 178 nations. They've worked to serve millions of people.

Former US. Vice President A1 Gore, who came close to winning the presidency two years ago, said he will not run in 2004, and probably will not have another opportunity to seek the White House.

Though Gore would have been a frightening Democratic(民主党的)main runner, his decision to give up the 2004 race probably helped his party' s chances in the general election against President George W. Bush, Democrats said.

In nearly two dozen interviews after Gore announced his plans, Democrats dutifully claimed their party had lost a top candidate, but one after another, they praised Gore for taking an early exit from a primary race he could have won, sparing them a repeat.

The country of Chile is struggling to recover from one of the most powerful earthquakes in history. The quake struck the South American nation early Saturday morning. It registered 8.8 on the Richter scale.Ex-perts say the earthquake in Chile is among the five most powerful earthquakes ever recorded.

The epicenter of the earthquake is about 70 miles north of the city of Concepci6n.The area has been rocked by dozens of aftershocks since the big quake hit on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet updated reports on the toll the earthquake has taken.“It’s an enormous catastrophe,” she said.Countless buildings and roadways have been destroyed or badly damaged.Rescuers continued to work around the clock to find survivors who may be trapped under the rub-ble of fallen buildings.Government officials estimate more than 2 million people have lost their homes.

The earthquake in Chile comes less than two months after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that Haiti suf-fered in January.Although the earthquake in Chile was more powerful than the one in Haiti, the damage is unlikely to be as severe.Earthquakes are more common in Chile, and many buildings and homes there are constructed to withstand tremors better. Also, the area of Chile most affected by this earthquake is not asheavily populated as Port-au-Prince, where the epicenter of the Haitian quake was located.Furthermore, Chile is one of South America’s richest, best-organized countries. Its government has more supplies and people available to effectively respond to national emergencies.

The energy released by the quake caused shock waves to roll across the Pacific Ocean in the form of tsu-namis(海啸)that have the potential to do great damage to coastal areas. Some of these waves struck the Chilean coast, causing major damage to seaside towns.Coastal communities in Russia,Japan, and the Unit-ed States were concerned, too, but there were no reports of severe damage from the waves that eventually reached the countries’shores.

C.
