Punishment is a term used to refer to any change that occurs after a behavior that reduces the likelihood that the behavior will occur again in the future. Punishment is focused on reducing or getting rid of unwanted behaviors. Punishment can be effective in some cases.  小题1: Prison is one example. After being sent to jail for a crime, people often continue committing crimes once they are away from prison.
Why is it that punishment seems to work in some instances, but not in others?Researchers have found a number of factors that contribute to how effective punishment is. First, punishment is more likely to lead to a reduction in behavior if it immediately follows the behavior.  小题2: It may help explain why sending people to jail does not always lead to a reduction in criminal behaviors.
Another factor is that punishment achieves greater results when it is consistently applied.  小题3:  For example, people often continue to drive over the speed limit even after receiving a speeding ticket. Why? Because the behavior is inconsistently punished.
小题4:  One of them is that any behavior changes that result from punishment are often temporary(暂时的). Perhaps the greatest one is the fact that punishment makes people not perform certain actions, but it does not actually offer any information about more appropriate or desired behaviors.
Another thing to consider about punishment is that it can have unintended and undesirable consequences. For example, approximately 75 percent of parents in the United States report hitting their children. 小题5:  For this reason, psychologists suggest that any short-term gains from using punishment should be weighed because it may produce potential long-term consequences.
A.Punishment also has some notable disadvantages.
B.Parents and teachers consider punishment an effective tool.
C.Prison sentences often occur long after the crime has been committed.
D.There are two types of punishment, positive punishment and negative punishment.
E. In fact, it can be difficult to administer a punishment every single time a behavior occurs.
F. However, you can probably think of situations where punishment does not reduce a behavior.
G. Researchers have found that this type of physical punishment can lead to antisocial behaviors among children.

Well-done on an Exam
Do not underestimate the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination. The closer you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and attaining key information. But do not overdo it.   小题1:   An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your first exam, get into the habit of being up and read to work. It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.
On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack everything you need ( pens, pencils, erasers, etc), then make your way to the examination hall in good time. 小题2:
Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax. When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading through all the instructions and questions, paying particular attention to key verbs such as “discuss”, “compare” and “evaluate”. 小题3:  It is always wise to allow 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected: after all, examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical(模式化的) answers.
小题4:   If you need something else to focus on to help you collect your thoughts, choose a fixture in the room, such as the ceiling or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted.
Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the discussion by other students. 小题5:
A.Try not to look at those around you, or at the clock.
B.When you get home, read the examination paper through and look up the other words you didn’t understand.
C.Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important.
D.Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.
E. Go and have a well-earned rest---then prepare the next exam.
F. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people’s anxiety can be contagious(传染性的),and you may suffer from undue(过度的) panic.
G. If possible, you can arrive early and communicate with those worried students and help them overcome their anxiety.

E. Creativity not Being Something Born With
F. Effective Ways to Develop Students’ Creativity
The Case for Creativity — Encouraging Children to Think
Creativity is the key to a brighter future, say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this vital skill in children.
小题1:
If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as practically essential: masking tape. Drew worked for the company, known as 3M. At work he developed a sticky-side substance strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to pursue the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew perfected the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake: Now 3M encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking and developing new ideas. Experts say if we teach our children to think creatively, they will be better able to function in tomorrow’s society.
小题2:
Creativity is not a natural ability, nor is it necessarily a characteristic of high intelligence. Just because a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce original ideas that are good for something.
小题3:
Unfortunately, schools have not tended to promote creativity. With strong emphasis on test scores and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators sacrifice creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can’t recognize ways to apply it to new situations. They may know their multiplication tables, for example, but they are unable to apply them to story problems.
小题4:
In some schools, however, educators are recognizing the problem and are trying their best to encourage creativity in their students. Some teachers are combining the basics with activities where the students must use their imagination. For example, instead of simply asking WHEN Columbus discovered the New World, teachers might ask students to think about what would have happened if his trip had taken him to New York first instead of to the Caribbean area. With that question, students would have to use what they know about Columbus, what they know about New York, and what they know about the Caribbean. Teachers feel that even if the answers seem silly, it’s OK, that sometimes being silly is an essential step toward creativity.
小题5:
From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their consequences. Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money but not automatically help them too much if they make the wrong decision. This may be confusing for the child, but that is all right. This is because one of the most important traits of creative people is a very strong motivation to make order out of confusion.
