The goal of the yearly competition is to accurately repair a car that has been disabled on purpose:
Responding to the call, "Gentlemen, start your engines, if you can" at 9:15 a.m., the teams ran to 50 cars
with the same mechanical problems. They had 90 minutes to find and repair many "bugs" in the starting,

their car across the finish line, winning the contest after judges determined that they had removed all of
the bugs.
Bradley J. Bolton and Aaron Clay were able to get their car started in less than 30 minutes. In feet,

Honesty is the best policy, as the English saying goes. Unfortunately, honesty often leaves us when no
one is watching, British psychologists reported last week.
Researchers at UK's Newcastle University set up an experiment in their psychology department's coffee
room.
They set a kettle, with tea, coffee and milk on the counter and hung up a sign listing the price for drinks. People helping themselves to a cup of tea were supposed to put a few cents in the box nearby.
The scientists hung a poster above the money box, and changed each week between pictures of
gazing (注视的) eyes and pictures of flowers. The researchers found that staff paid 2.76 times more for
their drinks when the image of the eyes was hung.
"We were shocked by the size of the effect," said Gilbert Roberts, one of the researchers.
Eyes are known to be a powerful perceptual (知觉的) signal for humans, scientists say.
"Even though the eyes were not real, they still seemed to make people behave more honestly," said
Melissa Bateson, a behavioral biologist and leader of the study.
Researchers believe the effect throws light on our evolutionary(进化的) past. It may arise from
behavioral characteristics that developed when early humans formed social groups to increase their
chances of survival. For social groups to work, individuals had to co-operate, rather than act selfishly.
"There's an argument that if nobody is watching us, it is in our interests to behave selfishly. But when
we're being watched we should behave better. So people see us as co-operative and behave the same
way towards us," Bateson said.
The new finding indicates that people have a striking response to eyes. That might be because eyes
and faces send a strong biological signal we have evolved to respond to, Bateson said.
The finding could be put to practical use. For example, images of eyes could ensure ticket sales on
public transport and improve surveillance(监视) systems to deter antisocial (反社会) behaviour.
1. The story is written mainly to __________.
A. warn you to behave honestly whether you are alone or not
B. explain the root of cheating in exams with no teachers present
C. describe how the experiment in Newcastle University worked
D. inform us of a strong reaction that people have to eyes
2. The experiment carried out in Newcastle University made researchers think that _______.
A. honesty is not the best policy
B. evolution has a big influence on our behavior
C. humans have to form social groups to survive
D. people are more relaxed when not being watched
3. From the text, we know that ________.
A. no one acts selfishly when being watched
B. the function of eyes is not only biological but social
C. the image of eyes worked as well as the picture of flowers
D. a waiter was there serving people drinks in the experiment

                                                     The Meanings of Dreams
Sleep and dreams have interested people for centuries. Scientists are learning more about sleep, but
they still know very little about why we dream.
1   First, we have most of our dreams during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. At this time, the
brain is very active. Second, everyone dreams - even if we cannot remember doing so when we awaken.
2   While we are asleep, it works more slowly and sometimes puts our thoughts and memories together
in strange ways.
3   Some believe that our dreams are associated with thoughts and feelings that we experience
while we are awake. Many dream researchers think that a dream about death, for example, is really
about an important life change.    4   Dreams about a car or travel often represent feelings about your
own life. Dreams about teeth - especially broken or loose ones may indicate stress and fear. Dreams in
which you are flying often represent freedom or escape.
Researchers think people in our dreams can tell us something about ourselves. If the person in the
dream was yelling (叫喊), for example, maybe you are angry.    5
There is still a lot about dreaming that we do not understand. By learning more about our dreams, we
may learn more about ourselves.

A. Dreams may be more important than sleep.
B. Scientists do not know for certain why we dream.
C. If he or she was terrified, then maybe you are afraid of something.
D. Modern research can tell us some important things about dreams.
E. There are three things you should pay attention to to have a sweet dream.
F. Finally, a part of our brain helps us to understand daily experiences we have.
G. Dreams about telephones are thought to be about giving or receiving an important message.

You are standing in the kitchen and a voice says, "Add a little more salt to that soup." Yes, it's always
nice to have someone help you when you're cooking. But this voice is not from a man. You are alone!
Then where does it come from? Is it from a ghost? No, this isn't a ghost kitchen-it's the kitchen of the
future.
Scientists are working to improve everything in the kitchen, from fridges to tables, and even the ways we
cook. They are making a system. It will help a person cook a meal. You don't need cookbooks. You can hear how to cook food.
The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner. It looks at the foods in the fridge. It will order more milk
from the store when your milk has gone bad or there is no more in the fridge. The gloves will test the
temperature of everything they touch and say, "Need to cook longer" or "Hot and ready to eat". If you
leave them on the stove by mistake, they'll say, "Fire!" Even the knives and spoons will speak. For
example, if your food is bad, the knives and spoons will tell you not to eat it.
The future kitchen may look wonderful, but it's not cheap. The multimedia fridge costs about 8,000
dollars. So even though high-tech kitchens are no longer a dream, not everyone can afford one.

1. In the kitchen of the future, there is a ______ helping you.

A. system
B. man
C. ghost
D. servant

2. In the future, you can cook by ______.

A. reading

Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales
of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the
beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild
animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories.
Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories
through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a
chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change.
Jacob Riis was among the first photojournalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the
poor lived. Riis believed that poverty (贫穷) caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point.
A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine's
pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children.
Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science
to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling.
Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an
actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture.
As historical and artistic documents (文献), photos can become more important over time. Today
photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish (发表) them
in books and on the Internet.
1. The underlined word "They" in the first paragraph refers to _____.
A. beauties
B. photos
C. goods
D. events
2. The photos of the small children by Hine show us that photos _____.
A. are also works of art
B. are popular ways of reporting news
C. often shock the public
D. can serve as a force for social change
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A. News with pictures is encouraging.
B. Photos help people improve
C. News photos mean history in a sense.
D. People prefer reading news with pictures.
4. The text is mainly about _____.
A. telling the story through picture
B. decorating the walls of homes
C. publishing historical papers
D. expressing feeling through pictures

Do you know how to be a street smart? Being street smart means knowing how to keep yourself
safe from strangers when you're alone or with other kids.     1
Most strangers aren't dangerous and wouldn't do anything to hurt kids. Unfortunately, though. some
strangers can be dangerous, and it's impossible to tell who'ok and who's not.     2    That's why it's
important to follow these safety rules all the time:
    Make your whereabouts known.
The adults who are taking care of you need to know where you are and when you'll be coming home.
        3
It's more fun and safer to do things with friends. Traveling with afriend whenever you can is a good
idea, and traveling with a group of kids is even better.
       4
Safe spots are places where you can stop if you need help. Like the houses of kids you know, the
houses of your parents'friends, police stations, libraries, and fire departments. When you're walking or
riding your bike, make a mental note of the safe spots along your route. That way, you'll know where
they are in case you ever need one.
        5
You're probably been told lots of times that you should not shout and keep quiet. But when you think
you might be in danger, it'a the perfect time to be noisy! If a stranger gets close to you, follows you or
tries to grab you, shout as loudly as you can and try to get away. People in the area will hear what's
going on and help you, so make plenty of noise.

    A. Stick with a friend.

    D. Shout"help"when necessary.
    E. Go to school with your friends.
    F. Make much noise if you are in danger

Fear is an emotion like others such as happiness,  anger,  hurt,  sadness. We need emotions to process
information we receive and decide how to respond.Being afraid of fast cars,  for example,  is something
that might protect us from harm.Being afraid of the consequence of a choice may prevent us getting into
trouble.
Fears in young children commonly center on certain animals like snakes or big dogs.Fears are caused
often because of experiences or ideas expressed by others,  and at times,  the media. Many normal fears
during the early years,  like men with beards,  or large dogs,  disappear with age. Those relating to
personal failure and ridicule (嘲笑) remain through adulthood and may need special help to overcome.
Children's fears are often small,  but that doesn't mean they should be dismissed as trivial (微不足道的). They need to be recognized and accepted as real for that child.Only when we help children
understand their fears can they grow normally in their ability to settle them.
Research shows that as a child grows up,  the center of his fears changes a lot.Things like divorce,  a
teacher who "shouted at me",  people with guns,  bullies,  big boys,  or "making fun of me" top the list of
childhood fears."
We cannot always prevent these experiences from happening,  but it is essential that children be
allowed to freely express their emotions without judgment.Sympathy and a caring listener will help ease
pain of these fears.Read books and stories to your child about children who have experienced similar

Go ahead, talk to your dog.
As many a dog owner will prove, our furry friends are listening. Now, for the doubters, there is
scientific proof that they understand much of what they hear.A border collie called Rico can fetch at
least 200 objects by name, researchers in Germany say.The dog also appears to learn words for new
objects as easily as a 3yearold child would. Its wordlearning skill is as good as that of a parrot or
chimpanzee.
In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided
them randomly into 20 sets of 10 objects each. The dog waited with one of his owners in one room,
while an experimenter put a set of 10 objects into another room. Then, the owner told the dog to fetch
one of the items.  The dog had to go to the other room and bring the object back
In four trials, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right.Because the dog couldn't see anyone to get visual
clues about what to bring back, the scientists concluded that he must understand the meanings of certain
words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a
room with seven toys whose names he already knew. The dog's owner then told him to fetch the object,
using a word Rico had never heard.
In 7 out of 10 trials, Rico picked the right object, suggesting that he figured out the answer by
process of elimination.A month later, he remembered half of the new names, which further impressed the
researchers.
Rico is probably smarter than the average dog, the scientists say.For one thing, he's a border collie,
a breed known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9yearold dog has been trained to retrieve toys by
their names since he was 9 months old.
It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say.Even if they do, they can't
talk back.Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweettalk your pup every now and then. You might just get a big, wet
kiss in return!

1. It is implied that________.

A. Rico is probably cleverer than the average dog
B. Only a few dogs can talk back to its owner
C. if a chimpanzee is trained, it can also recognize the names of objects
D. All dogs can understand words

2. How long is it since Rico's owner began to train him?

A. nine months
B. 3 years.
C. over nine years.
D. more than eight years.

3. Rico can do all the following except________.
A. understanding the meanings of certain words
B. picking the right object by process of elimination
C. remembering all of the new names he learned
D. retrieving toys by their names
