We believe that there is more to education than preparation for a job. Children must be prepared for all aspects of their adult life such as work, leisure, personal relationships, creative activities, coping with money matters, independence, parenthood and so on.

Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to provide an education which took no account of the needs of employers.

What type of training does the business world regard as important?

Many young people applying for jobs were, in the employer’s opinions, very weak in the basic skills of handwriting, grammar and spelling. Though additional education at university level improved the students general ability, a report states,“In basic skills the standards remained stubbornly low.”

It is debatable(有争议的)whether standards have declined(减弱)in recent years. What is certain is that employers do not believe the standard is now high enough. Do technological changes make greater demands upon the student’s abilities?

We should also remember that the job expectations (展望) of young people have increased. The girls who would have once become shop assistants or hairdressers now want to be secretaries. Boys who sought an apprenticeship(学徒)20 years ago now desire to an engineering degree. But it is still the same girls and boys with the same degree of ability. No wonder there are problems in reaching the “necessary standards” of the business world.

Many employers believed that it was important for teachers to have experience outside the world of college and school. They should work for a while at some other kind of job “to see how the world of business and commerce differs from their own”.The teaching profession and society in general needed a greater understanding of manpower needs and therefore of “the desired” direction of the education system.

1.In the writer’s opinion, education should______.

A. pay more attention to students’ academic(学术的)ability

B.only meet the needs of employment

C.be suitable to all aspects of being an adult, including employment

D.focus on grammar

2.“the same girls and boys” in Para.6 refer to______.

A.those who are likely to be unemployed

B.those who have just left middle school

C.those who are looking for jobs far beyond their abilities

D.those who might have become shop assistants, hairdressers and apprentices in the past

3.It’s suggested that teachers should______.

A. never change their jobs

B.spend more time on their school work

C.improve their teaching methods

D.get some work experience outside school

答案:1C2D3D
解析:

1、根据文章第一段“Children must be prepared for all aspects of their adult life…”这句话可以判断出来。

3、本题可以根据文章最后一段的说明来判断。

We are going to describe one way to build a rooftop garden that does not even require
soil. Four things are needed for a small rooftop garden. One thing is a roof that can support
the weight. Another is grass cutting. The third thing is a sheet of plastic in which to spread
the cut grass. And the last thing is a box about eight centimeters deep and made out of four
pieces of wood.
Once you are sure the roof is good, cut and collect some grass. Then lay down the
plastic where the garden box will go. The four-sided box can be as long and as wide as
needed. Place the box on top of the sheet of plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Next,
add water and walk on the cuttings to press them down.
After about three weeks, the rooftop garden is ready for planting. Put the seeds directly
into the wet grass cuttings. This garden is a good place to grow peas, tomatoes, beans, onions
and lettuce. If the box is deep enough, potatoes and carrots will also grow.
It is important to keep the grass wet until the plants begin to grow. When the plants are
growing, they will need watering every day, unless there is rain. And they will need some liquid
fertilizer. Also, seeds and new plants must be protected from insects and birds. Rooftop
gardens are increasingly popular, and not just to grow vegetables. They keep buildings cooler
in the sun, so they save energy. They can also extend the useful life of a roof.

七.阅读理解

We live in a digital world now, and a student's technology needs have changed. For the early years, say when you are in primary school, you can get by with no technology at all. Even if you have a computer, it's a good idea to get children familiar with libraries. At this age, trips to the library are like family outings.

As you get closer to middle school, a computer with Internet access becomes more of a necessity. Teachers will often give assignments that require a student to use the Internet for research. After a computer, technology choices for students become more difficult to make – especially when it comes to cell-phones. Kids will beg their parents for a cell-phone, especially in middle school. For many parents, it's a safety issue: They want to know that their kids can reach them quickly if necessary. For teachers, cell phones can be used to record lessons when students are absent. But many teachers dislike cell-phones. Some kids send messages or have talks in the class. Sending messages also raises the problem of cheating on exams. More and more schools are now forbidding the use of cell-phones.

Many kids see iPods as necessary things to have. iPods are great for music, but do they do anything good for your children’s education? Maybe they do. That’s the opinion of Doug Johnson, an educator for 30 years. Johnson says that educators should accept all new forms of technology in the classroom, including iPods. “Some do more with their cell- phones than we can do with our laptops,” he jokes. “I don’t think we should be afraid. The truth is that it’s easier to change the way we teach than to change the technology habits of an entire generation.”

C. buy iPods to listen to music                D. go to libraries to read more books

A. They want their children to be cool.   B. They think cell-phones be helpful to their study.

C. They want to keep in touch with their children.

D. They want their children to keep up to date.

3. The following are all reasons why many teachers dislike cell-phones EXCEPT ____.

  A. cell-phones can be used to cheat on exams

B. schoolchildren will send messages during class

C. cell-phones can be used to record lessons

D. schoolchildren might talk on them during class

4. What does the underlined word “that” refers to?

  A. iPods can be used to listen to music.    B. iPods can be helpful for children’s education.

  C. iPods can be used to play games.       D. iPods are necessary for children’s lives.

We all know that certain oils are healthier than others, but your oil health goes beyond just the type.
The health of your oil can be related to how you use it too.
Each type of oil has what is called a "smoke point". The smoke point is the specific temperature at
which the oil starts to break down,or in more technical terms, its molecular structure begins to change.
These molecular changes result in changes in flavor,as well as changes in nutritional value-specifically,
the nutritional value of the oil starts to reduce, changing what once may have been considered an
especially healthy oil, like olive, into one that is unhealthy.
The higher an oil's smoke point is,the higher the temperature of the oil can be.As a result, each type
of oil should be used for the cooking method that is most appropriate to its individual smoke point and
heat tolerance. Here is a quick guide for the next time you reach for your favorite oil.

Heat During  Cooking Oil Best Use
Low to Moderate Coconut
Corn
Olive
Peanut
Sesame
Walnut
Baking (low heat)Light
Sauting Pressure
Cooking Salads
Medium Heat Macadamia
Nut Safflower
Baking
Sauting
StirFrying
High Heat Grapeseed
Sunflower
Soybean/Soy
Deep Browning
DeepFrying
Note that the above table represents oils that are refined (精炼的). Most oils we buy are refined.
Refined oils tend to have much higher smoke points than when they are unrefined. They also differ in
nutrition and flavor.Unrefined oils are more nutritious and they tend to be much richer in flavor.
When it comes to extremely high heat cooking, always choose oils which are refined.

1. What determines whether an oil is healthy or not?

A. Whether it's refined or not.
B. Its smoke point.
C. Its molecule.
D. How you use it.

2. Which of the following might be a better choice to make a healthy salad?

A. Refined walnut oil.
B. Safflower oil.
C. Unrefined olive oil.
D. Sunflower oil.

3. Healthy oil can become unhealthy if________ according to the passage.

A. you keep it for too long
B. it is heated well beyond its smoke point
C. it is refined
D. its flavor is changed

4. The author wants to tell readers that________.

A. oils are related to health
B. oils' value depends on their smoke points
C. "certain oils are healthier" is relative
D. oils' flavor and nutrition are connected
