8.The term"helicopter parents"refers to"a style of parents who are over focused on their children".
Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed,from baby steps at age 1,homework at age 8,college application at age 18,employment issues at age 25to family problems at age 30,40 or even older.They constantly shadow the child,always directing his behavior,allowing him zero alone time.
Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons.Worries about the economy,the job market,and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their child's life in an attempt to protect them.Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate with their own children.When parents see other overinvolved parents,it can cause a similar response.They feel that if they don't involve themselves in their children's lives,they are bad parents.
The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire.To give an example,the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen.Mary called the landlord(房东)to install an alarm system,but before she could finish the negotiations(协商),her mother rushed in and demanded action."I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord.We could have gotten it done ourselves.She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated,"says Mary.
Obviously,overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite.In the long run parents are actually damaging their child's basic skills to deal with matters independently.It makes the child feel lacking in confidence,less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own.They're winning the battle,but actually losing the war.

29.What's the purpose of helicopter parents'overparenting?A
A.To do something good for their children.
B.To make their children not ignored.
C.To help their children find a good job.
D.To get rid of the pressure from other parents.
30.What can we learn from the passage?D
A.Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life.
B.Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children.
C.Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.
D.Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.
31.What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?B
A.The bad effects of helicopter parenting.
B.How we can avoid being helicopter parents.
C.Different opinions about helicopter parenting.
D.The reasons for the development of helicopter parents.
32.What is the author's attitude towards"helicopter parenting"?D
A.Uninterested.
B.Objective.
C.Positive.
D.Disapproving.

分析 文章主要讲述了家长教育孩子的一些方法方式.

解答 29.A推理判断题.根据第二段第一句Helicopter parents are always making a big push to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age 1,homework at age 8,college application at age 18,employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30,40 or even older.可知,直升机式家长总是尽力地为孩子提供成功机会.由此可推知,直升机式家长过分管教孩子的目的是为孩子做些有帮助的事.
30.D 细节理解题.根据最后一段第二句In the long run parents are actually damaging their child's basic skills to deal with matters independently.
It makes the child feel lacking in confidence,less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own.They're winning the battle,but actually losing the war.
可知,家长对孩子的过度管教会对孩子的生活造成伤害,让孩子失去自信,失去处理生活压力的能力.由此可推知,作者不赞同对孩子进行直升机式管理.

16.I walked up to the counter.Behind it was a lady with glasses on the tip of her nose and gray hair on her head.
"Excuse me,"I said. She looked up."You're that Clements kid,"she said."I'm Miss Bee.Come closer and let me get a look at you."She pushed her glasses up her nose."I can describe you to the police if something goes missing from the store."
"I'm not a thief!"I was shocked.I was seven,too young to be a thief!
"From what I can see, you're not much of anything. But I can tell you've got potential."She went back to reading her newspaper.
"I need to get these."I said, holding up my list."So?Go get them."Miss Bee pointed to a sign on the screen door."I'm not your servant,so I suggest you get yourself a basket and start filling."

One day before I left, she said,"I know what you think of me,but I don't care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason.I believe my job is to teach every child I meet life lessons. When you get older you'll be glad our paths crossed!"Glad I met Miss Bee?Ha!The idea was absurd…
Until one day my daughter asked me to finish her math problems."If I do it for you,how will you ever learn to do it yourself?"I said.Suddenly,I remembered the lady Miss Bee.

13.If you watched the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, you might have noticed that several athletes, including US swimmer Michael Phelps, had circular bruises on their bodies. These bruises were the results of"cupping therapy"(拔罐疗法)a traditional Chinese medical practice that has been around for more than 2,000 years.Cupping therapy involves attaching circular cups to the skin using suction.(吸出)The suction is created either by heating the cup inside or by using a handheld pump. This suction pulls the skin upward into the cup.Sometimes it can leave dark red bruises, other times there is no mark at all.
Many athletes say that they have benefited from the therapy.Phelps used the therapy in the fall of 2014 and has used it about twice a week since, reported ABC News.Another US swimmer,Dana Vollmer, also believes that"it really helps with blood flow, and helps pull swelling out of different areas."
To figure out whether cupping has many physical effects, last year researchers from Germany carried out a test in which a sham treatment was provided. In the study, the same type of cups was used in the real treatment and the sham treatment. But in the sham treatment, the cups had a hole at the top so that they cou ldn't create the proper suction.
The tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that causes a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either a traditional cupping of"soft cupping".But they were not informed that the so-called"soft cupping"was a sham treatment.
It turned out that most patients correctly guessed which kind of cupping they had received. In both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain. The results suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself, probably resulting from people feeling that the treatment works, the researchers told the LiveScience Website.
The question of whether cupping therapy works still needs to be answered. But because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people,"The therapy can be used as a part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and life-style interventions",Dr Brent Bauer, director of the US'Mayo Clinic Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program, told LiveScience.

A.painful

A.It is totally useless.
B.It is satisfactory when it comes to the physical effects.
C.It may depend on patients'belief.
D.It just makes the pain worse.
31.According to the last paragraph, which statement is true?B

17.It's said that you don't know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes.And you also don't know what it's like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington,D.C.,to L.A.in July,I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people.I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring,confusing connections,and we flew directly into small,manageable Long Beach Airport.Even though my father could walk,I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance,which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington,I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint.I wished he'd had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club.Better yet,I wish I had flown with him both ways.As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane,I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
Things can go awry on a plane trip.And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie.When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport,a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection.But somehow Margie,who had Alzheimer's disease,disappeared.
I didn't need to worry about my father wandering away; at 82,his mind was sharper than mine.But his hearing was poor,so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement.Fortunately,everything went just fine.Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior,I'll know better.I hope there will be a next time.

25.Why did the man buy nonstop tickets?C
A.His father was tired of flights.

A.Disappointed.
B.Delighted.
C.Worried.

A.be amused.
B.carry on as usual.
C.live up to one's expectation.
D.be away from the correct course.
