Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and
other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students
who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved
grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame.
After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime,
drug-taking, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar
youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting different kinds of fields
of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say
that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of
society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make
a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage matters-young people
who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a
shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make a bigger difference for those students who need
help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best
when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities, skill building meaningful
involvement, expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in
the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environment,
encourage personalized involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school
programs have a promising future, how they are designed and run matters.

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to
make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and
heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy
source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.
"To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density (密度)", said Jae Kwon,
assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. "The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery
can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries."
Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and
thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanreal systems (M/NEMS). Although
nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.
"People hear the word 'nuclear' and think of something very dangerous," he said, "However, nuclear power
sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and
underwater systems."
His new idea is not only in the battery's size, but also in its semiconductor (半导体). Kwon's battery uses
a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.
"The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy
can damage the lattice structure (晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor," Kwon said, "By using a liquid semicon
ductor, we believe we can minimize that problem."
Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor,
Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery's power, shrink
its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of
human hair.

Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like
a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws (爪) on its wings when young. They
build their homes about 4.6 m above the river, an important feature (特征) for the safety of the young. It is
called the hoatzin.
In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on
the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its
nearest relatives are the common bires, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though is only found in the young.
Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using
these four claws, together with the beak (喙), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like
primitive bires must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lost their claws.
The drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20:00, but in
April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two seven birds for
producing purposes.

Your parents always tell you that a solid education is the key to a successful future. For those of you that
will be graduating from high school, the commitment (承诺) you made to complete your schooling has been
fulfilled. Another few years in some college classroom just doesn't sound too attractive; so what are your
choices? Let's see, Choice 1-You can live with your parents, leech on to them, and basically do nothing. Or
Choice 2-You could get yourself a job. Of course, there are other choices, but for this little discussion, we'll
just suppose that they aren't relevant.
Okay, so Choice 2 is obviously going to be more productive. You're finally into the workplace and will be
entering the real world. What would be a good place to start? Well, hopefully high school helped to give you
some sort of an idea of what type of job you would like to enter. If not, then it would be a good idea to speak
with an advisor or a person working in the field you may be interested in before you jump into a job that you
won't like. Gaining knowledge on a particular line of work beforehand can be very effective by helping you in
your search to find that job that you will enjoy doing. Another reason to research jobs and get some hands on
work is related to the fact that it will also be helpful in buffing up your resume and providing you with some
valued experience. Internships (见习) or volunteering are usually a good place to start.
If you are ready to begin a job after high school, the main benefits will clearly be saving money from high
college expense and happily making a living in your chosen jobs. From another point of view, jumping into the
workplace is sometimes the only way to see for yourself if you are ready to work a 40-hour week yet. If you
decide that full time work is not what you are ready for, then this may suggest that you should go back to
school and get a degree. Besides, a college degree will usually equal higher wages.
1. The underlined phrase "leech on to" in the first paragraph might mean "_____".
[     ]
A. help
B. depend on
C. quarrel with

[     ]
A. Going to College
B. Where Should I Start
C. The Advantage of Starting Work Earlier
D. Jumping into Work after High School
3. The advantages of starting work right after high school include the following except _____.
[     ]
A. saving money
B. making sure if you are really ready to work
C. getting higher wages
D. getting to know if you should go back to school
4. Which of the following isn't mentioned in helping you find a suitable job?
[     ]
A. Ideas about jobs gained in high schools.
B. Experience in work.
C. Advice from teachers and parents.
D. Internships and volunteering.
5. The writer intends the passage for readers who are _____.
[     ]
A. high school students
B. college graduates
C. high school graduates
D. graduating high school students

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants
can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight.
Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to
live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us. If you look carefully at the plants around
you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering
plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two,
three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without
seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽).
Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores
are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new
plants.
1. The main idea of the first paragraph is that _____.

[     ]

A. plants are important for life
B. plants cannot grow without air
C. there are many plants in the world
D. we can not live without water
2. Plants can make food from _____.

[     ]

A. flower, water and air
B. water, sunlight and air
C. air, water and soil
D. air, sun and light
3. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

[     ]

A. Of all living things animals are most important
B. Spores are seeds
C. All fruits of flowering plants have seeds
D. Without plants, man will die out
4. This passage may be taken from _____.

[     ]

A. a medicine book
B. a novel
C. a science magazine
D. an experiment report

When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in
the chemicals in its blood stream. If the danger continues, it will defend itself, or it will run away as fast
as possible. Something like this also happens to people.
When we are excited, angry, scared or aroused by other emotions, our bodies go through many physical
changes, all of which make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them
take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger-or hit somebody-and regretted it
later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then
wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep the feelings of anger,
sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illnesses can develop,
and you can feel disturbed badly inside. It can actual1y be bad for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck
them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened
the cupboard, chances are that you'd see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They'd be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can
pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those
bananas.
1. By taking a cat as an example, the author wants to show us that _____.
[     ]
A. animals can't control their feelings
B. people can't control their feelings
C. people's physical reactions are like those of animals in a way
D. our bodies go through many physical changes in certain situations
2. It's mentioned in the passage that human beings get into trouble because _____.
[     ]
A. we are not as alert as animals
B. we sometimes can't control our feelings
C. we always do something wrong to other people
D. we don't pay attention to our physical changes
3. The author wants to tell us in the last two paragraphs that _____.
[     ]
A. we won't be able to completely get away from our feelings
B. we should treat emotions like bananas in a cupboard
C. feelings will gradually disappear when we hold them in
D. it's good for our health to keep pleasant feelings
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
[     ]
A. Frightened Cats and Human Beings
B. Feelings and Bananas
C. Deal with Feelings Wisely
D. Express Feelings Freely

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that
men's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.
The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women's longevity may be linked
to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.
"We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,"
said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
"Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third
of those cells die and are not replaced in men," said Goldspink. "This is part of the ageing process."
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old
woman's heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one's.
"This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men," said Goldspink. They
studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons
to remove the confusing influence of disease."The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the
male heart," said Goldspink.
The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed
that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.
1. The underlined word "longevity" in the second paragraph probably refers to "_____".
[     ]
A. health
B. long life
C. ageing
D. effect
2. The text mainly talks about _____.
[     ]
A. men's heart cells
B. women's ageing process
C. the gender difference
D. hearts and long life
3. According to the text, the UK scientists have known that _____.
[     ]
A. women have more cells than men when they are born
B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat
C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age
D. women never lose their pumping power with age
4. If you want to live longer, you should _____.
[     ]
A. enable your heart to beat much faster
B. find out the reason for ageing
C. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy
D. prevent your cells from being lost
