【题目】Weird Homes We All Wish We Live in
Your home is one of the biggest purchases you’re going to make in your entire life, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live somewhere you enjoy. If you’re looking for the weird, the wonderful, or just odd, then these houses are the top of the list.
Upside Down
Like the previous upside down home, this is the type of concrete house that is more interesting to really see from the outside than it is to actually live there. The door is near the top. If you want to live here, you are going to have to deal with the crowds exploring daily.
Satellite Home
Having an entire side of your house made of glass is just asking for a rock to be thrown by the local children. However, it also offers the best view surrounding the scenic home. The inside appeared to be separated into multiple tiers, with each tier broken down into various rooms.
UFO House
This home is located within Taiwan at present. For those who have wondered what it would be like to be kidnapped by aliens and forced to live within their ship for a few years, this house should offer some similar experience.
New Age Tree Fort
If you grew up a flower child, then chances are you either adapted that lifestyle into your own or would prefer to forget it. If it’s the former, then the tree fort-style home would be perfect to live within. It’s centered perfectly in the middle of a forested area, supported by metal beams, and built from strong wood.
【1】Why can Satellite Home offer the best view around itself?
A. Because its outside is very interesting.
B. Because one side of this house is made of glass.
C. Because viewers can stand on its door near the top of the house.
D. Because it is centered in the middle of a forest.
【2】The underlined word “kidnapped” probably refers to “___________”.
A. taken away B. let down
C. helped out D. brought up
【3】What building materials are used for these weird homes according to this passage?
① Concrete ② Rock ③ Metal ④ Wood
A. ①②③. B. ①③④. C. ②③④. D. ①②④.
【答案】
【1】B
【2】A
【3】B
【解析】
试题分析:文章主要描述介绍了三种“奇怪的房子”。
【1】B细节理解题。根据有Satellite Home下面的话Having an entire side of your house made of glass is just asking for a rock to be thrown by the local children. 可知Satellite Home有一面是玻璃制的所以可以提供最好的视觉去观看风景,故选B。
【2】A推理判断题。根据上下文句意可知此处是指对于那些希望被外星人带走到他们飞船上的人,所以taken away符合句意,选A。
【3】C细节理解题。根据文章 this is the type of concrete house that is more interesting to really see from the outside than it is to actually live there. 以及 It’s centered perfectly in the middle of a forested area, supported by metal beams, and built from strong wood. 可知这些房子分别是由故① Concrete ③ Metal ④ Wood建成,故选C。

【题目】To Mr. Alcohol
You’ve been with us for a long time. I won’t forget all the pain you’ve caused for us.
Do you remember the night you almost took my father’s life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He’s addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn’t the only one hurt by you that night.
Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen completely. “I’m so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit (呕吐). “I’m sorry,” they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won’t happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped (洗胃). Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you.
Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn’t realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And it’s all your fault.
I wish you’d walk out of my life forever. I don’t want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you’ve caused. Sure, you’ve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you’ve caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring(诱惑)in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please.

B. To show how much alcohol can hurt people.

D. To show the great fun that alcohol can bring to people’s life.
【2】What did alcohol do to the author’s father?
A. It made him crash into two other cars and took his life.
B. It made him drink too much and he had to get his stomach pumped.
C. It made him kill two other people when driving.
D. It made him get into a car accident and badly injure himself.
【3】The underlined word “intrigued” in paragraph 3 probably means________.
A. startled B. fascinated
C. accepted D. warned
【4】What is the tone of the article?
A. Humorous. B. Doubtful.

You are smartest in your 20's; around 30, your memory begins to go down, particularly your ability to perform mathematical computations(数学计算). 【2】 Your vocabulary at the age of 45, for example, is three times as great as when you graduated from college. A National Health survey agrees: after the age of 30, we become more realistic and do not view happiness as a goal in itself. Depressed people can be very difficult to be around, and yet they need more than the usual amount of support and understanding from their friends and family.
The anger and lack of concern that a depressed person may have for people close to him or her can be very disturbing to someone who's trying to help. _____【1】______. Withdrawal from others can make it nearly impossible to encourage a depressed person to enter into activities that may help pull him or her out of the depression.

【题目】阅读理解。
Children who read for pleasure at the age of 10 have far higher vocabulary scores by the age of 42.
Researchers at the Institute of Education(IOE)have found that the most crazy childhood readers score far higher on vocabulary tests 30 years later. The new study suggests that children who read for pleasure carry the intellectual(智力的)benefits with them far into adulthood.
“The long-term influence of reading for pleasure on vocabulary that we have identified may be because the frequent childhood readers continued to read throughout their twenties and thirties,”says lead author Professor Alice Sullivan at the IOE.Researchers followed 9,400 British people from the age of 10 up to 42.Their vocabulary was tested using a simple quiz which asked participants to match up words to the most similar meaning.
Those who had regularly read for pleasure at 10 scored 67 percent at the age of 42,while infrequent childhood readers scored only 51 percent.
The IOE study also found that what people chose to read as adults mattered as much as how often they read. The greatest improvements between ages 16 and 42 were made by readers of ‘elegant’ fictions such as Booker Prize winning novels. And they found that readers of quality newspapers, including online versions, made more progress in vocabulary throughout their lives than those who read tabloids.
In addition, generally speaking, the adult readers who especially read broadsheets(宽幅印刷品)scored 76 percent on the assessment compared to 57 percent amongst those who didn’t.
【1】Why did frequent childhood readers have higher vocabulary scores?
A.Because they are born intelligent.
B.Because they formed the consistent reading habit.
C.Because they were crazy about pleasure.
D.Because they had a comfortable childhood.
【2】What may not affect the adult readers’ vocabulary scores?
A.The contents of reading.
B.The design of the page.
C.Versions online or not.
D.The frequency of reading.
【3】What does the underlined word“tabloids”mean in the text?
A.Newspapers of low quality.
B.Newspapers of high quality.
C.Elegant fictions.
D.Large vocabulary.
【4】What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Intelligence has a great influence on vocabulary.
B.Reading materials matter much for children.
C.Broadsheet newspapers are best for boosting vocabulary.
D.Children who read for pleasure have larger vocabulary when they grow up.
