From New Delhi to Beijing, commuters(通勤者)spend a lot of time stuck in traffic. In the United States,Los Angeles(L.A.)and San Francisco tie for second place(并列第二)for having the worst traffic problems.Washington,D.C.is in first place with the worst traffic, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
In L.A..drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be.Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams.He said,“It’s a prison of cars. There are too many cars, you can’t move around a lot.I live more than 65 kilometers from my office at the University of Southern California.in L.A..I’m always late even with the help of a navigation(导航)system.I thought it would be appropriate to do something to solve it.”
Therefore,he and PhD student Ugur Demiryurek decided to develop an app for that. The ClearPath app claims to do what other navigation systems cannot.Professor Shahabi says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house.
ClearPath uses two and a half years worth of traffic data from 9,000 sensors(传感器)on the roads of L.A..It also collects information on accidents.
Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath,he says,a driver can enter what time he wants to leave on a specific time and date, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road.
Ugur Demiryurek says they will launch the free ClearPath app for roads in L.A.in two months. In a year,he and Professor Shahabi hope to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.
“I thought always that L.A.had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai,Beijing,Seoul,Tokyo, believe it or not,Singapore,Hong Kong definitely are examples that can immediately use this.”

Rare birds in the UK have been living far better than the more common birds over the last decade due to the efforts of conservation organisations, according to a new assessment.

The research shows almost 60% of the 63 rare birds that live in the UK have increased over the last 10 years.

By contrast, only about one third of common species have increased over the same period. Just 28% of rare birds have decreased over the same period, compared with four out of every 10 common birds. The rare birds described in the assessment with increasing populations include the osprey (鹗) and corncrake (秧鸡). All of these birds are subject to conservation action.

The declining common birds include the nightingale, swift (雨燕), house sparrow and red grouse (苏格兰雷鸟). These are suffering declines for a variety of reasons, including changes in farming practices.

Dr David Noble, from the British Trust for Ornithology, said: “That some of our rarer birds have responded to targeted conservation action is great news. It shows just what can be achieved. What we need to do now is to continue the good work and use some of the lessons we have learned to help our more common birds.”

Dr Mark Avery, the conservation director of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), said: “Over the last decade we've enjoyed some great conservation successes, including removing some threatened species from the World Conservation Union's Red List of Thratened Animals and increasing the populations of red kite, osprey, etc. However, these successes are countered (抵消) by continued declines of some widespread species.”

The overview of 210 native birds has been produced by a group of conservation organisations, to mark the publication of The State of the UK's Birds report, which is in its l0th year. The report was published by the RSPB for a group of conservation organisations.

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The decline of widespread birds is not worrying for the UK.

B. The UK has got some practical experience of bird conservation.

C. Changes in farming practices contribute to the increase of rare birds.

D. Half of common birds have decreased in the past ten years in the UK.

We can learn from the passage that Dr David Noble      .

A. hopes that conservation organisations will change the way they work

B. is quite disappointed with the result of the new assessment

C. is losing confidence in conservation organizations’ action

D. has high hopes for the increase in bird population in Britain

Which of the following can best explain Dr Mark Avery's words?

A. The UK should not be satisfied with what they have achieved.

B. The UK should share their experience with other countries.

C. What conservation organisations do is far from satisfactory.

D. The RSPB is responsible for the decrease of common birds.

The passage is most likely to be found in a book about      .

A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.

A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises(出现) from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.

There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar(奇怪的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl-friend.

No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

41. The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is _______.

A. repeated without any change          B. treated as a joke

C. made some changes by the parent      D. set in the present

42. According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is _______.

A. in a realistic setting                   B. heard for the first time

C. repeated too often                       D. told in a different way

43. The advantage claimed(提出) for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it _______.

A. makes them less fearful

B. develops their power of memory

C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of

D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs

44. The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that _______.

A. fairy stories are still being made up

B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales

C. people try to modernize old fairy stories

D. there is more concern for children's fears nowadays

45. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _______.

A. they are full of imagination

B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth

C. they are not interesting

D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach

BEIJING, Nov. 26—U.S. dollar hit another record low against the euro on Friday, with the European currency climbing above $1.32 for the first time. The green-back fell to its lowest in nearly five years against the yen the same day.

By 1943 EST, the dollar was trading at US$1.3265 per euro, compared with US$1.3270 in thin late New York trade. It was at 102.55 yen, little changed from New York after touching 102.37, a level not seen since March 2000, in London.

Japanese Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki repeated his warning against dollar weakness, threatening to take action against sudden moves, but market participants said such verbal intervention (口头干涉) had long lost its clout.

Traders were expecting market liquidity to remain thin on Friday because of the extended U.S. holiday.

In such thin trading, many said a fall in the dollar past 102 yen and US$1.33 per euro was a real possibility.

Referring to recent currency movements as “brutal”, European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet, who is the most vocal European policymaker on dollar weakness, is due to make comments in Rio de Janeiro, along with ECB council member and Spanish central bank governor Jaime Caruana.

Introduced in 1999 as the common currency for 12 European countries, the euro initially(最初) dropped against the dollar but has risen some 60 percent since hitting an all-time low of 82 U.S. cents in October 2000.

What does “the green-back” refer to in the first paragraph?

A. U.S. dollar                                           B. Another record

C. The euro                                              D. European currency

How did Sadakazu Tanigaki feel about dollar weakness?

A. Excited                    B. Puzzled             C. worried                    D. Disappointed

The underlined word “brutal” probably means ______.

A. cruelty                            B. help                 C. criticism                   D. apology

According to some people, it was possible for the dollar to trade ______.

A. at 1.3265 per euro                                 B. at 1.32 per euro

C. at 1.3270 per euro                                 D. at 1.331 per euro
