Immediate benefits:

●As a special offer, you may choose any reduced-price books from our new members' book list, to the value of $6 in total (plus postage and packing). By doing this, you will save pounds on the publishers prices.

●Tick the box on your form to order a free watch.

●If you reply within seven days, we will send you another free gift carefully chosen from our book list by our staff.

●Order a DVD from the many on offer in our list, at half the recommended retail price.

●When you've joined:

As a member, you'll enjoy savings of between 30% and 50% off the publisher's price on every book you buy, and what's more, they'll come straight to your door. Your free club magazine arrives once a month, to keep you up-to-date with the latest best-sellers. This means that every year we offer over 1,000 books to choose from. On the Internet, you can find all our titles for the year on our exclusive members' website.

Being a member:

All we are asking you to do while you are a member is to choose four books during your first year. After that, you can decide on the number of books you wish to take.

In each of our monthly club magazines, our experienced staff choose a Club Choice book — a work of fiction or a reference title which they feel is particularly worth buying, and which is offered at an extra-special price. However, if you do not want this book, just say so in the space provided on the form. We will always send the book if we do not receive this.

So, return your application form today, but hurry — it's not every day we can make you an offer like this. To apply to become a member, all you need to do is simply fill in the enclosed form and return it in the postage-paid envelope supplied.

Before you know it, your books will be with you. Please don't send any money now, as we will send you your bill with the books. And remember, you have up to a fortnight to decide if you wish to keep the books you have ordered. You should then either return the books or send your payment.

The Regional Director of the National Heritage Conservation Commission (国家遗产保护委员会) Kagosi Mwamulowe said the Barotse Plains is unique and it deserves to be on the list of the World Heritage Sites.

Mr. Mwamulowe said the Barotse Plains deserves to be included on the World Heritage List because it has a rich cultural heritage which includes the burial sites of former kings.

EVERYONE’S talking about it in American high schools. Whether they are hip-hop fans or just students or just students or teachers who listen to good music of any genre(类型), they all have one thing in common: an obsession with Hamilton, a hip-hop musical about the forgotten founding father of the United States on the $10 bill. What makes this musical so different from all the other ones?

“Everybody is so excited about it.” Mark Madama, associate professor of musical theater at the University of Michigan, said, “It is something for the students. Hip-hop music is what they listen to when they are walking down the street and all of a sudden, now that is also the music that is in musical theater.”

The full title of the show is Hamilton: An American Musical, and it tells the stories of Alexander Hamilton’s life: from a homeless orphan to Washington’s right hand man(得力助手), from an unknown to war hero. The idea of a Broadway musical about a founding father with hip-hop music has gotten enough attention on its own.

One of the most amazing details of this phenomenon is that most of the students have never even seen it. Nazareth High School junior Maddy Schierl has never seen the show live but said she still relates to it deeply. “There is so much emotion in the music that I feel like I have experienced the show’s essence(本质)without even having to see it,” Schierl said.

Students and teachers are finding other ways to fall in love with Hamilton, whether they do it through listening to its music, watching short videos on YouTube or even studying it in the classroom. Katja Stonebraker, who teaches AP US history at Cary-Grove High School, described the musical as “ a teacher’s dream”, Stonebraker plans to use Hamilton more in the future because of the interesting perspective it tells Hamilton’s story from.

“ You see these old dead guys, and they are who you have to memorize and learn,” Stonebraker said,-But I think Hamilton makes history real and relatable.”

1.The underlined word “obsession” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. strong enthusiasm B. great respect

C. lack of interest D. total surprise

2.Hamilton is a musical that appeals to students because______.

A. its story is closely related to students’ lives today

B. it uses hip-hop, which is very popular among students

C. it has been specially designed to satisfy students’ tastes

D. it tells interesting stories from the life of a founding father of the US

3.The example of Maddy Schierl is used to ______.

A. prove that Hamilton is very popular among students

B give an example of people’s comments about Hamilton

C. explore the controversies behind Hamilton’s popularity

D. show that people can connect to Hamilton without seeing it

4.Which of the following statements would Stonebraker probably agree with?

A. Hamilton tells Hamilton’s story vividly and from a different viewpoint.

B. Hamilton is the best teaching material she has ever used

C. Every student will become more interested in history after seeing Hamilton.

D. There will be more musicals about historical figures in the future.

Time for Kids (TFK) gets the great news on the coolest toys for 2014 at the 111th American International Toy Fair.

What’s four days long, bigger than seven football fields, and filled with thousands of toys? It’s Toy Fair 2014!

Each year, hundreds of toy companies from across the country come together in New York City. All kinds of products are shown as a way to know what’s to come in the new year. This year’s trends include oversize toys. “In 2014, everything is really big and really out there,” says Adrienne Appell, a toy-trends expert.

Toy Fair is the largest toy trade show in the Western Hemisphere (西半球). Toy-store buyers go to the event to decide which toys they may want to sell during the holiday season. Members of the media, like TFK, go to the fair to report back on all the cool trends. Unfortunately, Toy Fair is not open to the public.

This year’s Toy Fair was the biggest in its 111-year history. More than 1,000 toy companies showed products from simple card games to high-tech robots. “Larger Than Life” was a Toy Fair favorite. This trend is all about big toys with a big play value.

Though it is all fun and games at Toy Fair, we saw lots of products making a push towards education, with STEAM. That stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This trend includes word games. And of course, we saw some super cool, high-tech games. “Technology is always going to influence toys,” says Appell. “This year we saw lots of 3D games, and robots.”

The USA

Well, imagine how my sister felt when she went off for the first time to New York for a business trip. After a few days she was still amazed at how friendly everyone was to her until she took a taxi back to her hotel one night. First she gave just the name of the hotel, but when asked she said the address too. Then she was asked how to get there, but of course she didn’t know. Imagine how frightened she was when the driver started shouting at her for not knowing the way.

The UK

A friend was in London for a conference. He took a taxi and there were no problems: the driver knew the way and was very cheerful. The problem started when he realized he had stupidly left his laptop on the back seat! He called the company up and, in a panic, went straightaway to their Lost and Found office. He was over the moon to find the laptop waiting for him, and then very surprised that it was one of 2,900 left in taxis over the past six months!

Tunisia

Well, my brother took a Mediterranean cruise(巡游) one summer and had a day in Tunis. He spent most of the afternoon in the Medina buying presents when he suddenly realized he’d completely lost track of time and there was only half an hour before the ship left the port. There had been loads of yellow taxis in the centre so he wasn’t too bothered until he stood on the pavement and waited for one to appear——and of course there wasn’t a single one in sight! Nothing! He questioned a passer-by who explained that the cost for the taxi ride goes up in the evening so the taxi drivers disappear until they can charge higher prices! Luckily for my brother the man then offered to give him a lift and he caught the boat on time!

1.What was the author’s sister’s trip by taxi in the US like?

A. Unpleasing and scary. B. Tiring but impressive.

C. Relaxing and exciting. D. Interesting but strange

2.The underlined part “over the moon” in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “________”.

A. very happy B. extremely sad

C. quite surprised D. pretty annoyed

3.Why couldn’t the author’s brother find a taxi in Tunis?

A. Because it was too late.

B. Because the weather was bad.

C. Because he didn’t know how to call a taxi.

D. Because the taxi drivers disappeared on purpose.

4.What do the three stories have in common?

A. They are all about taking a taxi.

B. They are all about business trips.

C. They are all about great services.

D. They are all about the author’s family.
