Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.
According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.
Think back to the time you took your very first sip (啜饮) of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.
Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to someday develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.
These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.

Every day, all across the nation, as many as one in four children refuse to go to school. The reasons are various. "School Refusal," formerly known as ''School Phobia", is an actual anxiety-based disorder. Many children are vague about their complaints and unable to be sure what is making them anxious, so it is sometimes regarded as typical childhood will fullness. However, the effects of constant school refusal can be far-reaching for your child’s education.
So, where's the 1ine between what's normal and what's not? "You need to look at whether it is affecting the child or family's normal life," explains Christopher Kearny, Ph.D. In other words,
if a child's grades are suffering from frequent absences or a parent’s job is disturbed, it is time to look closely at the issue. Parents should listen carefully to children who say they can’t go to school because of “untestable things" such as stomachaches or headaches. While these complaints alone don't necessarily indicate school refusal, there may be deeper problems if combined with general complaints about school, talks of threats at school and so on.
There are different kinds of behavior in school refusal. Some children are influenced by their friends who skip school to hang out with their friends, showing a sense of rebellion(叛逆).
Some children cling to their mother's, screaming at the thought of having to enter the school bui1ding.
However, that doesn't mean that getting a child back into the c1assroom is impossible. According  to Maryann Roth, a school psychologist and guidance counselor(顾问), parents should attempt to make the child get back to school, no matter how hard it is. Working closely with school officials and possibly a specialist to create a plan is a necessary step.

Fear can be a wonderful feeling in our lives, protecting us from dangerous situations and keeping us safe. But fear can also limit our lives significantly. While it may not be conscious, fear may make us think we are unacceptable or that what we have to offer isn’t valuable. Fear may make us feel that we are not safe being ourselves.

To avoid feeling fear, we may limit our lives greatly, living in tiny boxes. Living this way gives us the illusion(假象) of safety but leaves us with an unfulfilling life of no passion. If we shine a light on many of our fears, we see they have a very limited view of what is “safe” and how to “protect” us. Many of our fears are concerned only with protecting us from humiliation(羞辱) and failure. While these fears are doing their jobs incredibly well, they are doing so with faulty and outdated programming. Many fears we have as adults are trying to protect us as they protected us when we were children. Indeed, many of our current, automatic reactions to fear were actually formed when we were children.

Even so, it’s important not to judge ourselves for feeling these types of fears. If we judge ourselves, we will bury our fears or disguise them. By denying our fears, however, we also deny our energy, creativity and passion.

So what do we do with fear? We recognize the fear for what it is--- a feeling we’ve experienced many times in the past and a feeling we will experience many times in the future. We become very familiar with our own particular brand of fears and how we allow them to control our lives. It is especially beneficial for each of us to become aware of the particular behavior patterns we’ve adopted when we feel fear, so we can look at our reactions with a sense of humor and compassion. Then, if we wish, we can choose a different response, which can be a scary yet very exciting experience.

A.what is the essence of fears

While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports.

When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It’ s indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex. In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim that there really is not a point to it.

Firstly you have to think about such a question— whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic. While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives.

The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly recommend we should deal with it in an appropriate way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary.

1.The author writes this passage probably for        to read.

A. high school students                       B. school teachers

C. parents and teachers                       D. married couples

2. Between sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be        than that of being boy/girl-friends.

A. weaker           B. safer                C. slimmer          D. stronger

3.How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students?

A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic.

B. Studying is far more important than dating in school.

C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage.

D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family.

4.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph might refer to       .

A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school

B. advice given by both teachers and parents

C. the pressure from school lessons and sports

D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes
