【题目】阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Charles Dickens (1812—1870), the great nineteenth century English novelist, was born near Portsmouth. His father ran heavily into debt (债) and when he was twelve, he had to go and work in a factory. The only formal education he received was a two-year schooling at a school for poor children. In fact, he had to teach himself all he knew. He worked for a time in a lawyer’s office. After that, he worked as a reporter in the law courts, and later for London newspapers. His life as a writer of novels began in 1833 with short stories and essays in newspapers, and in 1837 his novel “The Pickwick Papers” made him the most popular author at his time in England.
He was a great observer (观察者) of people and their places because he was concerned about life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. He wrote 19 novels all his life and in many of them, Dickens gave a picture of all classes of England society, showing deep concern for the poor.
Many of his novels like “Oliver Twist”, “David Copperfield”, “Nicholas Nickleby”, “Great Expectations”, “A Tale of Two Cities” and so on drew attention to the unfair social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago. Dickens wished to see improvement in the living conditions of the poor, but failed to find any useful method to achieve that goal.
【1】 Dickens only received a little formal education because ________.
A. he wanted to teach himself
B. he wanted to work and made a lot of money
C. he was too poor to afford any more formal education
D. he needed some working experiences to become a writer
【2】According to Dickens, the society at his time in England was ________.
A. rich B. just C. comfortable D. unfair
【3】 Which of the following novel made Dickens the most popular writer at his time in England?
A. Oliver Twist. B. The Pickwick Papers.
C. A Tale of Two Cities. D. Great Expectations.
【4】 According to the passage, which of the following about Dickens is TRUE?
A. He studied writing novels at school.
B. He wrote more than twenty novels all his life.
C. He began to write fictions when he was 21 years old.
D. He found some good ways to improve the lives of the poor.
【答案】
【1】C
【2】D
【3】B
【4】C
【解析】
本文是一篇人物传记,记述了狄更斯的生活与作品。
【1】C 推理判断题。由文章第一段第二句His father ran heavily into debt (债) and when he was twelve, he had to go and work in a factory.(他的父亲负债累累,他12岁时就不得不去工作)可知,他家太穷了,上不起学,答案选C。
【2】D细节理解题。由文章最后一段中的drew attention to the unfair social conditions that existed in England over a hundred years ago可知,当时的英国社会很不公平,答案选D。
【3】B 细节理解题。由第一段的最后一句in 1837 his novel “The Pickwick Papers” made him the most popular author at his time in England可知,The Pickwick Papers《匹克威克外传》是他的成名作。
【4】C 细节理解题。文章开头提到了Dickens出生于1812年,第一段最后一句提到了他于1833年开始写小说,由此可知C项正确。Dickens只上过两年学,更没有在学校学习写小说;第二段第二句提到He wrote 19 novels all his life可知,他一生写了19部小说;根据最后一段最后一句but failed to find any useful method to achieve that goal可知,他没有找到改善穷人生活的办法,因此A、B、D项错误。

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
India has many festivals, with some celebrations that last for weeks. However, none of them come even close to Holi, India's most colorful and fun festival. Celebrated on the day following the full moon, this year's festival happens to be on March 19th.
As with most Indian festivals, this one also has many different folk stories. Most of them center around the success of good over evil. The most popular one is about a king, who hates his son Prahlada for loving the creator of the Universe-Lord Vishnu. When every attempt to stop him fails, his sister, Holika believed to be immune (免疫的) to fire, joins in the effort by inviting the young boy to sit with her inside a huge fire. Helped by the power of Lord Vishnu, Prahlada escapes safely, while the evil Holika is burned to death. To remember this event, huge outdoor fires are lit in the night before Holi in order to clean the air of evil spirits and to celebrate the death of the evil.
So what's so great about this day? While there are some fun parades (游行) and folk songs and dance performances, the most fun of all is walking to the streets and splashing (泼洒) people with water guns and dry colors and even covering them with entire buckets of colored water. On this day, everybody is fair game, no matter how old or how young.
At about midday, the splashing comes to an end and people living close to oceans or rivers usually take a bath in the water to clean themselves before going home to a delicious homemade big dinner and a welldeserved short sleep, following this full day of fun and activities.
【1】Why does the king dislike his son Prahlada?
A.Because Prahlada doesn't love him.
B.Because Prahlada is rude to Holika.
C.Because Prahlada loves Lord Vishnu.
D.Because Prahlada concentrates on his own success.
【2】Prahlada gets out of danger ________.
A.with the help of Lord Vishnu
B.because of his good luck
C.by beating his aunt Holika
D.using his amazing talent
【3】The underlined phrase“fair game”in Paragraph 3 refers to a person who ________.
A.fights against others fairly
B.enjoys splashing people
C.plays a trick on others
D.is the aim of splashing water
【4】After the fun activities, people living close to oceans or rivers often take a bath because ________.
A.they have got dirty with dry colors and colored water
B.going home with colored water means bad luck
C.they believe clean water will bring good luck
D.taking a bath shows their true love for Lord Vishnu

【题目】
You may have experienced the annoyance of being fined because of parking illegally or finding your car towed away(拖走)after leaving it parked somewhere for a couple of minutes. But now a high-tech car sticker that’s designed to be stuck to a car’s windscreen could help motorists avoid such a situation.
The TowStop sticker sends a text message to a driver when touched by a traffic policeman,to allow motorists to send a reply and give them time to move their cars immediately.Frankfurt-based IT consultant,Daniel Kalliontzis, came up with the idea and is raising money to put his 54(£43) sticker into production.
Car owners can put the sticker inside their car’s windscreen, having set it up with key information, such as their phone number. The slim design will include a sensor(传感器)that, when touched by a traffic policeman, will send a text message warning a driver of a possible fine. The driver could then type a reply for the policeman using a smartphone, which will appear on the sticker’s screen.
The smart sticker system will rely on the good will of traffic policemen and in a way,a German law.The law states:an officer has to choose the most efficient and inexpensive way for the car owner to remove the vehicle. It could be cheaper for the government to call the driver than to tow his car.
Mail Online asked the Department of Transport whether the sticker could be used in the UK in a similar way.A spokesman said,“In England there is no legal duty to warn the motorist before issuing the ticket. However,a policeman does have the discretion not to issue a ticket if he doesn’t think the situation is that bad or he just wants to issue a warning.”
So far,Mr.Kalliontzis has raised just over 3,000(£2,362)of his 50,000(£39,381) goal.If he manages to raise the money, the stickers will be shipped in June 2015.But it appears that car owners using the smart system could get some unnecessary warning messages, because anyone could touch the smart sticker.
【1】The author wrote the third paragraph to _______________.
A.explain how a smart car sticker works
B.advise drivers to buy a car sticker
C.show the importance of a sensor
D.tell drivers how to park a car
【2】We may infer from the text that in Britain _______________.
A.car owners don’t have to worry about a parking ticket
B.smart car stickers wouldn’t work as well as in Germany
C.traffic policemen prefer to call a driver rather than tow his car
D.the Department of Transport thinks highly of smart car stickers
【3】The underlined word“discretion” in Paragraph 5 can best be replaced by“____________”.
A.trouble B.pressure
C.freedom D.opportunity
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
