It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商)follow certain uniform standards for various
features(特征)of clothes. What seems strange, however,is that the standard adopted for women is the
opposite of the one for men.Take a look at the way your clothes button.Men's clothes tend to button
from the right, and women's from the left.Considering most of the world's population-men and women-are
righthanded, the men's standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do women's clothes
button from the left?
History really seems to matter here.Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th
entury, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly righthanded servants, having women's
shirts button from the  left would be easier. On the other hand, having men's shirts button from the right
made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would
be less likely to get caught in the shirt.
Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is still the standard for them.
Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all women's shirts buttoned
from the left,it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer women's shirts that buttoned
from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have
to develop new habits and skills to switch.Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to
appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe
they were wearing men's shirts.
1.What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?
A.It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years.
B.It is different for men's clothing and women's.
C.It works better with men than with women.
D.It fails to consider righthanded people.
2.What do we know about the rich men in the 17th century?
A.They tended to wear clothes without buttons.
B.They were interested in historical matters.
C.They were mostly dressed by servants.
D.They drew their swords from the left.
3.Women's clothes still button from the left today because____.
A.adopting men's style is improper for women
B.manufacturers should follow standards
C.modern women dress themselves
D.customs are hard to change
4.The passage is mainly developed by________.
A.analyzing causes
B.making comparisons
C.examining differences
D.following the time order

It was a very hot summer Sunday. Most of the neighbors were indoors with air-conditioners and color TVs going on. Suddenly, there was a power failure. After about half an hour, most houses had lost their pleasing coolness and people began to come outdoors in search for a gentle breeze. Before long, everyone was sharing all kinds of soft drinks and iced tea or coffee. Food began to appear, someone brought some small tables, and a natural block party developed. All around me, people were talking and laughing, and no one seemed to care that the power is still off. Nor did the spirit of the party die with the end of the evening. It is time for students to sell such things as chocolate bars and greeting cards to raise money for their school, class or club. It is inevitable that they will knock on your door and you will easily hand ever your cash for overpriced items that you really do not want. That is okay, though, because there are many reasons why children should be allowed to raise money for their schools and clubs.
Fundraising(自筹资金) is a great way to help children learn social skills. It is not easy to go up to a complete stranger and ask them for their money. They have to nicely ask for help, show the interested buyer what they have to offer and explain how it will help them in school. If someone refuses to buy an item, that child has to take the failure in stride(从容处理), and that is a learning lesson as well.
Students can learn how to deal with money by fundraising. Of course, it might seem safer for us to take charge of our children’s earnings from their fundraising before it is turned in to the school. However, by making them keep track of it, count it, and make sure everyone pays the right amount, they are learning an important lesson. Dealing with money is important to know about when they are older.
Fundraising helps improve their schools. It is the child’s school. They have to learn there and grow there. Why not let them help in making it a better place? When one of our local schools lacked funding for sports, the students and parents joined hands to raise that money needed. When they succeeded, they felt they accomplished something important.
Fundraising allows for more life experiences for the child. Most fundraising is done for individual classes and clubs. The raised money is used towards things like parties, trips. The children receive the rewards for their hard work at raising the money. Without fundraising, these field trips and special school memories would be missed.
In a word, fundraising helps children a lot in many ways.
