【题目】 It was back in 2014. I learned I needed an operation to remove the tumor (肿瘤). Hearing the word “cancer” was the first shock, but knowing the surgeon would have to cut the front of my neck open was a lot to swallow. I was relieved to learn that thyroid (甲状腺) cancer can be treated if caught early, but 1 wasn’t thrilled it would mean a lifelong scar front and center on my neck.
Back at home, I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I admired my neck, running my finger across a delicate gold chain I wore. Then came a tiny voice, “Mommy!” My then five year -old son. Jack, appeared in the mirror behind me. Our reflection was a big reality check. See, my son didn’t know I had been diagnosed (诊断) with the Big C, or that I was having an operation. I patiently explained my condition to him and told him I would have a scar on my neck after the operation.
I never had any intentions of hiding the scar. I didn’t want my son to think my scar was something to be ashamed of. I was his role model and I needed to set a good example. Bad things can happen, but it’s how you deal with them that matters.
The operation was successful. The recovery process, bearing it all, in the grocery store, out to dinner with family and on the summer camp pickup line, made me realize, if I could get through this phase (阶段),I could bear the scar of survival forever. The scar proves I looked at fear in the face and won.
People will ask about my scar even though it’s a very thin. dull line five years later. That means I have the chance to educate others about thyroid cancer and how they should. self-check their necks and remind their doctors to do the same, at yearly physicals. 【题目】 I took a motor rickshaw to the train station in the city of Belapur. The driver didn't speak much English, but understood, "Belapur Railway Station. ” I had my tabla, a traditional drum from India, my suitcase with my clothes and other essentials. The feeling of flying by cars in this little machine is : as if you are inside a box with tiny wheels, dashing through disorderly traffic.
I arrived at the station safely, and took a heavy breath as I unloaded my baggage before the ticket office. It was the first time that I had taken a local train to Tilak Nagar, where I was going to learn traditional vocal music. Standing in line, I counted at least 20 people staring at me. I bought my ticket, which was only 55 cents for a 20-minute train ride. The prices still blow me away.
When the train came after 15 minutes or so, I got on with all speed, as the train only stops for a few seconds. The locals again stared at me. This was a train especially for local transport. After a while, a young man asked me if he could talk to me. He wanted to know if I was in a band. I stated no, but I love to play tabla. Through the conversation I knew he was a student of engineering with his exams being tomorrow, I wished him good luck for the exams sincerely, as I knew what it means to Indian students to get good marks on their exams. If students do not get good enough scores, job opportunities will be few in a highly-competitive environment.

【题目】 When Wilbur and Orville Wright finished their flight at Kitty Hawk, Americans celebrated the brotherly bond. The brothers had grown up playing together, they had been in the newspaper business together, and they had built an airplane together. They even said they "thought together." However, when the Wright brothers said they thought together, what they really meant is that they argued together. After long arguments we often found ourselves in the position of each having been pulled to the other's side,"
Orville reflected. I don't think they really got mad," their mechanic (机械师) remembered, but they sure got awfully hot."
The skill to get hot without getting mad is critical in life. But it’s one that few parents teach to their kids. We want to give kids a stable home, so we tор blng (兄弟姐妹) from quаrrеlng and we have our own arguments behind closed doors. Yet if kids never get exposed to disagreement, we’ll end up limiting their creativity. As the psychologist Robert Albert put it, the creative person-to-be comes from a family that is anything but harmonious, one with a “wobble (摇晃).”Orville Wright came from a wobbly family. The brothers often watched their father Milton Wright fight with school authorities who weren't fond of his decision to let his kids miss a half-day of school from time to time to learn on their own.
The Wright brothers weren't t alone. The Beatles fought over instruments and tunes. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak argued constantly while designing the first Apple computer. Brainstorming groups generate16 percent more ideas when the members are encouraged to criticize one another. The most creative ideas in Chinese technology companies come from teams that have real disagreement early on.
Children need to learn the value of thoughtful disagreement. We should teach kids that silence is bad manners. It disrespects the value of your own view point and your own voice. It's a sign of respect to care enough about someone's opinion that you’re willing to challenge it. Good arguments are wobbly: a team or family might rock back and forth but it never tips over. If kids don't learn to wobble, they never learn to walk; they end up standing still.
【1】What does the author say about the Wright brothers?
A.They always took advice from their mechanic.
B.They knew little about the newspaper business.
C.They often held conflicting opinions.
D.They kept a very tense relationship.
【2】What sort of father was Milton Wright?
A.Untraditional.B.Generous.
C.Scholarly.D.Sensitive.
【3】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.B.Add some background information.
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion.D.Provide more examples to support his idea.
【4】What is the best title for the text?
A.Conversation matter in a family kidsB.Uncomfortable silence harms Kids.
C.Kids, would you please start fighting:D.Parents, would you please stop arguing?

【题目】 Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, "more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter."
Smell, which dictates the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.
According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites.
In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.
However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.
【1】What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?
A.The category of food smells.
B.The logical part of human brain.
C.The nature of human olfactory system.
D.The relationship between food and feelings.
【2】Which of the following can help people concentrate?
A.Bread.B.Fruits.
C.Coffee.D.Fast food.
【3】What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.
B.Every person has a different pattern of genes.
C.Different people are sensitive to different smells.
D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.Logic and behaviour.
B.Smell and its influence.
C.Sense ability and food tastes.
D.Olfactory genes and its system.
