         Winston Churchill was one of the great men of his age. To show their respect for him, the British
    lawmakers asked a fine artist, Graham Sutherland, to paint Winston Churchill's picture. When it was
    completed, it was presented to him, at a grand affair in the Westminster Hall, at the House of Commons (下议院).
         There is a famous film that shows Churchill accepting the gift. He describes the painting as "a
    remarkable example of modern art", which draws loud laughter.
         In fact he must have been unhappy with the painting. Sutherland later reported that he asked whether
    it was to be painted with a "happy" or "angry" attitude. "Angry," replied Churchill. At the time, Churchill
    was coming to the end of his political life and was unhappy that people wanted him to end his career.
         Some twenty years later it was revealed that Lady Churchill hated the painting so much that she had it
    destroyed. "It was preying on (折磨) his mind," she was reported as saying.
         A leading art critic was asked what he thought about the matter. He said he could understand Lady
    Churchill and had pity on her. Graham Sutherland was a very honest artist, who could only paint what
    he saw. At the time it was painted, Churchill was an old man, worried by the thought that he would have
    to end his political career soon. But Lady Churchill shouldn't have had the painting destroyed. It could
    have been stored away until after their deaths.

         Jaime Alfonso Escalante was considered one of the best teachers in the United States. He was born
    in 1930 in La Paz, Bolivia. He taught math and science in his home country for twelve years.
         In the 1960s, Jaime Escalante and his wife Fabiola came to the United States. During the next several
    years, he learned to speak English and repeated his college education and teacher training.
         In 1974, Mr. Escalante was hired at Garfield High School to teach mathematics. The school was in a
    poor area of Los Angeles, California. Many of the students in the school had serious problems with illegal drugs, gangs and violence. The school was in danger of losing its official approval to operate.
        Mr. Escalante's students were mostly MexicanAmericans from a Spanishspeaking area of the city.
    Many were the worst students at the school and thought to be "unteachable". But Mr. Escalante pushed
    the group to work hard. He told them basic math was too easy and that they had the ability to do harder
    work.
         Jaime Escalante started an advanced math program with a small group of students. Advanced Placement is a program of collegelevel classes and tests. In 1982, eighteen of his students took the Advanced Placement test in calculus(微积分学). They all passed.
        The officials at the testing company suspected the students of cheating. Mr. Escalante protested(抗议). He said the students were being rejected because they were from a poor school. He urged his students to
    take the test again.
         Twelve of the students repeated the test. And again, They all passed. Five earned top scores. Mr.
    Escalante's students went on to become engineers, scientists and university professors.
         Jaime Escalante received many teaching awards. A movie about his success, Stand and Deliver, was
    released in 1988. It influenced other teachers to use his methods.
        Jaime Escalante retired from teaching in 1998 and later moved back to Bolivia with his wife. He died
    when he was seventynine years old.

         One of the best-loved American writers was William Sydney Porter, or O.Henry. From 1893 he lived with his family in a house in Austin, Texas, which is now a museum. Visitors to Austin can see the house. It was saved from destruction (破坏) and turned into a museum in1934. The museum is a good way to learn about the interesting life of the American writer.
         William Porter rented this house in Austin and lived there with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum belonged to the Porters. Others did not. An important piece in the room is the original photograph over here. It was taken there in the house about 1895. The piano
    there goes back to the 1860s. His wife took lessons on it when she first moved to Austin.
         Porter did not start his career as a successful writer. He worked at a farm, land office and bank. He

    dictionary. It is said that he had read every word in that dictionary.
         Later William Porter was forced to leave Austin because he was charged with financial wrongdoing at
    the bank and lost his job. Because he was afraid of a trail (审判), he left the country secretly. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced the trial and became a criminal. He served three
    and a half years in a prison in Ohio.
         William Porter would keep his time in prison a secret. But there was one good thing about it. It provided him with time to write. By the time he was freed, he had published 14 stories and became well known as O.Henry.
         Porter later moved to New York City and found great success there. He published over 180 stories in
    the last eight years of his life.

         Anthony Horowitz was miserable as a child. He was,   as he puts it,   "not very bright" and couldn't
    win the attention of his very wealthy parents,   who preferred his "clever" older brother. At age 8,  
    Horowitz was sent away to an abusive (虐待的) boarding school in his native England,   even though he
    screamed and pleaded with his parents year after year not to send him. "The thought was,   'It'll be good

    intelligence agency MI6.
         Horowitz said he didn't try to write for kids;  it just came out that way. "I have a feeling that's to do
    with purity and simplicity. I give as little information as is necessary to describe the room,   the character
    in the room,   and get on with the action,   " he said.
         That style has also made Horowitz a successful writer of television shows for adults in Britain because,   he says,   writing books for kids is a lot like writing television for grownups. In both cases,   it's all about
    entertaining people with a good story.
         Now,   Horowitz couldn't be happier with his life. He sums up his success: "…you can be anything
    you want to be if you just believe in yourself. I do believe it completely."

                                                             Walt Disney: A Short Biography
         Walt Disney was born on December 5,1901 in Chicago Illinois, to his father Elias Disney, and mother
    Flora Call Disney. Walt was one of five children, four boys and a girl. 
                                                                    
         After Walt's birth, the Disney family moved to Marceline Missouri, Walt lived most of his childhood here.
         Walt had very early interests in art, he would often sell drawings to neighbors to make extra money. He
    pursued his art career, by studying art and photography by going to McKinley High School in Chicago.
         Walt began to love, and appreciate nature and wildlife, and family and community (社区), which were a
    large part of agrarian (农业的) living. Though his father could be quite stern (严格的), and often there was
    little money, Walt was encouraged by his mother, and older brother, Roy to pursue his talents.
         During the fall of 1918, Disney attempted to enlist (入伍) for military service. Rejected because he was
    under age, only sixteen years old at the time. Instead, Walt joined the Red Cross and was sent overseas to
    France, where he spent a year driving an ambulance (救护车) and chauffeuring (驾驶) Red Cross officials.
         Once Walt returned from France, he began to pursue a career in commercial (商业的) art. He started a
    small company called Laugh-O-Grams, which eventually fell bankrupt (破产). With his suitcase and twenty
    dollars, Walt headed to Hollywood to start anew.
         After making a success of his "Alice Comedies", Walt became a recognized Hollywood figure. OnJuly13,
    1925, Walt married one of his first employees, Lillian Bounds, in Lewiston, Idaho. Later on they would be
    blessed with two daughters, Diane and Sharon.
         In 1932, the production entitled Flowers and Trees (the first color cartoon) won Walt the first of his
    studio's Academy Awards. On December 21, 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length
    animated (有生命的) musical feature, premiered (最初的) at the Cathay Theater in Los Angeles. The film
    produced at the unheard cost of $1 499 000 during the depths of the Depression (不景气).
         Walt Disney's dream of a clean, and organized amusement park, came true, as Disneyland Park opened
    in 1955.Walt also became a television pioneer, Disney began television production in 1954,and was among
    the first to present full-color programming with his Wonderful World of Color in 1961.
         Walt Disney is a legend (传奇); a folk (民间的) hero of the 20th century. His worldwide popularity was
    based upon the ideals (理想) which his name represents: imagination, optimism, creation, and self-made
    success in the American tradition. He brought us closer to the future, while telling us of the past, it is certain,
    that there will never be such as great a man, as Walt Disney.
