阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

I had a sudden understanding recently as I watched the movie Life Is Beautiful: certain DVDs ought to carry a warning that they are unsuitable for watching in public. There I was, viewing the Oscar winner on a portable (手提式) DVD player and crying like a widow who freshly lost husband. The last time I cried so hard at a movie was as a kid when Old Yeller died at the end. This time, I was crying on a 7:30 a. m. train to Manhattan. People, understandably, were staring.

As the price of portable DVD players continues to drop, I doubt that public displays of feeling will soon be common on mass transportation and in other places where folks with electronic toys are forced to kill time. There was few better time killers than movies. And just wait until you try a portable DVD player with headphones. Those headphones, by the way, are key; since this is DVD, the sound is CD quality. That makes the overall effect more powerful.

To get the full taste of the experience, I chose two machines from opposite ends of the price range (范围): Sony's new, state-of-the-art DVP-FX1 ($ 1, 500 ) and Aiwa's older XD-DWI ($ 650 ). Given its price, I didn't expect the Aiwa machine to be in the same league as the Sony. I was wrong. Indeed, if your portable DVD needs are like mine, you probably shouldn't even consider the high end Sony.

What are my needs? I want my machines to plug into my TV, so I can use it as a DVD player at home, but also be portable enough to use on the train or even in the car without headphones.

Both machines performed extremely well under bumpy conditions, which surprised me. We were able to watch BOWFINGER while driving over railroad ties without missing a frame. And both machines easily attached to my home television, bringing the intense, digital clarity(高清晰度数字画面) of DVD to the larger screen. Life is indeed beautiful.

Traditionally at the Oscars we take a look back at the artists that our community has lost. This year we lost a true legend, Miss Catherine Hepburn. When one thinks of her, one immediately thinks of her irrepressible(抑制不住的)spirit, her swaggering confidence, but mostly her indomitable(不屈不挠的)sense of humor in the roles she played and in her own life.Who else would say of her craft, “Acting is the most minor of gifts and not a very high class way to earn a living. After all, Shirley Temple could do it at the age of four.”

She was also a pioneer when it came to fashion. In a time when it was really quite radical she wore pants and became so famous for it that when Barbara Walters once interviewed her and asked her quite pointedly, “Kate, you always wear pants, do you even own a skirt?” Hepburn replied, “I have one, Miss Walters, I’ll wear it to your funeral.”
