    2．Sebastian Faulks has written many novels，including Devil May Care，the latest James Bond book．This cutting comes from a very different kind of novel called Charlotte Gray．The setting is a transit （中转） camp near Paris during the Second World War，where a group of people，including two small children，Andre and Jacob，await transport to take them to a concentration camp outside France．Although these people-the‘deportees'of the cutting-are not fully aware of this，they face certain death．
    The Last Night
    Andre was lying on the floor when a man came with postcards on which the deportees might write a final message．He advised them to leave them at the station or throw them from the train as camp orders forbade access to the post．Two or three pencils that had survived the camps search were passed round among the people in the room．Some wrote with weeping passion，some with great care，as though their safety，or at least the way in which they were remembered，depended upon their choice of words．
    A woman came with a sandwich for each child to take on the journey．She also had a bucket of water，round which they gathered，holding out food cans they passed from one to another．One of the older boys hugged her in his gratitude，but the bucket was soon empty．When she was gone，there were only the small hours of the night to go through．Andre was lying on the straw，and Jacob leaned close to him for warmth．
    Five buses had come in through the main entrance，and now stood trembling in the corner of the yard．At a long table …the commandant of the camp himself sat with a list of names that another policeman was calling out in alphabetical order．Andre heard his name and moved with Jacob towards the bus．From the other side of the courtyard，from windows open on the dawn，a shower of food was thrown towards them by women crying and calling out their names．
    Andre looked up，and in a chance angle of light he saw a woman's face in which the eyes were fixed with terrible fierceness on a child beside him．Why did she stare as though she hated him？Then it came to Andre that she was not looking in hatred，but had kept her eyes so intensely open in order to fix the picture of her child in her mind．She was looking to remember，for ever．…

    17．The Gunpowder Plot was conspiracy （阴谋） to kill King James I，as well as the members of the House of Lords and Commons at the re-opening of Parliament．It was designed by a group of Catholics in protest against the anti-Catholic laws that were being introduced by the king．
    Robert Catesby was the leader of the group．It was he and his cousin，Thomas Wintour，and two other friends，Thomas Percy and John Wright，who formed the center of the group．They were joined by nine more men； among them was Guy Fawkes，from the city of York in the north of England．
    Fawkes found a store room directly under the House of Lords and rented it out under the false name of John Johnson．The conspirators stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder there，and Fawkes，who was an explosives expert，was to light the fuses （引信） on 5th November 1605．
    The plot failed because one of the conspirators，Francis Tresham，sent a letter to his relative，who was a member of the House of Lords．The letter warned him not to attend the opening ceremony of Parliament．The letter was passed on to the authorities，who took action．
    Guy Fawkes was found in the cellar on the night of 4th November with the thirty-six barrels and a number of fuses．He was imprisoned and ill-treated，eventually giving away the names of the conspirators．
    Soldiers of the king surrounded Holbeach House，in the Midlands，where they knew the conspirators to be hiding．In the fight that followed，four of them were shot dead，including Catesby and Percy，who were actually killed by the same bullet．The others were imprisoned and hanged along with Guy Fawkes on 31st January 1606．
    These days，on 5th November，children all over Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by building huge bonfires and lighting fireworks．It's a family tradition and an occasion to eat potatoes baked by the flames．There is always a'guy'on top of the fire，a model of Guy Fawkes，dressed in the clothes of the 17th century．

    2．The paper is written in an attempt to discuss what the creative process is．Though much theory has accumulated，little is really known about the power that lies at the bottom of poetic creation．It is true that great poets and artists produce beauty by employing all the powers of personality and by combing emotions，reason，and intuitions（直觉）．But what is the magical synthesis（合成） that joins and arranges these complex parts into poetic unity？
    John L．Lowes，in his justly famous"The Road to Xanadu，"developed one of the earliest and still generally acceptable answers to this interesting question．Imaginative creation．He concludes，is a complex process in which the conscious and unconscious minds jointly operate．"there is …．the deep well with its chaos（杂乱） of accidently mixing images，but there is likewise the vision which sees shining in and through the chaos of the potential lines of form，and with the vision，the controlling will，which gives to that potential beauty actuality．"
    The deep well is the unconscious mind that is peopled with the facts，ideas，feelings of the conscious activity．The imaginative vision，an unconscious activity，shines through the land of chaos，of lights and shadows，silently seeking pattern and form．Finally，the conscious mind again，through will，captures and embodies the idea in the final work of art．In this way is unity born out of chaos．
    Though there can be no absolute certainty，there is general agreement  that the periods in the development of a creative work parallel（与…．相似），to some extent，Lowes's theory of well，vision，form and will．There are at least three stages in the creative process：preparation，inspiration，work．
    In a sense，the period of preparation is all of the writer's life．It is the deep well．It is especially a period of concentration which gives the unconscious mind an opportunity to communicate with the conscious mind．When remembrance of things past reaches the conscious level of the writer's mind，he is ready to go on with the process．Part of this preparation involves learning a medium---learning a language，learning how to write，learning literary forms．It is important to note here that form cannot be imposed upon the idea．Evidence，though not enough，shows that the idea gives birth to the form that can best convey it．It is the vision，according to Lowes，that sees shining in and through the chaos of the potential lines of form．
