It happened to me recently, I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President.A friend I wsa talking to agreed with me that it was,in his words,”a brilliantly written book”.However,he then went on to talk about Mr.Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his back-ground at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't.  In the World Book Day's" Report on Guilty Secrets" ,Dreams From My Father is at number 9.  The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to Lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out) , I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten.  But I am pleased to say that,  un- like 42 percent of peoples I have read the book at number one, George Orwell's 1984.  I think
it's really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie  about having read Jane Austen,  Charles Dickens ,  Fyodor Dostoevsky  (I haven ' tread him, but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why  they lied, the most common reason was to "impress" someone they were speaking to.  This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth !
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella ( ah,  the big sellers, in other words).  Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I' lI come clean: I do thi8 and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).
【小题1】Which of the fokllowing is a "guilty secret" according io the world Book Day report?

A.42% of people pretended to have read 1984.
B.Charles Dickens is very low on the top--tcn list.

When it comes to social behaviour, mammals are in a league of their own. Some birds may form pairs,or even cooperate to hunt, but the complexity (复杂性) of their relationships can hardly compare to those within a school of dolphins,a herd of elephants or a group of humans. What makes mammalian social groups different from a flock of starlings or a shoal of fish,is that in many cases the individuals could recognize each other.Although we may think that  all elephants look pretty much the same,we can easily tell individuals of our own species apart and it has become clear through studies that the same is true of other species.Dolphins have their own signature whistles that act like “names”,and elephants can recognize and greet other individuals they have known but not seen for many years. This is something that only a few species of birds appear to be able to do.
Mammals in complex social groups not only recognize each other as individuals, but also they remember a lot of information about that individual.Social groups often rely on this memory—such as knowing who is dominant to whom, who is related to whom, and who has done what to whom in the past. It’s like remembering who you have lent money to or done a favour for,and who hasn’t repaid that money or has talked about you behind your back. You have to learn who to trust, who your friends are,and who to watch out for.
All this remembering goes on in a particular part of the brain called the neocortex (大脑皮层).If you compare the size of a mammal’s social group with the size of this part of the brain, you will find they are remarkably closely related. This area seems to take a long time to develop fully and animals in which it is very large take a very  long time to grow up to adulthood.During this time, the youngster has to learn all the rules of social behaviour in their group and to piece together all  the relationships between the group members:Knowledge that will be needed to avoid getting into trouble.
【小题1】What is special about a mammalian social group according to the passage?

A.All the individuals cooperate to hunt.
B.The individuals can communicate with each other.
C.The individuals can recognize each other.
D.The individuals form closer relationship.

C.may mistake a member for another
D.have good memories
【小题3】Animals whose area of the neocortex is large________.
A.will have a long period of time before they become adults
B.will spend a shorter time learning the necessary knowledge
C.will learn the necessary knowledge much more easily

【小题4】If the neocortex is larger, the animals________.
A.can live a longer life
B.have a smaller social group
C.have a larger social group
D.have a greater body size

Don’t you just love ice skating every winter?I am sure, that since winter is approaching, your skates are set to come out, just waiting to be used.Impress your friends with your new trick on how to iceskate backwards with the help of these tips.Skating backwards on ice is a bit difficult but once you master the basic, there’s nothing like it.Follow the steps given below and you will be able to skate backwards in no time.

The most important step while learning how to skate backwards,is having enough confidence in yourself and in what you are doing. How can you achieve this?By practice.Just practice rolling backwards down a gentle slop every single day or just by pushing off from a wall or something of that sort. But before you do that, make sure that the place where you are practicing is free from any kind of debris(碎片) because otherwise, you could land up in the hospital due to some accident. While going backwards, just get used to the feeling of moving backwards. One of the important ice skating tips and techniques is that if you feel that you are losing your balance, then scissor(做剪式运动) your skates.Keep practicing this till you are confident about it.
Maintain Speed
Confident now?Great! Now the next step is to maintain your speed. While rolling in a straight line with one skate, with the other try sculling(划桨),that is,keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke(滑动).Now bring the skate which you were using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process.Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling. Now,try the same thing using the other foot.Again keep doing this till you are confident enough.
Increase Your Speed Now
Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed.Try some of your own tricks now.Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.
Scull and Be Aware
While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that simultaneously with both feet.Concentrate on what you are doing but don’t get so involved, that you don’t see where you are going. If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone.

With the crazy smog going on in China, businessmen are now ready to grope for your wallet. “Smog economy” is stimulating a shopping spree on certain products against the terrible weather. Now let’s see what we have on the list to help us through the crisis.
1. Masks
Well, I would say you had better stay indoors to save your lives. PM 2.5 just surged up to 750 in Beijing recently. 3M just sold 220,000 masks of a kind. No.1 best-selling products!
2. Air purifiers
This kind of products is rarely seen in Chinese households in the past. They have become a necessity now. I do like these little gadgets, but they are just too expensive.
3. Oxygen inhalers
I didn’t realize oxygen inhalers also get a cut in the smog economy. As a matter of fact, your oxygen uptake has nothing to with relieving (减轻) the impact of smog. It might even lead to oxygen poisoning when you inhale too much oxygen. So don’t get greedy.
4. Salt lamps
Compared to oxygen inhalers, salt lamps are even worse. Some stores are selling the products at several hundred yuan, saying that they can release negative ions(离子), reduce radiation levels and purify the air. The lamps mainly contain sodium chloride. The boiling point of sodium is about 800 degrees centigrade and that of candle is 500. So how on earth can negative ions be released at only 500 degrees?
5. Plants that absorb smog
Yeah, right. Plants Vs Smog. It is scientifically justified (证明) that some plants do absorb pollutants from the air. Money plants and calla lilies are among the best-sellers in the market. Even if they don’t work, it’s good to have some plants in the house anyway.

The Swiss army knife is a popular device that is recognized all over the world. In Switzerland, there is a saying that every good Swiss citizen has one in his or her pocket. But the knife had poor beginnings.
In the late nineteenth century, the Swiss army issued(发给) its soldiers a gun that required a special screwdriver(螺丝刀) to take it apart and clean it. At the same time, canned food was becoming common in the army. Swiss generals decided to issue each soldier a standard knife to serve both as a screwdriver and a can opener.
It was a lifesaver for Swiss knife makers, who were struggling to compete with cheaper German imports. In 1884, Carl Elsener, head of the Swiss knife manufacturer(maker) Victorinox, seized that opportunity with both hands, and designed a soldier's knife that the army loved. It was a simple knife with one big blade(刀片), a can opener, and a screwdriver.
A few years after the soldier's knife was issued, the "Schweizer Offizier Messer," or Swiss Officer's Knife, came on the market. Interestingly, the Officer's Knife was never given to those serving in the army. The Swiss army purchasers considered the new model with a corkscrew(瓶塞钻) for opening wine not "essential for survival," so officers had to buy this new model by themselves. But its special multi-functional design later launched(发行) the knife as a global brand. After the Second World War, a great number of American soldiers were stationed in Europe. And as they could buy the Swiss army knife at shops on army bases, they bought huge quantities of them. However, it seems that "Schweizer Offizier Messer" was too difficult for them to say, so they just called it the Swiss army knife, and that is the name it is now known by all over the world.

【小题4】Who gave the name "the Swiss army knife" to the knife discussed in the passage?

For most people, shopping is still a matter of wandering down the street or loading a cart in a shopping mall. Soon, that will change. Electronic commerce (trade) is growing fast and will soon bring people more choices. There will, however, be a cost: protecting the consumer from being cheated will be harder. Many governments therefore want to apply street regulations to the electronic world. But politicians would be wiser to see cyberspace as a basis for a new era of corporate self-regulation.
Consumers in rich countries have grown used to the idea that the government takes responsibility for everything from the stability of the banks to the safety of the drugs or their rights to refund when goods are faulty. But governments cannot enforce national laws on businesses whose only presence is on the screen. Even in a country where a clear right to compensation exists, the on-line customer in Tokyo, say, can hardly go to New York to get a refund (退款) for a clothes purchase.
One answer is for government to cooperate more: to recognize each other’s rules. But that requires years of work and volumes of detailed rules. And plenty of countries have rules too fanciful for sober countries to accept. There is, however, another choice. Let the electronic businesses do the regulation themselves. They do, after all, have a self-interest in doing so.
In electronic commerce, a reputation for honest dealing will be a valuable competitive asset. Governments, too, may compete to be trusted. For instance, customers ordering medicines on- line may prefer to buy from the United States because they trust the rigorous screening of the Food and Drug Administration; or they may decide that the FDA’s rules are too strict, and buy from Switzerland instead.
Customers will still need to use their judgment, but precisely because the technology is new, electronic shoppers are likely for a while to be a lot more cautious than customers of the normal sort. And the new technology will also make it easier for them to complain when a company lets them down. In this way, at least, the advent(出现) of cyberspace may argue for fewer consumer protection laws, not more.
【小题1】In case an electronic shopper bought faulty goods from a foreign country, what could he do?

A.Refuse to pay for the purchase. B.Go to the seller and ask for a refund.
C.Appeal to consumer protection law. D.Complain about it on the Internet.
【小题2】In the author’s view, businesses would place a high emphasis on honest dealing because in the electronic world _______.
A.international cooperation would be much more frequent
B.consumers could easily seek government protection
C.a good reputation is a great advantage in competition
D.it would be easy for consumers to complain
【小题3】We can infer from the passage that in licensing new drugs the FDA in the United States is______.
A.very quick B.very cautious C.very slow D.rather careless
【小题4】According to the author, what will be the best policy for electronic commerce?
A.Self-regulation by the business. B.Strict Consumer protection laws.
C.Close international cooperation. D.Government protection.

1. Mean old ladies
There is always a reason why an old lady gives you a serious look – you are being too loud, dressed improperly or not crossing the street in the right place. Sometimes it can be lovely, but if you are already having a bad day, a mean old lady can drive you mad.
What to do about it:
I’ve come to realize that when people start conflicts, it is actually an expression of their inner state expressed in an outside way. You, your personality, your looks or your actions have nothing to do with it. It is not personal, so why take it personally?
2. That person, who cuts in front of everybody in line
This is something that gets me angry. Even if I am not in a hurry, I still feel bad for the other people in line who are being treated unjustly. Are you more patient than I am or do you feel annoying too?
What to do about it:
If we have negative thoughts then we are wasting our energy on negativity. Situations like this could be a great opportunity to learn to control our first negative responses and practice understanding. After all, the person may just have a quick question or maybe there is an emergency.
Friends that tell you “I told you so”
It is one thing to admit that you made a mistake and another to hear it from a friend. Friends should be there to support you and cheer you up when you are feeling down, not make themselves feel better at your expense, right?
What to do about it:
It helps to remember that when people say “I told you so”, they may mean, “Please listen to my advice to avoid future mistakes.” If this is not the help you need – voice it out, without getting defensive.
【小题1】According to the author, what can you do when meeting with a mean old lady?
