Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean.
In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3,000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10, 330 feet. In 1960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35,800 feet.
All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below the surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week.
Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then in 1964 he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface.
Many countries are now studying undersea living things. The former Soviet Union had an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United States has a laboratory 50 feet down on the ocean floor off the Virgin Islands. In 1970 five men lived there for two weeks. Then a team of five women scientists stayed in the laboratory. Next came other teams of men. All were there to explore the ocean depths and to make plans for the use of its resources. Scientists hope to find enough mineral, vegetable, and animal wealth there to provide food for the entire world.
64. In order to _____, scientists are exploring below the surface of the ocean.

D. both A and B
65. Who set up the first undersea station?
A. A Frenchman                         B. An American
C. A Russian                              D. The passage made no mention
66. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Nobody can stay below the surface of the ocean.
B. The early divers could not stay below the surface of the ocean for very long.
C. The purpose of setting up the undersea laboratories is to make plans for the use of the resources in the ocean.
D. Up to now only five women scientists have stayed in the undersea laboratory.

For the people living in the Nile Basin, the river is their life:. This 6,825 km waterway, whose watershed(流域) covers three million square kilometers, flows through mountains ,woodlands, lakes and deserts. Its potential for fishing, tourism and shipping is great—but so are its challenges.
Water shortage , already serious in Egypt and Sudan , will soon influence several other countries in the watershed as well. Today, about 160 million people depend on the Nile River for their living. Within the next 25 yeas ,the district's population is expected to double, adding to the demand brought about by growth in industry and agriculture. The frequent drought(干旱)adds to the urgency.
Water quality is also a problem. Precious soil is washed out to sea. Wastes from industry and agriculture create pollution. Higher concentrations of salt influence irrigated soils. Water-borne diseases continue unchecked. In areas where it's hot and damp, water hyacinths choke off lakes, dams and other sections of the river, making it difficult for fishing and other businesses to move forward.
Native people along the narrow area of farmland have watched the sand move closer day by day. They’ve seen the river change course, and their only source(来源) of water thickened with mud. They’re very poor and have few choices.
But a new program, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI),is offering very practical assistance. The program is more than just a water-management project. It’s a plan for the social and economic development of a vast district: it concentrates on the needs of the poorest of the poor and the environment that supports them.
These are whole ecosystem problems, calling for united solutions(解决办法). Half the Nile Basin's countries are among the world's poorest nations;yet, somehow, they must find the  resources, skills and political will to overcome these challenges.
68. What are the great challenges the Nile Basin faces?
A. The development of .shipping industry.
B. Overfishing of native people.
C. Water shortage and water quality.
D. Increasing population and tourism.

A. animals                           B. plants                     C. rocks                                D. salts
70. The program NBI is mainly aimed at           .
A. preventing water pollution                             B. changing the river course
C. improving living condition of the poor
D. preventing land from becoming desert
71. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. People's Life in Egypt and Sudan
B. Frequent Drought in Egypt and Sudan
C. The Poorest Countries in the Nile Basin
D. The Ecosystem Problems in the Nile Basin

Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are a major cause of climate change, and now a new study has confirmed that atmospheric CO2 is also affecting the ocean chemistry and potentially harming sea life.
Montana State University scientist Robert Dore has been researching the water in the Pacific Ocean for almost two decades.
"We've been going to the same spot in the Pacific Ocean, and we try and characterize long-term change in the open ocean environment. And one of the key things that we measure is CO2 levels. And we've been able to record this increasing quantity of atmospheric CO2 into the ocean."
Scientists expected that as atmospheric CO2 increased, more and more of the carbon dioxide would be absorbed into the ocean, affecting the chemical balance of the sea water, with a potentially harmful impact on shellfish and coral in particular.
"As carbon dioxide dissolves(溶解) in the water, or seawater in this case, it forms a weak acid, carbonic acid," Dore explains. "And therefore, as the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere goes up and that exchanges with the surface seawater, it drives the pH down, and makes it more acidic."
The seawater Dore and his colleagues have analyzed confirms what the theory predicts.
The effect was particular striking at about 250 meters down, and again at 500 meters. Dore and his colleagues came up with two possible explanations. It could be that surface water picked up CO2 and then moved to those depths. Or there could be a biological explanation.
"It's important to realize that the oceans are really becoming acidic. And it can have negative impacts on a whole variety of sea life from fish to coral. It's potentially catastrophic."
53.What can be the best title of the passage?

a.Sea life is endangered.
b.CO2 goes into the surface water.
c.The ocean chemistry is affected.
d.CO2decreases the PH and makes the seawater more acidic.

e.CO2 levels in the atmosphere go up.

55.Scientist Robert Dore came to the conclusion based on__________.
A.his research and analysis
B.a major cause of climate change
C.some former theory
D.the expectation of other scientists
56.What does the passage want to tell us most?
A.It takes time to make a scientific study.
B.Atmospheric CO2 is doing harm to sea life.
C.Robert Dore is a committed and serious scientist.
D.Measures should be taken to prevent the potential catastrophe.

Sometimes we cry because we are sad and sometimes because we are extremely happy. An irritant(刺激物),such as onion(洋葱) smell or grains of sand in the eye,can also make cry.In this case tears perform an obvious role in getting rid of substances that might harm the surface of the eye.
Dr.William Frey of the Dry Eye and Tear Research Center at St.Paul in Minnesota,USA,believes that tears from emotional causes may perform a similar role.He thinks that crying could get rid of emotional stress by washing away a chemical in the blood caused by strong emotions. To prove his theory, he hopes first to identify this chemical and then see if it is found in tears of sadness or happiness.
So far, Dr.Frey has failed to find out the difference between emotional tears and tears caused by an irritant in the eye. This may be because these substances themselves cause a degree of stress and emotion. What he has identified in all tears is a variety of biochemicals(生化物)which are one of the causes of stress.A more detailed study may help us understand why sufferers from stress-related disorders cry less often than healthy people.Dr.Frey is also very interested to see if there are any physiological(生理学的)explanations for why women,in general, cry five times more often than men,on average.
64. The main purpose of Dr.Frey’s study of tears is to
A. show that there are two types of tears, caused by irritants and by emotions
B. find out the cause of stress-related problems and emotional disorders
C. explain why women cry more often than men
D. prove that tears can remove a chemical in the blood caused by strong emotions
65. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Tears fail to help get rid of emotional stress.
B. Irritants in the eye result in tears without causing stress and emotion.
C. Healthy people cry more often than those with stress-related problems.
D. The biochemical identified by Dr.Frey has nothing to do with stress.
66. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. crying does us more harm than good
B. inner feelings don’t affect our bodies
C. sorrow may cause some chemicals in our blood
D. emotional tears are different from tears caused by irritants in the eye
67. Dr.Frey believes that tears from emotional causes may play a role in getting rid of ______.
A. emotional stress by washing away a chemical in the blood
B. onion smell or grains of sand
C. sufferings from irritants
D. substances that might not harm the surface of the eye

The earth is getting warmer. The planet is suffering. But what can you do about it? Reduce the amount of waste you generate. Use cleaner energy sources and go greener today, starting with these steps:
1. Get a reusable water bottle
Americans buy about 25 billion single-serving plastic water bottles each year. That's an average of 83 bottles per person per year. Plastic bottles take plenty of resources to produce, including fuel for transportation and petroleum to make the plastic. Even recycling bottles uses energy.
2. Eat less meat
You don't need to become a vegetarian to help save the planet. Eating meat just one day less a week can reduce your negative impact on the environment. More water, energy and land are required to produce meat than to produce grain.
3. Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs
Most households use standard incandescent (白炽的) bulbs. But compact fluorescent (荧光的) light bulbs, or CFLs, use 66 percent less energy than standard bulbs, produce just as much light, last up to 10 times longer and don't need to be replaced as often. If every household in the United States replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a CFL bulb, it would equal removing one million cars from the road.
4. Buy organic and local food
Did you know that only 1 percent of pesticides (杀虫剂) applied to crops reach the pests they target? The rest enter the environment. Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides. Organic farming can use 50 percent less energy than traditional farming methods. Buying local food saves on the fuel used to transport food grown elsewhere, thousands of miles across the country or around the world.
5. Recycle your electronics
Everyone knows the importance of recycling glass and plastic, but what about cell phones, computers, CDs and batteries? Electronics are responsible for about 40 percent of toxic (有毒的) heavy metals such as lead and mercury. Check with your city's recycling facilities to see if they take electronics.
72. The readers of this passage are called on to ______.
A. help reduce global warming               B. use water in a wise way               C. donate money for charity                      D. keep a balanced diet
73. What is an advantage of CFLs according to the passage?
A. They use more energy but produce more light.                                   B. They can last longer so don't need to be replaced often.                                        C. They cost less than standard incandescent bulbs.                                         D. They are as energy-efficient as incandescent bulbs.
74. Which of the following figures is correct according to the passage?
A. Every year an American buys 63 plastic water bottles on average.                   B. Eating meat one day less a week helps cut environment costs.                                   C. 99 of the pesticides used on crops is effective in practice.                                         D. Electronics account for half of poisonous heavy metals on the earth.
75. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. Why is the earth getting warmer?           B. What can we do about pollution?              C. How can you lead a greener life?          D. Who is to blame for global warming?

Can trees talk? Yes --- but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree  (柳树) attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them tasteless so that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. The even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapor--- a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make themselves taste also terrible.
Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So shy shouldn’t trees have ways of sending messages?
71.When attacked, a willow tree will protect itself by _______.
A. changing its leaves’ chemistry         B. changing its leaves’ color
C. talking to caterpillars                      D. sending a special vapor
72. From the passage we know that caterpillars _______.
A. like willow trees                            B. enjoy eating fallen leaves
C. feed on willow tree leaves     D. could communicate with willow trees
73.Caterpillars will stop eating willow tree leaves which _______
A . have a chemical change and become tasteless   B. have a pleasant taste
C. are being attacked                                      D. are communicating
74.According to the passage, how do willow trees communicate with each other?
A. They talk in words.                               B. They send a special vapor.
C. They wave their leaves.                          D. They make special sounds.
75.According to the passage, bees communicate with each other by _______.
