    High school dropouts（辍学者）earn an average of $ 9,000 less per year than graduates. Now a new study dispels a common belief why they quit. It’s much more basic than flunking out（不及格）.

        Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t cut it. They are lazy，and perhaps not too bright．So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who quit school about why they left.

        “The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have graduated from high school.” John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic（美籍西班牙的）student will receive a diploma（证书），and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So， if failing grades don’t explain why these kids quit, what does? Again，John Bridgeland："The most dependable finding was that they were bored.” “They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in the classroom to their own lives, or to their career aspirations.”

        The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US，only one state，New Mexico，has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18, no exceptions, another researcher，says raising the compulsory（义务的）attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school．

     　“As these dropouts look back，they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything that sort of gives these people an extra push to stick it out and it through to the end, is probably helpful measure.”

        New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18. But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point－the need for reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant, and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.

    Recently we told you about a finding that more years of school could help students get higherscores on intelligence tests．That was the finding of a study of teenage males in Norway．Now，other research shows that physical activity may help students do better in their classes .

    The research comes as educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like physical education．They are using the time instead for academic subjects like maths and reading．The studies appeared between 2007 and 2013．They included more than 55，000 children，aged 6 to 18．

    Amika Singh：“Based on the results of our study，we can conclude that being physically active is beneficial for academic performance. There are，first，Physiological explanations，like more blood flow, and so more oxygen to the brain．Being physically active means there are more hormones(荷尔蒙)produced like endorphins(内啡肽)．And endorphins make your stress level lower and? your mood improved, which means you also perform better.”

    Also，students involved in organized sports learn rules and how to follow them．This could improve their classroom behavior and help them keep their mind on their work．

    The study leaves some questions unanswered，however．Ms．Stash says it is not possible to say whether the amount or kind of activity affected the level of academic improvement．This is because of differences among the studies .

    Also．they were mostly observational studies．An observational study is where researchers do not do controlled comparisons．They only describe what they observe．So they might observe a link that students who are more active often have better grades．But that does not necessarily mean being active was the cause of those higher grades．

    The researchers said they found only two high - quality studies．They called for more high-

    quality studies to confirm their findings．They also pointed out that “outcomes for other parts of the world may be quite different. ”

    Still，the general finding was that physically active kids are more likely to do better in school．Ms．Singh says schools should consider that finding before they cut physical education programs．Her paper on “Physical Activity and Performance at School”is published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine．

        Something that has always interested me about Abraham Lincoln is，not surprisingly，his

    sense of humor. As far as I can tell，he's the first American President to have one．

        That's because the term“sense of humor，， really wasn't in common usage until the

    eighteen-sixties and seventies．In the eighteen-forties and fifties，it was called“the sense of the

    ridiculous," and didn't have the positive connotations（隐含意义）that“sense of humor" has

    oday. Back then，what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule（讥笑）．Funniness and cruelty

    went hand in hand．Of course，they still do a lot of arm-in-arm walking in our day as well．

        Lincoln’s humor was very different because，for one thing，it was actually "humor＂as what

    anymore; but in the nineteenth century people did．Wit was unpleasant and offensive while

    humor was pleasant and sympathetic．It’s。the difference we note now when we distinguish

    between "laughing with”and“laughing at．”Lincoln was much more about "laughing with”than

    "laughing at．”And when“laughing at，”it was often himself he was teasing.

        In the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates，when Douglas accused Lincoln of being two-faced，

    Lincoln replied，referencing his plain looking，“Honestly，if I were two-faced，would I be

    showing you this one？”And，in a way，Lincoln's face itself tells us much about his sense of

    humor．

        You can comb through thousands of photographs of politicians，soldiers，and the like from

    Lincoln's time and not find a single smile．

        True, the long exposures（曝光）required for photographs of that time made smiling

    difficult．Yet Lincoln alone，as far as I can tell，overcame that difficulty.

        Interestingly ．while having a sense of humor，or at least the appearance of one provided by

    comedy writers ．has become a necessary characteristic for an American President in our time，in

    the。ineteenth century，too much humor was considered。problem. -And that was the case for
