1.My father was a self-taught mandolin (曼陀林) player. He was one of the best string(31)B players in our town.He could not read music, but (32)C he heard a tune a few times,he could play it.
Dad loved to play the mandolin for his family.Nobody played the mandolin like my father. He could (33)D your soul with the tones that came out of that old mandolin. You could see his (34)B in his ability to play so well for his family.
In 1957,he worked for Todd Steel in Point of Rocks. While working there,he was involved in an accident. He got the third index finger of his left hand mashed between two pieces of steel.Dad (35)D having the tip of the finger amputated.
After the accident,Dad was reluctant to play the mandolin. When I came home on (36)Band asked him to play,he would make excuses for why he couldn't play.Eventually,we would make him give in,and he would say"Since the accident to this finger I can't play as well".For the family it didn't make any (37)D that Dad couldn't play as well.We were just (38)C that he would play. When he played the old mandolin,it would carry us (39)B to a cheerful, happy time in our lives.
In August of 1993my father was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.About a week before his death,we (40)C Dad if he would play the mandolin for us.He made excuses but said"OK".He knew it would probably be the(41)D time he would play for us.He (42)B up the old mandolin and played a few notes. When I looked around, there was not a (43)A eye in the family.
We saw before us a quiet humble man (44)D an inner strength that comes from knowing God,and that lives with him in his life.Dad would never play the mandolin for us again. We felt at the time that he wouldn't have enough strength to play, and that makes the (45)A of that day even stronger.Dad was doing something he had done all his life, giving.
