    19．Hearing aids today are so small that sometimes you cannot even see them．They can even be part of the frames of a person's glasses．These hearing aids work very much like transistor radios，powered by very tiny batteries．The hearing aid is a wonderful invention that can help a deaf person to hear again．Soon it will be as common for people to wear hearing aids to help them to hear as it is for people to wear glasses to help them to see．
    At one time，there was a shame attached to wearing a hearing aid．But this was once true of glasses，too． Today three out of every ten school children wear glasses，and many more people wear glasses as they grow older．The hearing aids is becoming equally well-accepted，for modern hearing aids are wonderfully efficient，available in many styles，and can be fitted to help almost all types of hearing losses．
    Hearing aids come in two basic types：air conduction，worn directly in the ear，transmitting （传送）vibrations （振动） through the eardrum （耳鼓），and bone conduction，which transmit vibrations through the mastoid（乳头状的） bone behind the ear directly to the nerve endings of inner ear．The discovery of a new electronic miracle，known as the transistor，has made it possible to produce hearing aids so small and
    so light that they can be worn directly in the outer ear or in the frames of eyeglasses．
