　　L'HAY-LES-ROSES, France：Three teenage girls admitted starting a fire in a suburban Paris housing project over the weekend that killed 17 people, including three children, police said yesterday．A fourth girl was held yesterday morning．

　　The fire in a 19-storey building south of Paris was the third fatal blaze in the Paris area in nine days．The death toll rose to 16 after a man died late Sunday in a hospital, where seven others were being treated for serious injuries, police said．

　　Three teenagers taken in for questioning on Sunday admitted having started the fire for fun, police said．Two of the suspects were 18-year-old, the other was 16, police said．Further details were not available．

　　Witnesses claimed to have seen a group of youths who lived in the building start the fire, said Patrick Seve, mayor of the town of L'HAY-LES-ROSES, near Orly airport, where the building was located．

　　The fire is believed to have broken out in the lobby(门厅)of the building before raging up a stairwell at least three floors．Some residents jumped from windows as the fire spread through the building's entrance．

　　Authorities were investigating possible criminals in an August 26 fire that killed 14 African children and three adults in a Paris apartment building．Three days later, another fire killed seven in a building．

　　Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy suggested on French television on Sunday night that copycats(盲目模仿者)were at work．“Each time there is a new story, sometimes that gives ideas to people who then turn into criminals,”Sarkozy said, promising severe punishment for anyone found guilty of arson(纵火)．

　　When Laura reached school-going age the discussions about moving became more urgent (紧迫的). Her father did not want the children to go to school with the village children and for once her mother agreed with him. Not because, as he said, they ought to have a better education than they could get at Lark Rise; but because she feared they would tear their clothes and catch cold and get dirty heads going a mile and a half to and from the school in the village. 　　So their father brought home two copies of Mavor's First Reader and taught them the alphabet; but just as Laura was beginning on words of one syllable (音节), He was sent away to work on a distant job, only corning home at weekends. Laura, left at the c-a-t s-I-t-s on the m-a-t's stage, then had to carry her book round after her mother as she went about her housework, asking,“Please, Mother, what does h-o-u-s-a spell?”or“W-a-l-k, Mother, what is that?”

　　The Western has been the favorite type for American adventure stories since the nineteenth century．While the American West was being settled，newspapers and “dime novels” could depend on stories of the frontier settlements and tell tales about living in the untamed wilderness to sell．The public back East was eager to read about the West，even if the stories were more fiction than fact．

　　In 1902, Owen Wister published his novel The Virginian, which was one of the first novels to treat the Western as a serious literary form; the novel still sold well and had inspired several movies and a television series．In 1905, Bertha H．Bower and Zane Grey published their first novels, and the popular Western novels had continued to flourish from that day on, with current novels by Luke Short, Max Brand, and Louis L’ Amour carrying on the tradition．

　　The first Western movie appeared even earlier than these serious Western novels．Before the turn of the century, an associate of Edison’s had filmed Cripple Creek Barroom Scene, a few seconds of film showing the inside of a saloon, to help publicize the invention of the movie camera．In 1903 the Edison’ company filmed the first “full length” Western－The Great Train Robbery．The film lasts less than fifteen minutes, but a story is told its entirety．In the movie, bandits(强盗)rob a train and its passengers, killing the engineer, and find themselves tracked down by a posse．Audiences loved the movie．Some theaters were actually opened for the single purpose of showing The Great Train Robbery? and only later realized that they could do equally well showing other movies．The film was so successful that other companies, and finally even the Edison company itself, began producing copies and other versions of The Great Train Robbery．Ironically, in an era when the West was still very real－Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma were all territories rather than states in 1903－The Great Train Robbery was filmed in New Jersey．
