CHICAGO, Illinois – Listen! Up in the sky! What’s that loud, constant and harsh buzzing sound? It’s a grass eater in a bad mood! It’ a blender full of gravel! No. It’s Supercicada!

A cicada is a large insect with a fat body and big clear wings. It is gentle and harmless — except for one thing. It can do considerable harm to silence with its very loud mating call.

Every 17 years, a certain type of cicada — actually not the biggest kind — comes out of the ground in young form, climbs up a tree, sheds its hard shell, and opens up a lovely set of wings. After living underground in larval form for all those years, it now has about one month to buzz around and find a mate.

The 17-year type of cicada is common only in the eastern half of the United States. This year’s appearance in May and June happened mostly in parts of the United States. Because of the huge noise factor, a number of planned events had to be put off — such as outdoor concerts.

The noise made by just one male cicada can reach 90 decibels. That’s as loud as a kitchen blender. So many cicadas appear in some places that they actually break tree branches with their weight. As many as 1.5 million cicadas can crowd onto just one acre of trees.

The appearance of the 17-year variety may not be appreciated by all nearby humans. But it is appreciated by many nearby birds, squirrels, dogs, and cats. Dogs especially love the things — not because of their sound but because of the taste.

David Hammond of Chicago runs a restaurant. They decided this year to give cicadas a try — not raw, but fried and eaten with some kind of dip.

The other day I was talking to a stranger on the bus; he told me that he had a good   36   in Chicago and he wondered if, by any chance, I   37   to know him . For a moment, I thought he might be   38   ,but I could tell from the expression on his face that he was not. He was   39  . I felt like saying that it was ridiculous (可笑的) to   40   that out of all the millions of people in Chicago I could possibly have ever bumped into his friend. He was silent for a few minutes, and then he   43   to tell me all about his friend.

His friend’s main   44   in life seemed to be tennis. He was an excellent tennis player , and he   45    had his own tennis court. For a moment, we stared at each other, but we did not say anything.

“Would your friend’s name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?” I asked finally. He   54   and said, “Yes. Would your brother’s name happen to be Dr Rey Hunter?” It was my   55   to laugh. “Yes,” I replied.

When I was in college twenty-five years ago, I spent four summers working as a maid in housekeeping at a grand hotel in downtown Chicago. I did not enter the world of housekeeping enthusiastically. I had been hoping to get a job as an office assistant. When that failed, I had no choice but to work as a maid.

It was tiring work, cleaning up to eighteen rooms a day. My poor attitude reflected my disdain(蔑视) for cleaning toilets, changing bed sheets, dusting, and vacuuming eight hours a day for the comfort of total strangers who rarely left a tip. My maid work was just so-so until the day I was assigned to the eighteenth floor.

That was Lorena’s regular floor. The only time another maid set foot on it was on Lorena’s day off. If you left a little rubbish on the floor, a small tissue under the bed, or a pillow uncleaned, Lorena would hunt you down when she returned. She’d ended her lecture to me with, “Take some pride in your work.”

She did. And so did Rosalie, Helen, Annette, Pearlie, Earline, and all the other career maids with more than one hundred years of experience among them. Their commitment to doing a good job and their belief that their work was a reflection of their character stuck with me throughout my professional career. I learned a lot from them those four summers.
