Many of the world's countries have reached or are approaching zero population growth (ZPG). Nearly all such lands are economically well developed. They include much of Europe (including Russia), the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. As the rate of natural increase (RNI) declines, two things happen. First, the population begins to decline if the loss is not balanced by immigration. Second, a country's population ages because there are fewer births.

Is achieving ZPG good or bad? What happens when a country's population begins to drop? Many people, after all, believe that population decline is a good thing. But is it good for everyone? Does everyone agree?

An aging population can create many problems. Senior citizens require more health care and medical attention. Rather than paying into retirement programs, they begin to draw from their pensions. In the US, the Social Security program, according to many experts, will be used up by 2018. It will pay out more money than it takes in. Additionally, a great number of jobs go begging in search of people willing or able to do them. Many of these jobs are entrylevel positions that pay low wages. With an aging population, who will fill them? At the other extreme, some positions require a large number of training and highly specialized skills. Who will fill these positions as retirees leave the workforce?

The answer to the problem of declining and aging population is simple: increased migration. Today many people, particularly those from less developed countries, are migrating in search of employment. Many are willing to take jobs that cannot (or will not) be filled by the_domestic_population. Others are well educated and highly skilled. Both groups contribute to a country's economy progress in many ways. Further, they add to the richness of a country's culture. Of greatest importance, perhaps, is the fact that they have become absolutely necessary to the economy of many lands. As you can see, for many countries and for most immigrants, migration is a winwin situation.

I often quarrel with my mother over if I can watch TV after school. She holds the view that high school students has to make full use of every minute to work hard at their lesson. It seems to her that once I am allowed to do that, I’ll be unable to control myself and forgot all about my study. I also thinks watching TV is bad for my eyes. But I really can’t accept her ideas. In my opinion, watching TV can make my mind to have a rest after a day’s hardly work. Beside, it is important for us to know what has happened home and abroad. Thus, we shouldn’t be forbidding to watch TV.

【题目】阅读理解。

As the November cold begins to take control

in the UK, Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes Night) is a chance to wrap up in winter clothes and warm up by the fire.

Celebrated on November 5, Guy Fawkes Night has been part of British history since 1605, when Fawkes was found trying to blow up parliament (议会) with barrels of gunpowder. Now, it is traditional for Britons to make a fake (假的) “Guy” every year from old clothes and burn it on the fire.

If you visit a small town in the southwest of the country, you might see men from the village run through the crowded streets with huge wooden barrels on their backs, then fill them with tar (焦油) and set them on fire. And in Lewes, a town in the southern English county of Sussex, different groups of bonfire societies parade (游行) the streets, each wearing their own unique outfits and carrying a giant mascot (吉祥物), which they burn at their own bonfire party at the end of the evening.

Bonfire Night is also a time for “chili con carne”, a dish made from slowcooked beef mince, tomatoes, kidney beans, onions, and spices. It is often served on top of a hot jacket potato with butter and cheese. It's not the most elegant dish in the world but it's sure to warm people up while they brave the cold for the festivities.

But for many Britons, the night is not complete without “bonfire treacle toffee (太妃糖)”, which is also known as “plot toffee”, named after Guy Fawkes' plot to blow up parliament. The toffee is rock hard and is often broken with a hammer and handed out to guests.

Whether it's the sound of fireworks making Britain sound like a war zone, the hearty winter food, or the excuse to light a huge fire, Bonfire Night has something for everyone. Just watch out for those rockets!

A.celebrations B.fireworks

【题目】阅读理解。

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.

Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and nonjoggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as nonjoggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.

Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”

The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and longdistance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study,“You don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn't actually do too much.”

【1】The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “________”.

A.hard B.regular

C.practical D.flexible

【2】The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to ________.

A.suggest giving up jogging

B.show risks of doing sports

C.provide supportive evidence

D.introduce the research process

【3】According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful?

A.It may injure the heart and arteries.

B.It can make the body tired out.

C.It will bring much pressure.

D.It consumes too much energy.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A.Jogging is the best exercise.

B.More exercise means a healthier life.

C.Marathons runners are least likely to die.

D.Proper exercise contributes to good health.
