Is it true that cats have nine lives? One 4-year-old American cat named Sugar definitely seems to
have more than one. Sugar fell from the 19th floor of her owner's home in Boston last month and was
only hurt a little on her chest.
"This story isn't much of a surprise," said Jake Socha, a scientist at Virginia Tech University, US, in
an interview with the BBC. "There have been lots of records of these cats surviving."
Back in 1987, scientists studied 132 cats. All of them had been brought to a vet's clinic in New York
after falling from tall buildings. Around 90 percent of these cats were alive after their fall and only 37
percent had been seriously injured.
"Being able to survive falls is a critical thing for animals that live in trees, and cats are one of them,"
said Socha.
Cats have developed special body structures to survive accidental falls. Their legs are muscular. This
can protect their bones from breaking, Professor Andrew Biewener from Harvard University told the
BBC. Cats can also spread out their legs like a parachute to reduce their falling speed, he said.
The strange part, according to scientists, is that cats have a better chance of survival if they fall from
higher than seven stories. This is because cats have a good sense of which way is down. They can twist
their bodies as they fall to make sure they land on their feet. A higher fall means more time for the cat to
change its body position.
However, you should not throw your cat out of the window to see how this works. Most pet cats are
overweight nowadays. They are not fit enough to change their position in midair, warned Steve Dale, an
American cat behavior scientist.
"This cat (Sugar) was lucky," Dale said. In fact, most cats would suffer serious lung damage, a broken
leg or a broken jaw or teeth damage, he said.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Cats really do have nine lives.
B. Many cats can survive falls.
C. Cats are the softest animals in the world.
D. More than half of the cats that fall from high places end up badly injured.

2. What does the underlined word "critical" mean in the context?
A. Important.
B. Easy.
C. Challenging.
D. Serious.

3. Why can cats survive falls according to the article?
a. They have a hidden parachute in their bodies.
b. Their legs have developed in a way that protects their bones from breaking.
c. They can land on their feet.
d. They can twist their bodies to reduce the speed at which they are falling.
A. a, b
B. b, c
C. c, d
D. b, d

4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. A pet cat that falls out of a tall building is not really at risk.
B. Sugar was lucky that she was only injured in the leg.
C. Cats are confused as to which way is down when they are in midair.
D. A cat that falls from the fourth story of a building is more likely to die than one
that falls from the 10th story.

IS THERE LIFE ON EARTH

There was great excitement on the planet of Venus this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.

The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan(named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof.Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20000 light years ago).

Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information as to the feasibility(可行性)of a manned flying saucer landing on Earth.A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.

“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week’s satellite landing, ”Pro.Zog said, “that there is no life on the Earth.”

“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.

“For one thing, Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is composed of solid concrete(混凝土)and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”

“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”

“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means a much heavier flying saucer than we originally planned.”

“Are there any other hazards that you discovered in your studies?”

“Take a look at this photo. You see this ?dark black cloud? hovering over the surface of Earth? We call this the Consolidated Edison Belt.We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”

“If what you say is true, won’t this set back the flying saucer program several years?”

“Yes, but we shall proceed as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds.”

“Prof.Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?”

“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.”

Is early childhood education really necessary?Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning
through playing to develop the child's physical, sensory, communicational and social development.Early
childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally
trained before they are old enough for kindergarten.
There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education.Studies have shown
that orphaned children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed
causing failure in school, and even in life.Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head
Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are
less likely to receive public help or go to prison.
There are also negative parts to putting a child in formal education programs too early.Time Magazine online explains that "the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with firstgrade work." I have
personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become
frustrated and bored with school before they finished high school.Yet parents have been sure that the
earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is, so they push to start children earlier.
Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary
years, studies also show that this head start is really a "false start", as the gains are lost in middle and high
school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life's success than early education.Head Start
programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school
children.Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap.

1. The purpose of the government valuing the early childhood education is ________.

A. to develop the children's communication
B. to give orphaned children good care and education
C. to get the children prepared for the kindergarten
D. to train the children formally and regularly

2. According to the studies, which of the following is TRUE?

A. Children with good early education may have a rich life.
B. The orphaned children are usually unhappy in their life.
C. Children without early education can do well at school.
D. Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.

3. "the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with firstgrade work." suggests that ______.

A. the early childhood education is helpless to the child's grade
B. it is good for the young children to receive early education
C. the early education can help the children follow the grade
D. the younger the children are, the cleverer they will be

4. The author's attitude toward the early childhood education is ________.

A. puzzling
B. negative
C. indifferent
D. proving

5. The main idea of the last passage is that ________.

A. the early childhood education is very necessary
B. Head Start programs have helped the children a lot
C. environment is the most important to life's success
D. better ways should be found to help the poor children

Is there a nationwide shortage of nurses? It's hard to say. However, some characteristic symptoms
often indicate that there is indeed a shortage.
One symptom is the vacancy rate, or the percentage of budgeted positions that are unfilled. New
England's hospitals currently report that an average of 7 to 12 percent of their registered nurse positions
are vacant, the highest level since the last shortage in the late 1980s. Vermont has a relatively low
vacancy rate, at 7.8 percent. But its vacancies were at 1.2 percent just five years ago.
Another symptom is the increased use of stopgap measures to fill empty positions. For instance, many
nurses report an upswing in how frequently they are asked to stay past their shifts. According to Murphy, working in the St. Elizabeth's Hospital, "The shortage has definitely created a lot of opportunities of
overtime for our nurses, whether they want them or not." Similarly, a national survey of registered nurses
shows that in an average week, nurses in the U.S. work 2.4 more hours than they are scheduled to.
Much of this extra time is voluntary, as nurses earn overtime pay when they stay to fill in blanks in the
schedule.
When they can't fill open positions by more traditional means, health care providers hire temporary
staff to tide them over. Travelling workers are the largest part of the temporary health care workforce,
hired for thirteen-week reduction at health care facilities facing short-term lack of workers. Temporary
workers, mainly nurses, cost hospitals $ 7.2 billion in 2000.
"Any successful solution to the shortage depends on convincing more people to become nurses, and
that is not an easy goal to reach. To achieve it," says Buerhaus, "society needs to place more value on
nursing. Legislation (法规) can't do that - it should come from people." And if this continues, we might
have to learn to care for ourselves in the hospital.
1.The temporary staff hired by a hospital _______.
A. cost a large part of the hospital's budget
B. meet the need for nurses in the hospital for a short time
C. should work on a weekly basis and on a scheduled timetable
D. ought to work passively for thirty continuous weeks
2. According to Buerhaus, what is a successful solution to the nurse shortage?
A. To convince people of the benefits of being a nurse.
B. To ask the government for help to work out specific legislation.
C. To publicize the past achievements of nurses.
D. To make people aware of the importance of being a nurse.
3. What's the probable meaning of the underlined word "upswing" in Paragraph 3?
A. Symptom
B. Decrease
C. Increase
D. Figure
4. What's the author's attitude towards nurse shortage?
A. Worried
B. Indifferent
C. Doubtful
D. Optimistic
