Bexley Middle School eighth-graders won the grand prize at the 2009 National Engineers Week Future City Competition(TM) on Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C.They competed with 37 other schools across the country.

The students qualified for the national competition by winning a regional competition on Jan. 17 in Columbus. By winning the national event, the students earned an all-expenses paid trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., according to a Bexley school district news release.

Future City aims to arouse interest in science, technology, engineering and math among young people. Bexley team members were Tom Krajnak, Abby Sharp, Wyatt Peery, Elizabeth Maher, Aaron Hutchinson and Truman Haycock. They work in teams under the guidance of a teacher, Margaret Englehardt, and a volunteer engineer, Mark Sherman, design and build a city of tomorrow. Mayor John Brennan presented the students during a recent Bexley City Council meeting.

Each team in the Future City competition plans its city using Sim City software and creates a model to show a physical representation of one section of the city. Team members must write both an essay about the yearly theme and an abstract about their city. They also must make a presentation to judges.

Focusing on eco-responsibility, the Bexley team built “Novo-Mondum,” an Icelandic city in the year 2171.Krajnak said the team’s project included a new water system for each resident unit and a 500-word essay on using bacteria to purify water. “We used our essay and abstract to build a model,” he said. “It was hard to organize which building would go where, what each building does and how to make it look good.”

Englehardt said her students did a good job answering impromptu(即席) questions during the regional competition. “They can think on their feet,” she said. Principal Harley Williams said the school is very proud of the students’ performance.

Many kids turn up their noses at the though of eating fish because, well, it can smell “fishy”. While it is usually a healthy source of protein in the diet, there may be several reasons to avoid biting into a forkful of fish. Before you break out the tartar sauce, learn some facts about fish to keep yourself and the environment healthy.

Some fish may contain harmful chemicals, which can be the result of both natural causes and water pollution. Mercury is a toxic chemical, which occurs naturally in oceans and the Earth's crust, but also comes from man-made sources, such as pesticides, burning garbage, and the releasing of fossil fuels.

Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs),a group of chemicals, can also be found in some fish. These man-made chemicals were used in many industries until 1977, when they were banned. PCBs were released or leak into the air and water and have been transported around the globe.

How do mercury and PCBs end up in fish and the food supply? When they are released into the air, they attach themselves to particles. These particles settle on the ground and in the water and are eventually eaten by microscopic organisms. Small fish eat the micro-organisms, and large fish eat the small fish and on up the food chain.

Because they can negatively affect your health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises that kids younger than 16 years old avoid fish that contain high levels of mercury and PCBs. These include shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish.

There are also many types of fish that are good for you, but because of over fishing some are in danger of being wiped not. Some are being fished in the wild so much that they cannot reproduce enough to survive. Others are being farmed in ways that are not environmentally friendly. These fish include red snapper, Atlantic salmon, blue fin tuna, and king crab.

Despite these problems, there are several fish that are both healthy and sustainable, such as Alaskan salmon, American catfish, Pacific cod, and several farm-raised fish and shellfish.

1.How do mercury and PCBs come to our food supply?

       A.Mercury and PCBswaterfishparticlesfood supply

       C.Mercury and PCBs particlesfishorganismsfood supply

D.Mercury and PCBs organismsground and waterfishfood supply

       A.fish                                                    B.particles

       C.microscopic organisms                        D.mercury and PCBs

3.According to the passage which group of fish can be safely eaten by young kids?

       A.Shellfish; tilefish; Alaskan salmon.

B.King crab; king mackerel; Pacific cod.

C.Pacific cod; Alaskan salmon; American catfish.

       D.Pacific cod; Atlantic salmon; swordfish.

4.The writer is most likely to agree that          .

A.we should be careful when deciding what kind of fish to eat

B.over fishing is the main cause of fish poisoning

C.most types of fish can be safely raised on fish farms

D.the government should ban children under 15 from eating fish

5.It can be inferred from the passage that            .

A.children like eating fish because it smells fishy

B.if you want to be more environmentally friendly, eat less fish

C.PCBs were not allowed to be used in food industry before 1977

D.adults might be less affected by high chemical levels in fish

Can you imagine a catfish bigger than a boy ? There are more than 1,000 kinds of catfish; 28 species are found in the United States’ lakes and rivers. This huge family has some mighty strange members. Let’s meet a few.

Walking catfish. Nature’s feisty little catfish, found in southern Florida, has an extra lung for breathing on dry land. When its swimming hole dries up, the walking catfish waddles on stiff forward fins in search of another lake or stream. If an enemy attacks, the fish flares (展开) its top and front fins and leaps at the attacker to scare it off.

Armored catfish. This catfish has heavy, bony plates protecting its body. The shell makes the fish difficult to bone. To cook it, throw the fish whole into a fire. When it is done, break it open for eating. Some armored catfish are found in Florida, but the 100-pounders live in South America.

Rounding out the family of strange catfish are talking catfish, which make growing sound when you pull them from the water; climbing catfish, which move quickly up shore brush in search of food; electric catfish, which can deliver a mild shock; and blind catfish, which settle in the inky blackness of underwater caves. Blind catfish find food through taste buds in their eight whiskers (须).

Most catfish have four whiskers on the upper jaw and four on the lower jaw. Sensory holes on these whiskers help the fish smell and taste food even in the muddiest of water. The United States does not have catfish anywhere near the size of those in South America. But in some large U.S. rivers, blue and flathead catties do top 100 pounds.

Most of the catfish you are likely to catch will be much smaller, about frying pan size. When you catch one, remember that the top fin and the forward fins have poison glands(腺) at their bases. They can give you painful wounds,(…)

1.The purpose of the passage is to         .

A.encourage readers to go fishing for catfish

B.inform readers of the world’s largest catfish

C.describe the unusual characteristics of catfish

D.explain different way s to catch a variety of catfish

A.it has heavy and bony plates

B.it’s hard to cook and eat

      C.it has too many bones

      D.it’s poisonous inside

3.Which is NOT mentioned about catfish in the passage?

A.Its eating habits.                                   B.Its living conditions.                         C.Its whiskers           D.Its size.

4.What may be continued in the last paragraph?

      A.The author’s love for catfish.

B.Where else to catch a catfish.

C.The origin of the name “catfish”.

D.The safest way to handle catfish.

China’s largest water diversion project may start supplying water to Shandong Province by 2007 and Beijing by 2010, an official confirmed Tuesday.

The worsening water shortage in the two areas, caused by decades of drought, may be alleviated with water from the mighty Yangtze River in the South which will be diverted into the parched North, he said. The water diversion project consists of three 1,300-kilometre canals that will carry water from the Yangtze along the eastern, middle and western parts of the country.

Zhang Jiyao, director of the State Council's office in charge of the South-to-North Project, told a national conference that ground will be broken in more places along two of the lines of the ambitious water diversion scheme, the largest of its kind in the world.

Before next year's flood season, construction of four new sections along the two lines will push the project further along the fast track. That would bring the total sections under construction to 13, since construction started in 2002 with an estimated investment of 124 billion yuan (about US$15 billion).

When finished, the two water diversion canals will be capable of transferring 13.4 billion cubic metres of water a year.
