17.One Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we'd have for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again.Last time I went down there was a couple of months ago and it was a dull cold day.Sunday couldn't have been more different-clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still-25°C.
Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we'd been off the base on our own without our field assistant,so it had a slightly different feeling-more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek,we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.
Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We'd been told that then they were nursing their chicks (刚孵出的幼雏) and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but that didn't seem to be the case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwiches and soon found ourselves surrounded by many curious observers.Without any attackers on land, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose (摆姿势) for photos.
Before heading back,we spent a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically (明显地) since our last visit. It was such a nice day.

17.One morning in 2007.Parthasarathy---we usually called him Partha.---came to meet me.He was disabled and was not an engineer but had majored in a computer course in college.I told Partha,"I'd like to employ people like you."In fact,it turned out to be the right decision to employ him.Partha had an amazing enthusiasm and his disability did not stop him from improving himself.I was not doing any charity by employing him because my company benefited more from Partha.I have realized that physically challenged people are more faithful than others but unfortunately we usually pay scant attention to them.
At that time our office was on the first floor and Partha had difnculty dealing with the stairs.Seeing him struggle.I decided to make the entire office disabled-friendly.Our ground floor is now intended for the disabled people,and we have special toilets for them.We have also built houses for them near the office so that they can avoid long travelling hours.
After meeting Partha,I decided to hire more disabled people.We waited six months to get another disabled person who then became our receptionist.
I don't regard employing disabled people as charity.I consider it my responsibility.The country has spent much money educating me and I feel it is time for me to do something as a reward.
It is great to work with them.Seeing them work,get married,settle in life and have children is a wonderful experience.
We have 550employees now,and 20percent of them are disabled.We go to Engineering Colleges looking for disabled people but onty to find one or two in each college.Parents don't send them out.The biggest challenge for the physically disabled is the attitude of their parents,but we hire them even if they are not engineers.

56.What kind of person was Partha?(No more than 10words)
Partha was disabled but didn't stop improving himself.
57.What does the underlined word"scant"in the 1st paragraph mean?(No more than 2words)
Little./Not enough.
58.Why is the ground floor intended for the disabled people?(No more than l2words)
Because the disabled have difficulty dealing with the stairs.
59.How many disabled workers are there in the writer's company now?(No more than 2words)
110
60.Do you agree to the writer's plan to employ more disabled people?And why?(No more than 30words)
Yes.Because it is our duty to reward the country and the disabled need chances to make full use of their skills to improve themselves..

1.It is pretty much a one-way street.While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial (商业的) world,there is very little traffic in the opposite direction.Pay has always been the biggest  deterrent,as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job.For some industrial scientists,however,the attractions of academia (学术界) outweigh any financial (金钱的) considerations.
Helen Lee took a 70%cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge.Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions.Some areas of inquiry have few prospects (前景) of a commercial return,and Lee's is one of them.
The influence of a salary cut is probably less serious for a scientist in the early stages of a career.Guy Grant,now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge,spent two years working for a medicine company before returning to university as a post doctoral researcher.He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual chances.
Higher up the ladder,where a pay cut is usually more important,the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the change to academia more attractive,according to Lee.Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not,such as how to build a multidisciplinary team,manage budgets and negotiate contracts.They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate,says Lee,perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development."Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career.So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential (潜力) in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow research project."

57.By"a one-way street"in Paragraph 1,the author meansC.
A.university researchers know little about the commercial world
B.few university professors are willing to do industrial research
C.few industrial scientists would leave to work in a university
D.there is little exchange between industry and academia
58.The underlined word"deterrent"most probably refers to"something thatD".
A.helps to move the traffic          B.attracts people's attention
C.brings someone a financial burden  D.keeps someone from taking action
59.What was Helen Lee's major consideration when she changed her job in the middle of her career?B
A.Less work hours.
B.More freedom to choose research fields.
C.Better prospects of a commercial return.
D.Her preference for the lifestyle on campus.
60.What can industrial scientists do when they come to teach in a university?D
A.Make its research more practical.
B.Develop its students'potential in research.
C.Help it to obtain financial support from industry.
D.Increase its graduates'competitiveness in the job market.
