Text 1 W: Dad,
would you lend me and Jenny thirty-six dollars? M: What for? W: We want
to get tickets for a rock concert. We’ll pay you back out of the baby-sitting money. M: All right. Here is the money.
Text 2 W: I got a part-time job at the supermarket, Dad. M: Great. Are you sure you can handle it? How many hours will you work? W: Yes. Three hours a day weekdays and all day Saturday. M: Well, I support you, but you should mind your study.
Text 3 W: What time is Susan coming? M: She won’t finish work until 4:30. It will take her 15 minutes to get here.
Text 4 M: Is Mr Stephen in, please? He’s expecting me. W: If he is in, his key will be here. Yes, sir. Room 202. He’s in his room. Would you like to ring up, sir?
Text 5 M: Show me your passport, please. W: Surely. Here you are. M: What’s the purpose of your trip? W: I’m here to visit friends. M: How long do you plan to remain here? W: Around a month. M: OK. That’s all. You may close you bags. Text 6 W: It’s Alice’s birthday next Tuesday. What shall we buy for her birthday? M: Does she like reading? We can buy her a book. W: Well, she has had lots of books already. Besides, her birthday present last year was also a book. M: How about a basketball? W: No, she doesn’t like basketball, but she likes football. M: Get her a football, then? W: Do you know how much a football costs? M: I have no idea, about 20 dollars, maybe. W: But I have only 6 dollars. How much do you have? M: I have eight. Why not go and ask John if he would like to join us?
Text 7 M: Hello,
Joe. W: Hello,
Bill. Have you ever been to the Ocean Park? M: No. But I’m going there tomorrow
morning. W: Well, you’ll like it. You’ll find a lot of kinds of fish there. What about the science museum? Have you been there yet? M: Yes, I went there yesterday afternoon. We can learn a lot about science there? W: Yes, all the visitors coming to our city will surely go to visit the museum. By the way, don’t forget to try some of the restaurants here. The food is great here. M: Yes, I certainly will. Text 8 W: Good
morning, Mr. Sharp. I’m very
sorry I’m late. M: You’re late every morning,
Miss Smith. You were late Tuesday, Yesterday... Don’t you have a watch? W: Yes. But it wasn’t my mistake. I stood in the rain for an hour this morning. I waited and waited for a bus, and then when one came, it was full. M: How about yesterday and the day before yesterday? W: Well, I came by taxi yesterday and... M: And you were still late! And Tuesday? W: Tuesday I went to see the doctor and I sat in his chair for about two hours. It was terrible! M: And tomorrow, Miss Smith? Text 9 M: Nancy,
what classes are you taking this term? W: I’m not sure yet. I want to
take two English courses, and maybe Spanish. And I’ll probably have to take
maths. M: Aren’t you going to take biology? That’s a required class you know. W: I already took it. No more science classes for me. Science just isn’t something I like. What are you taking? M: Only biology and English. W: How come you’re only taking two classes? M: I have to work this year. I don’t have enough money to study full-time. W: What kind of job are you going to get? M: That’s the problem. I’ve tried all the gas stations and the restaurants, but nothing. I’m going to try a few taxi companies tomorrow. I like to drive. W: Really? By the way, what do you think of Spain? I went
to Spain once and I really liked it. But the place I liked most was Switzerland.
I spent two weeks visiting my uncle there. M: I hope
that I can get to Europe someday. I’ve newer been out of the United States. Text 10 Dear Peter, Christmas is coming soon. The radio station is playing Christmas music, and the stores are very busy. People are doing their Christmas shopping. Many families have Christmas trees in their homes already. We are going to buy our tree a few days before Christmas. At this time of the year we make or buy presents for our families. I am going to buy a record for my elder brother. He listens to music all the time. I am going to make a toy for my little brother. Our family are usually together on Christmas Day. My elder brother lives in another town, but he always drives his car here. Last year, however, he didn’t come because it was snowing very hard and the roads were too dangerous. We all felt sad. I hope we are going to be together again this year. My elder brother is going to arrive before Christmas Eve. Then we are going to put up the tree in the living room, and we are going to put the presents under the tree. We won’t open them until Christmas morning. Do you celebrate Christmas in your country? Write soon.
