     　 “It’s over! Thank goodness!”

    School was over and I was tired. I sat at the front of the school bus. Janie, the driver, tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere by striking the match of talks. I try to listen politely, but usually I am too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.

    “My father’s ill,” she said to no one in particular. I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile. With a sudden change of interest, I asked, “What’s wrong with him?”

    With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, “Heart trouble.” Her eyes lowered as she continued, “I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.” I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.

    I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.

    Suddenly I realized Janie was more than a bus driver. That was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares for them too.

    I suddenly felt very selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant. I shouldn’t have been so selfish and self-centered.

    　　Known as the Dead Sea because nothing can live in it, the world's saltiest body of water has fallen from 390 metres to 417 metres below sea level in the last 50 years．The drop has sped up to a metre a year recently, making a third of its ancient 950 square km size lost．Modern economics are to blame－taking too much Jordan River water that feeds the Dead Sea to rain－starved farmland．

    　　Hotels and health spas(旅游胜地)built along the beach below desert cliffs, as well as sites holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims, are now a kilometre or more from the water's edge．Retired Swiss couple Jean and Esther Haensenberger have been spending their yearly“Kur”－a Central European tradition of taking medicinal baths to treat skin illness and stress－at Israel's flagship Dead Sea resort of Ein Gedi since the 1980s．At first, they could walk a few paces from the Ein Gedi Spa to the beach for a float in windless waters so floating that one can read a book while lying on one's back．Now visitors board a tractor－drawn trolley that takes them a kilometre to the water．

    　　“It's over twice the distance out today．It's sad that another rare preserve of nature is disappearing．”said Jean Haensenberger as he and his wife rode to the shore,“If the sea keeps going down, will people like us keep coming?”

    　　TALLMANSVILLE, W．Va．-Eleven miners who died in the Sago disaster could have walked out alive had they known that there was healthier air less than 2,000 feet away, the head of the mining company told NBC News in an interview aired on zMonday-exactly a week to the day that the men sat trapped in the mine awaiting rescuers who arrived too late for all but one survivor．

    　”They were headed into an unknown,” International Coal Group CEO Ben Haield said．“They had no way of knowing how big, how disastrous the explosion was．In hindsight, if they had known that the smoke was only extremely dense in an area of perhaps 1,000 or 1,500 feet, yes they could have moved to fresh air, yes they could have survived, but they had no way of knowing that．”

    　”It’s over two miles to the outside and they no doubt would have been concerned that they can’t walk through two miles of smoke,” he added．“If they had known that it was only 1,500 or 42,000 feet of smoke certainly they could have come on out and yes they could have been saved．”

    　　Haield called it a tragedy that was”unavoidable and horribly sad” because the miners, even though they had breathing devices, did exactly what they had been taught to do：hunker down(蹲下)and wait for rescuers．
