In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be. “There’re too many cars, and you can’t move around a lot.”
Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique (独特的) isthat we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what’s going to happen in front of you when leave home.”Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just answer current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give thefastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.
“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.

How to be more friendly and social
If you tend to be shy, it can feel uncomfortable to put yourself out there socially. 36 You can make the extra effort to be more friendly and open to others, while still keeping your own personality.
37 The key to connecting to other people is showing interest in them. When you’re truly interested in someone else’s thoughts, feelings, experiences, stories, and opinions, they’ ll like you for it. You’ll make far more friends by showing your interest rather than trying to get people interested in you.
Be genuine (真诚的). 38 If you’re just pretending to listen or care, others will pick up on it.
Rather than promoting greater connection, your efforts will likely have the opposite effect. No one likes to be manipulated (摆布). If you’re not actually interested in the other person, then stop trying to connect.
Pay attention. 39 By paying close attention to what they say and how they interact, you’ll quickly get to know them. 40 Don’t ignore the details, such as remembering someone’s preferences, the stories they’ve told you, and what’s going on in their life.
A. Faking (伪装) takes talent.
B. Focus on others, not yourself.
C. Little things go a long way.
D. Getting to know them is the key.
E. Make an effort to truly listen to the other person.
F. Showing interest in others can’t be faked.
G. But you don’t have to be naturally outgoing or the life of the party to make new friends.

Name: Sam Champion
Hot job: TV Weatherman
Where: WABC-TV, New York City
When you were a child, did you plan to forecast wind, rain, and snow on TV?
I want to be a foreign journalist. I took courses in weather science at Eastern Kentucky University, but I majored in broadcasting news.
How did you finally become a weatherman?
My first job in the early 80’s was at the local TV station in Paducah, Kentucky. I did everything from turning on the lights in the morning to writing and delivering morning news. I put together weather forecasts, and become interested in them.
Back then, how did you forecast weather?
Independent companies collected computer information that showed, for example, how a single weather system might split into snow or snow mixed with rain. The information was often opposite and the job of a weather man was to study the information and make the best educated guess about the storm.
Has weather forecasting changed much with new technology?
Advanced computers, satellites, and Doppler radar(sound waves used to track storms) have made forecasting more exact. But we still know very little about how weather is shaped. So far, we just have theories.
Any advice for children who’d like to become weather scientists?
To me, weather is the most exciting field in the world. There are still so many more questions about weather than answers. After all, if we can’t foresee floods or hurricanes, how safe a society are we? Weather forecasting is wide open for scientists who love to solve puzzling problems. The next generation of meteorologists will unlock many of Earth science, and study meteorology in college.
Thanks, Sam

There was once an 11-year-old boy who went fishing every time he went to an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before bass (巴斯鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching other fish with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and put it into the lake. Suddenly the boy felt something very big pulling on the lure. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully brought the fish beside the bank. Finally he lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the big fish. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm — two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.
“Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats could be seen in the moonlight. He looked again at his father.
Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he had caught the fish, the boy could tell from his father’s voice that the decision couldn’t be changed. He threw the huge bass into the black water.
The big fish disappeared. The boy thought that he would never again see such a big fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful architect in New York City. He often takes his own son and daughters to fish at the same place.
And he was right. He has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. But he does see that same fish ... again and again ... every time he has an ethical (道德的) decision to make. For, as his father had taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and wrong. It is only the practice of ethics that is difficult.
1.How did the father feel when he saw his son skillfully pulling a big fish out of the water?
A. Proud. B. Nervous.
C. Curious. D. Shocked.
2.From the text we know that ______.
A. the father didn’t love his son
B. the father always disagreed with his son
C. the father disliked the huge fish
D. the father was firm and stubborn
3.The successful architect went fishing with his children at the same place because ______.
A. they might catch a big fish there
B. he remembered the moral lesson from his father
C. he wanted to remember his father
D. their children enjoyed fishing there
4.What does the author want to show in the story?
A. It is easy to say something, but difficult to do.
B. An ethical decision is not difficult to make.
C. It is hard to tell right from wrong sometimes.
D. Fishing helps you to make right ethical decisions.
