James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9.There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.
"J.C., "he replied.
She thought he had said "Jesse", and he had a new name.
Owens ran his first race at age 13.After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second? year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.
A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.
The stage was set for Owens? victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic but also political.Hitler did not congratulate any of the African?American winners.
"It was all right with me, "he said years later."I didn?t go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway."
Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.
Owens? Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles and dogs.
"Sure, it bothered me, "he said later."But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat."
In time, however, his gold medals changed his life."They have kept me alive over the years, "he once said."Time has stood still for me.That golden moment dies hard."

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.
Long ago, the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.
Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

The key to a good interpersonal relationship is simple once you understand the role that needs play in making a relationship weak, moderate, average, or strong.
A person who fails in a relationship is someone who neglects the needs of his or her partner. So the first step to establish a successful relationship is to find out what needs the other person has. It is also very important to understand your own needs so that you can help the other person in the relationship to meet your needs.
Unfortunately, not only do many people fail to see or to understand their partner’s needs, but they do not understand their own. Children have wonderful relationships with their parents as long as their needs are being satisfied. When the needs are not satisfied, the relationship changes and problems arise. As a child grows, needs change; it is necessary that parents recognize these changes. As it is with the child to the parents, it is also with the parents to the child.
The way to recognize the needs of other people is by their responses to you. When you do or say something and you get a positive response, you are well on the way to being recognized. The same goes for you. What is it that you respond to in a positive manner? What do you feel good about getting and about doing? What are you totally guiltless about? What can you do with complete confidence and fearlessness? What emotional scene can you control without fear or guilt? Look in these areas for your needs and you will in all probability find your answers.
As stated, our own needs are often hidden. The techniques covered in the power of self-mind control will allow you to discover your needs and show you who you are in regard to interpersonal relationships. Your effectiveness in influencing and dealing with people will greatly increase the power of self-mind control.
From the passage we learn that ________.
A. it is hard to make good interpersonal relationships
B. there are several levels of relationships among people
C. the success of different interpersonal relationships can be measured by needs
D. the first step to establish a successful relationship is to know your own needs
According to Paragraph 2, the most important factor in dealing with people is to ________.
A. be kind to them and help them

C. find out both your needs and theirs

A. A child’s needs change with his growth.
B. A child should also know his parents’ needs.
C. It’s easier to find your own needs than to find others’.

The last two paragraphs are written mainly to tell us ________.
A. why some people fail in a relationship
B. how to increase the power of self-mind control
C. why our needs are often hidden
D. how to recognize others’ needs and yours

One kind of letter most people enjoy writing is the letter of thanks or appreciation. It's pleasant to say "thank you" to someone who has been generous or thoughtful.
Every gift, however trifling, should be acknowledged(表示感谢)with a note of thanks. Every favor or courtesy(礼貌)- every kindness or attention on the part of a neighbor or friend - every expression of hospitality- certainly every letter of condolence(吊唁)or congratulation - deserves sincere and gracious(有礼貌的)acknowledgement.
It doesn't matter if you have already expressed your appreciation in person; a letter must still be written. It can be as brief and simple as you like, but it should express your appreciation with sincerity and warmth. Remember that half the joy of giving is the anticipation(预料)of receiving pleased acknowledgement, and surely the person who has been thoughtful or generous toward you deserves that satisfaction!
The underlined word "trifling" probably means "________".
A. of little value B. important C. valuable D. precious
Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. We need not write a letter of thanks if we have already said "thank you" personally.
B. Usually no replies are written to letters of condolence.
C. Our letters of thanks may be short, but we should be sincere.
D. We should not, however, expect letters of thanks for what we give.
