9.The vast,rural stretches of the United States have,in many ways,defined the American spirit.Up until the 20th century,the majority of Americans lived in the countryside,in what's called"Middle America"or"the Heartland".
But research has shown that growing up in America's Heartland can put students at a disadvantage when it comes to their college education.This,in turn,can hinder (to make it difficult for something to develop or succeed )their social mobility.
A 2015study released by the US Department of Education investigated the gap between urban and rural college students,by concentrating on a group of high school graduates from Indiana.
US'national statistics had previously shown that only 27percent of rural students enroll in college,compared to 37percent of city kids.
What the study found was that urban and rural students left high school with similar academic backgrounds.Yet,the rural students were more inclined to settle for two-year colleges or less selective universities,even though they had the potential to attend to better schools.
The researchers say distance heavily influenced the students'decisions."The farther rural graduates'high schools were from colleges,the more likely rural graduates were to enroll in a two-year college or to‘undermatch'with a college,"the report read.Many of the rural students indicated that living close to family was a priority.
But the researchers also noted that resources were scarcer for the rural students.Selective universities tended to concentrate their recruitment efforts on dense,urban centers,where there were more students to meet.
A rural teen's educational opportunities may also depend on gender.Casey Quinlan,writing for The Atlantic,notes that rural women are more likely to marry sooner."Early marriage occurs most frequently among young adults with low educational background,"Quinlan said,citing a 2010study.
But the problem of social mobility isn't limited to the rural population.The United States has one of the highest rates of income inequality among developed nations.And by some measures,rural residents might have an advantage.
Stanford University's 2015Poverty and Inequality Report found that poverty was hardest to escape in the American South,and in places with high racial segregation.It concluded that urban areas actually"tend to have lower rates of social mobility than rural areas".
"The successful children growing up in rural areas do not just ‘move up' but also generally‘move out'.That is,they typically move to large metropolitan areas,often out of their state of birth,"the report explained.
Rural areas are also hoping to give their residents a boost up the social ladder.In Kansas,graduates can get 15,000 (95,297yuan) to pay off their student debt if they move to a rural county.They keep more money in their pockets and get to enjoy more economic freedom as a result.
74.What is the main reason that the rural graduates choose to enter two-year college or to‘undermatch'with a college?B
A.The graduates in the rural areas start a family as early as possible.
B.Many of the graduates regard living close to family as a priority.
C.A rural teen's educational opportunities may also depend on gender.
D.Most young adults with low educational backgrounds lose the chance easily.
75.The successful children growing up in rural areas do not just ‘move up'but also generally‘move out'Here‘move up'means that they canD.
A.enjoy luxury life like top class
B.develop themselves faster than ever
C.come into the top class of a college
D.climb to the top of the social ladder
76.From the research released by the US Department of Education,we know thatB.

C.the social ladder gap might stop graduates from being enrolled into better colleges
D.the racial segregation stops the graduates in the rural area getting high salary
77.From what author has described in the last paragraph We can predict thatB.
A.the policy might encourage girls in the rural area marry earlier

C.the policy might make selective universities to focus on the rural area

17.One of the newest taboos (禁忌) in American society is the topic of fat.Unlike many other taboos,fat is a topic that America talk about often.It is not taboo to talk about fat; it's taboo to be fat.
The"in"look is thin.In the work world,most companies prefer youthful-looking,slim executives to sell their image and their products to the public.The thin look is associated with youth,vigor and success.The fat person,on the other hand,is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy,self-discipline and self-respect.After all,people think,how can people who care about themselves,and therefore the way they look,allow themselves to become fat?In an image conscious society like the U.S.,fat is"out".
It is not surprising,then,that millions of Americans have become obsessed (着迷)with staying slim and"in shape".The pursuit of youthful physical appearance is not,however,the only reason for America's obsession with diet and exercise.
Recent research has shown the great importance of diet and exercise for personal health.As in most technologically developed nations,the life-style of North Americans has changed very quickly during the course of last century.Modern machines do all the physical labor that people were once forced to do by hand.Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point.As the result of inactivity and disuse,people's bodies can easily become weak and vulnerable to disease.In an effort to avoid such a fate,millions of Americans are spending more of their time exercising.
The effects of this new appreciation of the importance of exercise is clear:parks are filled with joggers and bicyclists,physical education programs are enjoying a newly-founded fame and many companies are providing exercise equipment for their employees to use during the work day.
32.In the United States,fat is somethingA.
A.people always talk about
B.not regarded as a taboo topic
C.people usually pay no attention to
D.belonging to the same treatment as other taboos
33.What do Americans think of thin people?B
A.Their work helps them to look youthful
B.They are energetic and successful.
C.Their appearances affects their behavior
D.They are lacking in self-discipline.
34.According to Paragraph 4,which of the following is an example of"inactivity?C
A.Mary does her housework by hand.
B.Celia takes part in a marathon
C.Cecilia goes to her office by car.
D.Margaret plays badminton every Saturday.
35.Why are parks filled with joggers and bicyclists?D
A.Because these parks are fit for sports.
B.Because people are enjoying prestigious status in parks.
C.Because people are taking part in physical education programs.
D.Because people now recognize they should do more exercise.

14.Anger often makes us uncomfortable. When you find your anger uncomfortable to process, please let it go.But remember to create a healthy anger in your children is to practice creating a healthy anger in yourself.Once you're better at experiencing anger and expressing it in a healthy way, you'll be able to model a good style of anger for your kids.
Some kids deal with anger by creating a"false self':a child who is perfect for their parents.People who have developed a false self are often passive aggressive and seem shallow because they've hid away all the feelings with depth and character.
Ho w do we keep kids from creating false selves We need to raise them in an
e nvironment where it's safe to express feelings.Once you feel more comfortable with your own anger, you can teach your children why anger is a helpful emotion. When your kid expresses anger, help them examine what it is that has made them angry. Why did it make them angry How did it do that Then, you can teach them that while emotions are never wrong and are always valid, our expressions of our emotions are within our control.
People who are afraid of their own anger will never learn how to listen to what their anger is trying to tell them.Instead of teaching our kids that their anger is wrong, that"happy families"are never angry,or that all feelings of anger lead to violence and fear,we can teach our children that anger is OK.Anger is natural,it is normal, and it can be experienced and expressed in a healthy way.
