    17．Instead of hitting the beach，fourteen high school students traded swimming suits for lab coats last summer and turned their attention to scientific experiments．
    The High School Research Program offers high school students guidance with researchers in Texas A&M's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences．Jennifer Funkhouser，academic adviser for the Department of Rangeland Ecology and Management，dirests this four-week summer program designed to increase understanding of research and its career potential（潜能）．
    Several considerations go into selecting students，including grades，school involvement and interest in science and agriculture．And many students come from poorer school districts，Funkhouser says．"This is their chance to learn techniques and do experiments they never would have a chance to do in high school．
    Warner Ervin of Houston is interested in animal science and learned how to tell male from female mosquitoes（蚊子）．His adviser，Craig  Coates，studies the genes of mosquitoes that allow them to fight against malaria and yellow fever．Coates thought this experience would be fun and helpful to the high school students．
    The agricultural research at A&M differs from stereotypes．It's"molecular（分子）science on the cutting edge，"Funkhouser says．The program broadened students'knowledge．Victor Garcia of Rio Grande City hopes to become a biology teacher and says he learned a lot about chemistry from the program．
    At the end of the program，the students presented papers on their research．They're also paid﹩600for their work-another way this program differs from others，which often charge a fee．
    Fourteen students got paid to learn that science is fun，that agriculture is a lot more than milking and plowing and that research can open many doors．

    3．Niels Bohr did well at school without ever being brilliant，usually coming third or fourth in a class of about 20students．If he really was good at any subject，it was，perhaps，physical education．He was an excellent soccer player，yet not as good as his brother．This was Niels Bohr，the worldfamous Nobel prize winning physicist．
    Born to a physiology（生理学）professor，Niels lived in a world of ideas and discussion from his very early childhood at home．He developed an interest in physics and mathematics from the early days of his education．With no laboratory available in school and college，he would perform experiments in his father's laboratory．His first work on surface tension was done here，for which he won the Gold Medal in 1906from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences．

    When the Nazis controlled Denmark，his life became difficult．He had to escape to Sweden in 1943in a fishing boat；from there he fled to England．England opened up opportunities of working on the atom bomb（原子弹）．After a few months he joined a British research team and went to Los Alamos in the United States where the team continued to work on the project．
    Niels was also deeply concerned with making people realize the destructive power of the atomic bomb．He published a letter to the United Nations in 1950which asked them to help get rid of nuclear（核的）weaponsin the world．This and his other activities won Bohr the first U．S．Atoms for Peace Award in 1957．He spent his remaining years showing，people that nuclear energy must be used in a positive and productive way．
