    5．After numerous warnings over the years，you thought coffee probably had a negative effect on your health？Perhaps the drink is not so bad after all．
        The new study，conducted by the National Cancer Institute （NCI），has been published and suggests that coffee does not have a harmful effect on your health．Researchers suggest，based on data examined，older adults who drink a lot of coffee，have a lower risk of death when compared to their non-drinking coffee peers．
        The team of researchers conducting the study analyzed data on 400，000U．S．men and women，aged 50to 71years； the individuals had participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study．This study started in 1995-1996and was tracked until the day a participant passed away，or Dec.31，2008．
        According to a press release on the report，researchers shared that coffee drinkers are"less likely to die from heart disease，respiratory disease，stroke，injuries and accidents，diabetes，and infections，although the association was not seen for cancer．"
        Results indicated participants that drank three or more cups of java a day reduced their risk of death by 10percent．Based on the findings that both caffeinated and non-caffeinated coffee found similar results，researchers are thinking caffeine is not the protective ingredient（原料），although which ingredient in coffee might be，they are not sure．
        Researchers indicate that despite these observational findings，they caution it is not clear whether or not drinking coffee actually extends life expectancy．
    "Coffee is one of the most widely consumed drinks in America，but the association between coffee consumption and risk of death has been unclear．We found coffee consumption to be associated with lower risk of death overall，and of death from a number of different causes，"said Neal Freedman，Ph．D．，Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics，NCI．
    "Although we cannot infer a relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death，we believe these results do provide some comfort that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health，"Freedman said．
        Dr．Cheryl Williams，a registered dietician，told ABC News，"Overall，more research needs to be done to truly understand the compounds in coffee and their biological activity and effect on health，"said Williams．

    18．It took 100years，but finally，scientists proved Albert Einstein's theory that gravitational waves exist．
    The waves were predicted as part of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity nearly 100years ago．It was the theory of the physics behind the workings of our world and the universe．The idea was that the waves are like ripples（涟漪）in space，caused by some of the violent and energetic processes in the Universe．For example，two black holes crashing into each other．
    Now a group of scientists，including ones from CalTech，MIT and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration finally found the gravitational waves．
    David Reitze is the executive（有执行权的）director of the LIGO observatory（天文台） at CalTech．"We have detected gravitational waves．We did it!"Reitze spoke with others at a press conference in Washington，DC this past week．The scientists announced they were able to see ripples in the fabric（织物）of space time．
    What are these gravitational waves？Well，imagine throwing a rock into a pond．When the rock hits the flat surface of the water，it creates ripples or waves．Space time is like the surface of the water．So that means gravitational waves are like the ripples moving out from where the rock hits the water．
    It might be hard to understand，but those gravitational waves expand and contract space and time as they move through space．And when they get to the Earth，the waves pass through，and contract and expand the planet as the wave goes by．
    It was Einstein who said these gravitational waves should be observable．But these are not huge waves．They are very，very small，which is why it took so long to find them．You cannot see them with your eyes．They are smaller than the size of an atom．
    How did the scientists find them？They used a giant scientific tool called LIGO-which stands for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory．The billion-dollar LIGO project is two L-shaped observatories．One is in Louisiana and one in Washington state．Their job was to watch for these gravitational waves．They have been looking on and off since 2002．
    For years，scientists have been watching two black holes in another galaxy（银河）faraway．The two were spinning around each other，moving closer and closer together．When they finally crashed into each other，it was with such power and force，that gravitational waves rang throughout the universe，like a giant bell．Those waves，traveling at the speed of light，finally reached the Earth，some 1.3billion years later．They are the same waves that the scientists announced this past week．Each of the black holes was thought to be 29to 36times the mass of our sun．
    So，what does this discovery mean？
    Abhay Ashtekar is a Penn State physicist，who was not on the discovery team．He said："Our understanding of the heavens changed dramatically．"

    A recent New York Times"House and Home"article featured the story of a man who lives in a glass house．Every wall in his home is transparent；  he has no walls to hide behind，not even in the bathroom．Of course，he lives in a remote area where he doesn't exactly have neighbors looking in and watching his every move．But he has chosen to live without any physical privacy in a home that allows every action to be seen．He has created his own panopticon of sorts．
    The term panopticon was coined by Jeremy Bentham in the late eighteenth century when he was describing an idea for how prisons should be designed．The prisoners'cells would be placed in a circle with a guard tower in the middle．All walls facing the center of the circle would be glass．In that way，every prisoner's cell would be in full view of the guards．The prisoners could do nothing unobserved，but the prisoners would not be able to see the guard tower．They would know they were being watched-or rather，they would know that they could be being watched-but because they could not see the observer，they would never know when the guard was actually monitoring their actions．
    Similarly，it is common that people behave differently when they know they are being watched．We act differently when we know someone is looking； we act differently when we think someone else might be looking．In these situations，we are less likely to be ourselves； instead，we will act the way we think we should act when we are being observed by others．
    In our wired society，many talk of the panopticon as a metaphor （隐喻） for the future．But in many ways，the panopticon is already here．Monitoring cameras are everywhere，and we often don't even know our actions are being recorded．In addition，we leave a record of everything we do online．And most of us have no idea just how much information about us has been recorded and how much data is available to various sources．We can do little to stop the information gathering and exchange and can only hope to be able to control the damage if something goes wrong．
