    On the way，she couldn't stop thinking how terrible it must be for these folks who were essentially stranded．So she went into Pep Boys，an auto supply store．She called over one of the clerks and asked how much a battery for a Toyota Celica cost．
    The clerk asked："What year？"Heidi replied："Does it matter？"To which he replied that the year of the car mattered because the battery needed to fit the mounting（装备）．So she guessed 1980-thinking，if it's within a year or two，the battery won't be that different．She paid about＄40 for the battery，and because she didn't have another to trade in，there was an additional environmental fee of＄10．
    She took it to the folks who were，of course，still there．She told them that she just couldn't go home knowing that they had no way home．They were so surprised．Anyone would have been．The older gentleman told her that he had prayed for help．I guess Heidi was the answer to that prayer，he said．
    Heidi had spent her whole day's earnings on the battery．When she told me her story，I asked："Was it worth the day's work？"You know what she said，don't you？"Oh，yes．"

    17．Surrounded by Brothers
    I know it is wrong to envy（羡慕） your children．But when I see my son，Tonio and his younger brother Sam going down a slide together，one's arm around the other，I know I have missed something wonderful．
    Not only did I never have a brother，but also I had no friendships like theirs．My sister was old enough to help take care of me，so she was more a mother than a playmate，and I was more a pest than a friend．A brother would have been wonderful，but it was not in the family planning．
    Now I finally live with brothers，my sons，Tonio and Sam．I am watching them build the kind of relationship that I once dreamed about．They go to bed together．When one comes into our bed after a nightmare，my wife and I know that before morning his brother will follow．
    Sam manages the world with more ease than his elder brother，whose frustrations often bring him to tears．With a sincere"Smile，Tonio，"Sam is the one who comforts him．Tonio，on the other hand，has stopped playing with boys at his age who don't like playing with Sam．They are always backing each other up．
    I don't know what kind of relationship they will have when they grow up．Parents always want their children to have what they never could．I want them to have each other．So I imagine them going to the same college，marrying sisters and living on the same block．
    That's why I was so worried the day Tonio started kindergarten．I felt that I would lose something too．As we headed for school that morning，both boys seemed relaxed，as if neither had any idea that the day was going to be different，that starting then，Tonio would be leaving behind his brother，his best friend，his right arm．
    Tonio's first day was chaotic，with hundreds of children outside looking for their teachers．Before any of us could say goodbye，Tonio disappeared with his new classmates．He turned to wave and then was gone．It was so sudden．Sam even didn't see him go．Although parents had been asked to ease the craziness of the first day by staying out of the school，I lifted Sam up and took him to Tonio's classroom，looking for a glimpse of Tonio．Sam spotted him first．
    My wife and I didn't head back home immediately，stopping instead at a coffee shop to treat Sam to hot chocolate．We even let him eat ice-cream with his fingers．Sam was still quiet，so I asked him if he missed his brother already．
    He didn't answer．Instead he asked，"Daddy，is Tonio going to be gone forever？"
    "No，Sammy，"I said，feeling happy about his sweet question．"Not forever，just until three o'clock．"
    I sometimes think that the greatest thing I have ever done is to help create these brothers．And I didn't stop with them．We had another child，and for the third time in a row，it was a boy．It wasn't long before his brothers climbed into the crib（婴儿床） to play with him．I am surrounded by brothers．

    7．My parents have certainly had their troubles，and as their child I'll never know how they made it to 38years of marriage．They loved each other，but they didn't seem to like each other very much．Dad was too fond of his beer，and he talked down to Mom a lot．When she tried to stand up to him，a fight would inevitably follow．
    It was my dad's disease that began to change things．The year 1998was the beginning of a remarkable transformation for my family．My father，Jim Dineen，the always-healthy，weightlifting，neve-rmissed-a-day-of-work kind of dad，discovered he had kidney disease．
    The decision to go ahead with a transplant for my father was a long one，mostly because he had liver （肝脏）damage too．One physician's assistant told him，"According to your file，you're supposed to be dead．"And for a while，doctors mistakenly thought that he would need not just a kidney transplant，but a liver transplant too． Dad's future hung in midpoint．
    When the donor testing process finally began in the spring of 2003，numerous people，including me，my uncle Tom，and my mom，came back as matches of varying degrees．But Mom was the one who insisted on going further．She decided to donate a kidney to my father．She said she wasn't scared，and it was the right thing to do．We all stepped back in amazement．
    At last a date was chosen-November 11，2003．All of a sudden，the only thing that seemed to matter to Dad was telling the world what a wonderful thing Mom was doing for him．A month before the surgery，he sent her birthday flowers with a note that read，"I love you and I love your kidney!Thank you!"
    Financially，the disease was upsetting to them．So my sister and I were humbled and surprised when，shortly before his surgery day，Dad handed us a diamond jewelry that we were to give to Mom after the operation．He'd accumulated his spare dollars to buy it．
    At the hospital on the day of the transplant，all our relatives and friends gathered in the waiting room and became involved in a mean euchre （尤可牌游戏）tournament．My family has always handled things with a lot of laughter，and even though we were all tense，everyone was taking bets on how long this"change of conduct"would last in my parents．
    We'd informed Dad that if he chose to act like a real pain on any particular day after the operation，he wasn't allowed to blame it on PMS just because he'd now have a female kidney!
    The surgeries went well，and not long afterward，my sister and I were allowed to go in to visit．Dad was in a great deal of pain but，again，all he could talk about was Mom．Was she okay？How was she feeling？Then the nurses let us do something unconventional．As they were wheeling Mom out of the recovery room，they rolled her into a separate position to visit Dad．It was strange to see both our parents hooked up to IVs and machines and trying to talk to each other through tears．The nurses allowed us to present the diamond jewelry to Mom so that Dad could watch her open it．Everybody was crying，even the nurses．
    As I stood with digital camera in hand，I tried to keep the presence of mind to document the moment．My dad was having a hard time fighting back emotion，and suddenly my parents unexpectedly reached out to hold each other's hands．
    In my nearly 35years of existence，I'd never seen my parents do that，and I was spellbound．I snapped a picture and later rushed home to make sure I'd captured that enormous，life-defining moment．After so many years of disagreement，it was apparent to me that they finally understood how much each loved the other．
