    8．Retired nurse Sue Collins was just beginning the second length of her local pool when her morning swim suddenly became anything but a pleasure．
    Two months ago Sue，69，who has never suffered from asthma or any other breathing problem in the past，suddenly found herself hard for breath．
    "I felt as if my throat and oesophagus（食道）were closing up，"says Sue．
    Sue is convinced the problem is related to the indoor swimming baths．"I spend half the year in Turkey and swim every day outside in a pool or the sea there and never have this problem，"she says．
    She may be right，because although a trip to the pool is the perfect exercise for many，the chlorine （氯气）used to keep the water free from germs can lead to problems．
    But in most cases it's not the chlorine that causes problems，but the by-products formed when chlorine interacts with other substances-and this is mostly due to people not showering before they enter the pool．
    "This then poisons the water for them and for others，"says Dr．Hull．"The chlorine interacts with sweat and urine（尿素）on the skin and forms by-products called chloramines that float above the surface as a gaseous solution that can be inhaled in．"
    Chloramines are heavier than air so hang over the water where they are easily breathed in．Some believe they may cause lung disorders．A Swedish study in 2013 examining the health of 146workers at 46indoor pools found that 17per cent had airway trouble at work-but no problems at home．
    As Dr．Hull says：‘People need to remember that showering isn't just for them．It is for the greater good．'

    12．From VOA Learning English，this is the Technology Report．
    Researchers are now using three-dimensional，or 3D printing to create models of the human heart to help heart specialists．The heart doctors can use the models to better help patients before an operation．
    Surgeons regularly use digital images to explore the heart in close detail．But no two human hearts are alike．This led Matthew Bramlet to create exact heart models from those images．Dr．Bramlet is a pediatric or children's heart expert at the University of Illinois College of Medicine．He says the 3-D models show information he cannot get any other way．
    A 3-D printer uses images from a digital display to create a physical model of a human heart．Matthew Bramlet says doctors can use the model，in his words，"to understand the anatomy for the first time．""Even when I will take the MRI and render the images，even a print heart that is sort of spinning on the screen，it's still a 2-D screen．Now we've pulled it out of the screen so that you can actually hold it in your hand arid evaluate the anatomy for the first time in a manner that makes sense and is logical．"
    Pictures from medical tests like CAT scan or MRI are sent to a 3-D printer to create a heart in a plaster or clay form．The printer then constructs the heart，thin layer by thin layer．Dr．Bramlet says the model matches the real heart in every detail．"When we're done with the model and make our decision，we want to be able to go back to the source image and confirm those findings，"he says．
    Dr．Bramlet has built model hearts for different kinds of heart operations．All of the operations were successful．In his first ease，digital images showed only one tiny hole in a baby's heart．But，the 3-D printed model showed several defects or problems that the baby was born with．Dr．Bramlet says those defects could not be seen easily in the images．The heart surgeon was able to change the type of surgery for the patient based on the 3-D model．He added that 3-D heart models save time during heart operations．
    Kathy Magliato is a cardiac surgeon at Saint John's Health Center in Los Angeles．She welcomes the new technology．She says it could help her make better decisions before she operates on the hearts of her patients．"The fact is that I can then take this very complicated structure，which has endless possibilities of what it could look like anatomically when I open body，and you give it to me before the operation and I can hold it in my hand and plan an operation around what I'm seeing，touching and feeling．That to me is what can potentially change the game in an operation and save lives．
    Matthew Bramlet continues to research the technology．He is working with the National institutes of Health to build a 3-D library that includes heart models and images that others can use．

    1．Wan tried to ride a rocket chair．You have to hand it to Wan Hu．Legend has it that when the Chinese official，Wan Hu，decided to visit the moon，he didn't ask one of his servants to sit in the hot seat．He settled himself into a wood chair fixed with 47rockets．When 47torch-bearing assistants lit the rockets，there was aloud sound and lots of smoke--but no more Wan Hu．There is，however，a crater named for Wan Hu on the far side of the moon．
    2．Isaac Newton stuck a needle in his eye．Though best known for discovering the laws of gravitation，Newton also did pioneering research in optics．He experimented with prisms（棱镜），but that didn't reveal much about the eye's structure or how it senses color．To learn more，the unusual physicist took a type of needle known with a sharp tip and，he wrote，"put it between my eye and the bone as near to the backside of my eye as I could．"

    7．Frederick Hoelzel ate glass．And not just glass．During the 1920s and 1930s，University of Chicagoresearcher Frederick Hoelzel reportedly swallowed grain，glass，ball bearings，thread，wire，and other non-food items in order to show how long it would take the items to pass through his guts（肠子）．Despite his risky research，Hoelzel lived into old age．
