Attention please! Now I will give you a brief introduction to the Winter Festival. It is a free event for all people to enjoy, and is organized by a team of volunteers. The first Winter Festival was introduced the year before last. Sadly due to a lack of money, no festival was held last year. This year the government may provide $15,000 to the festival. They also persuaded the businessmen around the town to offer the rest $5,000.
There will be a free art exhibition on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December in the Center Park of the town. The opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and there is an opening night only on Friday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.. Different from other exhibitions, this art exhibition is really a special one because the public will have the chance to watch the paintings which are from the town’s school. And all the paintings are created by the students.
It is great that the Festival is going to host a wonderful sound of music in the Main Exhibition Hall this year. This program aims to show some of the musical talents that we have in town. Everyone watching the performance had better not wear formal clothes, but fancy dress. And in the program, you will hear classical music, pop music, rock music and operas.

【题目】Every city, in fact, can be felt by its warmth-not in terms of its natural climate but its human touch.
About twenty years ago, I arrived in Australia. Searching for a place in a map in the street, I was approached by an elderly man who asked “How are you? Are you lost? How can I help you?”, which really impressed and warmed me. Another time, as I was pushing my bike on the sidewalk one night, a young lady shouted to me: “Carry me please” and then jumped onto my bicycle. While we had a little chat, she got where she wanted and hopped off my bike with “Thanks, bye!” At that moment, I had a sense as much of pleasant surprise as of “being trusted”.
Still in Australia, two of my friends decided to hitch(搭便车)their way to Sydney in order to save money. A young driver stopped, and luckily he was also going to Sydney, so he let them in and even allowed them to drive while he went to sleep on the back seat. About eight hours later, they arrived and he woke up. Saying thanks to each other, they went their separate ways.
In my opinion, no matter how developed and advanced it is, if in general a place presents itself with a cold and indifferent(冷漠的)face to people, especially to strangers, even keeping them highly alert(警惕的)not to be cheated all the time, can perhaps hardly be classified as a land of civilization(文明). In a sense, the attitude towards strangers that the people have in the city mirrors its warmth.

A. A certain temperature. B. Interpersonal communication.
C. Advanced ideas. D. Unique culture.
【2】What do the native people have in common?
A. Trustful and warm. B. Watchful and alert.
C. Cold and indifferent. D. Caring and guardless.
【3】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. My Experience Abroad B. The Warmth of a City
C. A Land of Civilization D. Valuable Memories
【4】By what is a city’s civilization decided?
A. Its people’s self-guard sense.
B. Its fast development.
C. Its advanced equipment.
D. Its people’s attitude towards strangers.

【题目】Once an old man rose early to read each morning. His grandson wanted to be just like his grandfather, so tried to emulate him every way he could.
One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read just like you do, but I don’t understand most of it, and I forget whatever I do understand immediately I close the book. So what good is it for me to read?”
The grandfather, who was putting coal on the fire, said, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as told to, but the water leaked out before he could get the basket home.
The grandfather laughed, saying, “You’ll have to move a little faster.” This time he ran faster, but again the basket emptied.
