    13．Agricultural experts met in Ethiopia last week to discuss ways to help sub-Saharan Africa become a major producer of wheat．The area traditionally produced little wheat，while North Africa was the grain basket．
    Wheat production fell sharply in sub-Saharan countries during the 1980s．In the 1960s，attempts were made to grow wheat in sub-Saharan Africa，including South Africa and Zimbabwe．But those countries found it was less costly to import wheat from Europe and the United States．Another problem is that Africa's wheat farms were often far from population centers．There also were transportation issues．And some lowlands were not a good place to grow wheat．
    Hans Joachim Braun，one of the experts，says now is a good time to increase wheat production．In the last four years we have seen three major price hikes，where the wheat price and other staple process （主食加工）exploded．And that puts a big，big bill on countries which are depending on wheat imports，and Africa is the biggest wheat importer．
    He also says demand for wheat in sub-Saharan Africa is growing faster than for any other crop．With higher income people would like to have more diversified（多样化）food．But that is possible not the most important one．The most important one is that there is a tremendous migration（移民）of in particular male labor to the cities．And wheat products are convenient food because you can easily buy it．It's easy to process and you also can store it for a few days，which is different from some of the maize and rice products．
    There are three possible challenges for growing more wheat in Africa：climate change，disease and pests，like insects．Mr．Braun says rising temperatures should not have a major effect on wheat．In fact，he says，it could help wheat grow in areas with high rainfall totals．As for fighting disease and pests，experts suggest growing more resistant crops．In addition，railroads and roads would have to be improved so large amounts of wheat could be moved to large markets．

    But one problem is that friends and family have been so amazed with the"Tweet treat"machine that．they have starting to send tweets to Toby too．So Nat has had to restrict feeding time to make sure Toby doesn't turn into Tubby．
    "People have been sending him food at all hours of the day，so I had to limit it to between 9 a．m．and 9 p．m..I'm thinking of doing an updated one which measures his weight before he is fed，just to make sure he's not putting on too much puppy fat，"explained Nat．
    How Nat's Twitter Feeder Works：
    When a message is sent to@feedtoby it is received by a mini-computer that is linked to the food machine．
    When the mini-computer receives the message，a bell rings and Toby comes running over and sits in front of the feeding machine．Next the machine's motor pulls open a trap door which releases a serving of food．

    12．Turning the lights out or wearing a blindfold while eating could be a quick way to lose weight，according to scientists．The simple trick works because it stops diners eating for pleasure rather than for calories．It also triggers （引发） a part of the brain that is worried that unseen food may go bad．
    An experiment by the University of Konstanz，in Germany，found that people who were blindfolded consumed nine percent fewer calories before they felt full，compared to those who could see．They also vastly overestimated how much they had eaten because they could not see how much was left on the plate．Blindfolded volunteers estimated they had eaten 88percent more than they actually had．
    Scientists believe that not seeing food on the table also allows the body to know when it is full in real time rather than remembering past experiences where it might have taken a full plate to feel full．
    In the experiment，50 people were blindfolded and 40were allowed to see their food．All were told not to eat within two hours of the experiment．They were then given three 95g bowls of chocolate ice cream and invited to eat for 15minutes．Their bowls were taken away and the remaining ice-cream weighed，while the participants were quizzed on how much they thought they had eaten．
    On average the group who could see ate 116g while the blindfolded groups ate 105g．However，the blindfolded group believed they had eaten 197g while compared with 159g for the non-blind volunteers．They were also asked how pleasant the ice-cream tasted and the blindfolded group rated lower than those who could see．
    "The experienced pleasure of eating was significantly lower in the blindfolded group．Not seeing the food might have decreased the appetite．Sight plays an important role in the eating experience and in the overall dining experience．"
    Previous studies have shown that the visual influence of food plays a large part in the taste．While restaurants that allow diners to eat in the dark state that it triggers other senses，in fact eating in darkness is likely to taste far milder than usual．
