①Some people who find themselves facing a problem react by just giving up.But it is not good to
escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young
people go through the same difficult process that you are going through:meeting new situations, developing
new skills,and testing their abilities.
②If you are unhappy about something, face it.Try to state the problem in a few words,so  that you
will know exactly what you are_up_against.Then see if you can "put your finger" on the cause of your
unhappiness.
③In many eases,we only "think" there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can
overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.
④For example,a boy wanted to be a debater (辩论家). When he tried out for the debating team as
a freshman, the coach thought he was hopeless. He was shy; he had a highpitched voice; and his posture
(体态) was poor.Although he was given little hope of success,he took advantage of every opportunity
to debate. He studied successful speakers and evaluated his own weaknesses and advantages. Then he
spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked at developing good posture
and at speaking clearly.By his junior year,he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he
was on the winning team in his state. He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his
problem.
⑤Although direct attack is often the bestway to meet problems,we have to be realistic (现实的) in
judging situations.Sometimes it is necessary to change either the method or the goal.
⑥A boy who wants to be a great football player may not be too strong and not quite fast enough for
football. In this situation, becoming a great football player may be an unreasonable goal for him. However,
he may become outstanding in tennis or golf, and satisfy his desire to take part in sports.
⑦A girl who is not goodlooking may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she
may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further. In this situation,
she must change her method of achieving her goal.
⑧So,although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems,it is important to study the
situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

1. From the first paragraph,we can learn that________.

A. it is really hard to escape from problems
B. people can solve all the problems that they meet
C. it is important for people to face the problems
D. few people like making excuses for failures

2. The underlined phrase "are up against" in the second paragraph could be best replaced by______.

A. are interested in
B. are faced with
C. come over
D. look after

3. Which decision was made by the boy who wanted to be a debater?

A. Adjusting the goal.
B. Judging situations.
C. Changing his styles.
D. Making a direct attack.

4. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

(①~⑧stand for "Paragraph 1~Paragraph 8")

5. The author showed the example of the girl in order to explain________.

A. how important the appearance is
B. how hard to develop a good personality
C. how to achieve the goal in a different way
D. how to win popularity in a short time

七.阅读理解 (20分)

When did you see a polar bear ? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps ? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These  “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3 degrees. And the water temperature was a little higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.

Doctors don’t agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so slow that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and the water tempreature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system (循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and could not try cold-water swimming.

The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all the year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

David Beckham had a dream: to be the first English player to appear in four World Cups.

But now it appears that dream is over after a serious injury to his Achilles tendon(跟腱)which means he could be out of action for around six months. With this year's World Cup in South Africa only three months away, sadly Beckham looks set to miss out.

The injury happened while Beckham was playing for AC Milan against AC Chievo in the Italian league. After attempting to kick the ball he collapsed to the ground and hobbled off the pitch before being stretchered(被担架抬走)away.

It is not yet known whether he has completely severed(切断)his Achilles tendon or only torn it. The player has now flown to Finland for assessment and treatment by a knee specialist.

England manager Fabio Capello fears the worst for Beckham's World Cup chances.

"We have to wait for the results of the scan but it looks like he is out of the World Cup," he said in a statement. "I spoke with him after the game on Sunday night to offer my support.

"David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow."

Beckham's former manager at American club LA Galaxy, Alexei Lalas, echoed(共鸣)Capello's words of support:

"It is a horrible situation for Beckham. I know how much it meant to him to be in the World Cup and how important he was to the England team.

David Beckham is now 34 and some are asking whether this serious injury could mean his whole career is over.

Whatever happens, as one of football's best-known and popular players, Beckham will have no shortage of encouragement from fans around the world.

Some will remember Beckham's miraculous recovery from an Achilles injury in 2006, when he was back on the pitch after only eight weeks.

If he could repeat the same feat,in time for the World Cup it really would be the stuff of fairytales.

So, perhaps all is not lost. Optimists will take heart from Alexei Lalas' words:

"You never want to write off(排除)David Beckham as he has shown us his ability to bounce back(恢复原状)."

A.Beckham had a dream?

A.Missing the World Cup will be a big success.

B.Missing Beckham means a great failure.

A.Beckham will definitely not be able to play football again
