【题目】I’m afraid there might have been an audience of about 100,000 watching his live concert in Bird Nest last night, ________?

A. weren’t there B. didn’t there

C. haven’t there D. hadn’t there

【答案】A

本句主句I'm afraid…是表示肯定,所以反意疑问句部分用否定;从句“there might have been an audience of…last night”,所以要用weren’t there。故选A。

【题目】The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists(人类学家). Descriptions like “Paleolithic(旧石器时代) Man”, “Neolithic(新石器时代) Man”, etc., neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twenty-first century, they will surely choose the label “Legless Man”. Histories of the time will go something like this: “In the twenty-first century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And the surprising thing is that they didn’t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable railways, ski-lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were ruined by the presence of large car parks.”

The future history books might also record that we lost the right of using our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, the unclear picture of the countryside constantly slides over the window. When you mention the most impressive place-names in the world, the typical 21st century traveler always says “I’ve been there.”—meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you skip all experience. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

1Anthropologists name man nowadays “Legless Man” because _________.

A. people prefer cars, buses and trains

B. people travel without using legs

C. lifts prevent people from walking

D. people use their legs less and less

2According to the passage, what might make people lose the right of using their eyes?

A. The modern means of transportation. B. A bird’s-eye view of the world.

C. The unclear sight from the vehicles. D. The fast-paced life style.

3From the passage, we know traveling at high speeds means _________.

A. appreciating beautiful scenery B. experiencing life skills

C. focusing on the next destination D. feeling physical tiredness

4What does the author intend to tell us?

A. Modern transportation devices have replaced legs.

B. Traveling makes the world a small place.

C. Human’s history develops very fast.

D. The best way to travel is on foot.

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
Valentine's Day, a day traditionally reserved for expressing romantic love, is observed practically all around the world. However, not many people are familiar with Sweetest Day. Actually it is a holiday, especially designed to express love and care for those who were routinely neglected(忽视)by society.
Sweetest Day was the idea of Herbert Birch Kingston, who worked for a company in Cleveland, Ohio. He felt that there were plenty of children, especially orphans and poor kids, who didn't necessarily get the attention they deserved. Thus in 1922, he launched the first Sweetest Day to give out boxes of candy to mainly poor children.
Since the day picked was the third Saturday in October, this became the traditional time to celebrate Sweetest Day. The tradition was so enjoyed that people often looked beyond kindness to treating their own friends or family to treats on Sweetest Day.
In the US, Sweetest Day is celebrated primarily in the Northeastern region of the US, still on the third Saturday of October. Yet news of the tradition, which began nearly 100 years ago, has spread to other parts of the country, especially as people who lived in those areas moved elsewhere. People may distribute candy or small gifts to those in patient homes, hospitals, foster homes, or mental institutions, and they may also treat friends and family to little gifts from the heart.
In keeping with the original tradition, celebrating Sweetest Day should really be most focused on people who ordinarily don't have the good fortune of attention from friends or family, either due to difficult family circumstances or to poverty. This can be a great tradition to start if your community doesn't routinely celebrate the day, and there are many candy manufacturers that are willing to help donate or reduce costs on gifts intended for people in unfortunate circumstances.
(1)The original purpose of Sweetest Day is to ________.
A.provide an occasion to know orphans
B.make those poor children happy
C.make your friends and family happy
D.distribute candy to those lovely children
(2)What do people barely do on Sweetest Day?
A.Buy flowers for your sweetheart.
B.Visit patients who have to be in hospital.
C.Give friends gifts to make them happy.
D.Care for children who lost their parents.
(3)We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.it is vital to contact the candy manufacturers
B.it is necessary to call on friends or families
C.it is important to help those in need
D.it is common to serve your community

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
When you get in your car, you reach for it. When you're at work, you take a break to have a moment alone with it. When you get into a lift, you play with it.
Cigarettes? Cup of coffee? No, it's the third most addictive(使人上瘾的) thing in modern life, the cell phone. And experts say it is becoming more difficult for many people to curb their wishes to hug it more tightly than most of their personal relationships.
With its shiny surface, its smooth and satisfying touch, the cell phone connects us to the world even as it disconnects us from people three feet away. It affects us in ways its inventors in the late 1940s never imagined.
Dr. Chris Knippers, an expert at the Betty Ford Center in Southern California, reports that the overuse of cell phones has become a social problem not much different from other harmful addictions: a barrier to one-on-one personal contact, and an escape from reality.
Sounds extreme, but we've all witnessed the evidence: the person at a restaurant who talks on the phone through an entire meal, ignoring his kids around the table; the woman who talks on the phone in the car, ignoring her husband; the teen who texts messages all the way home from school, avoiding contact with kids all around him. Is it just rude, or is it a kind of unhealthiness? And pardon me, but how is this improving the quality of life?
Jim Williams, an industrial sociologist based in Massachusetts, he points to a study by Duke University researchers that found one-quarter of Americans say they have no one to discuss their most important personal business with. Despite the growing use of phones, e-mail and instant messaging, in other words, Williams says studies show that we don't have as many friends as our parents. “Just as more information has led to less wisdom, more acquaintances(熟人) through the Internet and cell phones have produced fewer friends,” he says.
If the cell phone has truly had these effects, it's because it has become very widespread. In 1987, there were only 1 million cell phones in use. Today, almost 300 million Americans carry them. The number of cell phones is far more than that of wired phones in the United States.
(1)Which of the following could probably best explain the title of the passage?
A.Cell phone users smoke less than they used to.
B.More people use cell phones than smoke cigarettes.
C.Cell phones have become as addictive as cigarettes.
D.Using cell phone is just as cool as smoking cigarettes.
(2)The underlined word “curb” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A.rescue
B.control
C.develop
D.ignore
(3)Which idea does the example of a woman talking on the phone in the car support?
A.Women use cell phones more often than men.
B.Talking on the phone while driving is dangerous.
C.Cell phones make one-on-one personal contact easy.
D.Cell phones do not necessarily bring people together.
(4)What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A.How to make people get closer.
B.The advantages of wired phones.
C.How to use cell phones properly.
D.Giving an example to prove the bad effects of cell phones.
