    8．A serious problem for today's society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives．It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society．I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem．
    First，employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees．To make this possible，a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose．But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees，it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs．
    Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual．This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement．This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years． This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor．In addition，the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly．This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions．Furthermore，some institutions should be created for senior citizens，which can help provide a comfortable life for them．Unfortunately，as the present situation in our country shows，this is not a truly viable answer．The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly，particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young．
    One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent．
    To sum up，all these options have advantages and disadvantages．Therefore，it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations．

    13．Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her first major American movie，Roman Holiday，which was released in 1953．But she is remembered as much for her aid work as for her acting．
    Born in Belgium in 1929，Audrey's father was British and her mother was Dutch．Audrey was sent to live at a British school for part of her childhood．During World War II，she lived and studied in the Netherlands．Her mother thought it would be safe from German  attacks．Audrey studied dance as a teenager and during college when she returned to London after the war．But she realized she wasn't going to be a ballerina （芭蕾舞女演员）．So she began taking acting parts in stage shows．Later she began to get small parts in movies．
    But it was Audrey Hepburn's move to America that brought her true fame．In 1951she played the character"Gigi"in the Broadway play of the same name to great critical praise．Two years later，Roman Holiday made her a star at the age of 24．
    Audrey made more than 25movies．Among her most popular roles was Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tifany's in 1961．Three years later she played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady．
    She was married two times and had one son by each husband．In 1989，the UN Children's Fund named Audrey a goodwill ambassador．She travelled all over the world in support of UNICEF （联合国儿童基金会） projects．The UN agency said she was a tireless worker．She often gave 15interviews a day to gain money and support for UNICEF projects．
    Audrey Hepburn often said her loyalty to UNICEF was the result of her experiences as a child during World War II．She said she knew what it was like to be starving and to be saved by international aid．She was a goodwill ambassador until her death in 1993from colon cancer．

    3．Olav Brutolsen was the most terrible of all the Vikings．With just his bare hands he could defeat a bull in a matter of seconds．To make sure people knew just who he was，his helmet and cloak（斗篷）were decorated with his victory souvenirs．On his helmet were over a hundred horns，and on his cloak were a thousand precious stones； one stone for each enemy he had defeated．
    In his city everyone would make way for him as he went by，but one day a young man who was absent-mindedly reading as he walked，bumped into Olav．Olav was furious．He scolded the young man and challenged him to a fight to the death．The skinny young man had no choice； all he could do was accept on one condition：
    "I can't see very well，and i don't know you，so I'll need you keep your helmet and cloak on during the fight so i can make you out．"
    Olav laughed a hearty laugh and accepted the young man's stupid condition，before launching himself at the youth．The boy was swift，and he only just managed to slip through Olav's hands．The same happened each time Olav attacked，and as the fight went on it became easier for the young man to evade the attacks．Although no one could believe how the boy did it，they all expected him to fall down dead as soon as Olav landed the first blow．
    But that blow never came．Olav had been attacking for more than five minutes，and after ten minutes he fell to the ground，as if dead．
    Many onlookers thought the young man must be some kind of wizard，but the boy，who was a medical student by the name of Virtensen，had demonstrated to everyone how Olav's pride had been enough to make him fall under the weight of his helmet and cloak．When Olav came to，like a good warrior he accepted his defeat．From that day he got rid of the useless souvenirs on his helmet and cloak，and returned to simple clothing．Now wherever he walked he was just like anyone else．Everywhere，that is，except for when he walked on the battlefield，where he came to be recognized not for his many horns or his bejeweled cloak，but for his unparalleled force．

    what we'd learned from our parents and what we're GRATEFUL for．I included my response below．

    A few months ago we talked about beliefs we've had from childhood，many of them not so positive．I wanted to hear some more positive answers，so I presented this question．
    QUESTION：What is a specific lesson you've learned from your parents that you're grateful for？
    I realize that I am so grateful to my mother （far from perfect but REALLY unusual）．She always goes exactly for what she wants to go for （aromatherapy，bowling，photography，getting her PhD，having a farm）．I thought all women were like that but this isn't the case．

    I am grateful that my mom is a giver by nature．Watching her open up our home for many people，host/entertain，do favors without hesitation and give and give and give．It has allowed me to truly believe and see that it is better to give than to receive．

    What a great question．Things I learned that I'm grateful for…
    -Value of working hard．Sitting at the table for hours practicing spelling-bee books and math homework．
    -Always open your house to anyone．Invite everyone over．My mom loves to make food for huge crowds，even if I call her 10minutes ahead of time and tell her I'm bringing 10friends over．
    -Cut costs mercilessly on things we couldn't afford （fancy clothes，cable TV，etc．）  but spend extravagantly on things that mattered （anything education or sports-related）．
    -So many more．Again，what a great question this is!
