The subway train moved back and forth, its wheels producing more loud sounds than ever against the tracks. Outside the window was just the  21  cold of winter. The carriage was filled with frozen self-centered, bored  22 .
Suddenly a little boy  23  his way in between grown-up legs.  24  his father stayed by the door, the boy sat next to the window, surrounded by  25 , half-awake adults. What a brave child, I thought. As the train entered a tunnel (隧洞), something totally  26  happened. The little boy slid down from his seat and put his  27  on my knee. For a moment, I thought that he wanted to go  28  me and returned to his father, so I moved a bit. But instead of moving on, the boy held his  29  up towards me. He wanted to tell me something, I thought. I  30  to listen to what he had to say. Wrong  31 ! He kissed me softly on the cheek.
Then he returned to his  32 , settled down and cheerfully started looking out of the window. But I was  33. What happened? A kid kissing an unknown grown-up on the train? To my amazement, the kid  34  to kiss all my neighbors.
Nervous and puzzled, we looked questioningly at his father. “He’s so happy to be  35 .” the father said. “He’s been very sick.”
The train stopped and the father and son got down and  36  into the crowd. The doors closed. On my cheek I could still  37  the child’s kiss -- a kiss that had caused  38  soul-searching. How many grown-ups go around kissing each other  39  the joy of being alive? How many even give much thought to the privilege of living? What would happen  40  we all just started being ourselves?
The little boy has given us a sweet but serious lesson: Don’t let yourself die before your heart stops!

Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 41. I was in high school. The test was the final for the class. It was a rather 1test. I didn’t know how 2I had done but I knew there were things on 3that I didn’t know.
I remember 4 waiting for the result. When Mr. Bales5my paper on my desk, I was6 . There in big7numbers, circled to draw attention, was my grade — 41! I 8my paper so that others couldn’t see it. A 41 was not 9that you wanted your classmates to see. Finally, Mr. Bales stood behind the desk and 10the class. “The grades were not very good; 11of you passed,” he announced. “ The highest grade in the class was a 41, so all of you failed.”
A 41. That was me. Suddenly my dismal(阴沉的) face didn’t look quite so bad. I had the highest grade. I felt a lot12. As soon as I got home, my mother asked me, “How did you do on your test?” “I made a 41,” I said. My mother’s 13changed suddenly. “You failed.” “But I had the highest grade in the class!” I replied. “ I don’t 14what everyone else had. You failed. It doesn’t matter if everyone else failed too; what matters is what you do,” my mother15answered.
For years, I thought that was a harsh judgment. My mother was always that16. It didn’t matter what the other kids did; it only mattered what I did and17I did it excellently.
We often don’t understand the wisdom of good parents until we ourselves stand 18the parenting shoes. My mother’s philosophy(人生态度)has19 me throughout life. The path of the crowd is wide but the path to pass the tests of life is 20and there are very few people on it.

I had not thought I would have to go down into the pit with snakes in order to catch them, so I was wearing the   36   sort of clothes. I explained this to my friends, yet they very kindly lent me these trousers and shoes, which were quite   37   and strong. So, as I could think of    38    excuses, they tied the rope round my waist and started to   39   me into the pit. Just before I landed on the bottom, I   40   up and told them to stop lowering me. I wanted to   41   the ground that I was going to land on, to make sure there were no snakes in the way. The area being   42  , I shouted to them to lower away, and at that moment   43   things happened.
Firstly, the   44   went out; secondly, one of the shoes which I had   45   from my friends and which were too   46   for me, came off. So there I was, standing at the   47   of  the ten-foot-deep pit, with no light and no shoe on one foot,   48    by seven or eight deadly Baboon snakes. I had never been more   49  . I had to wait in the dark, without daring to move while my friends   50   the lamp out, lit it again and lowered it into the pit again.
With plenty of light and both shoes on, I felt much   51   and began with the task of catching snakes. This was really easy enough. I had a   52   stick in my hand, and with this I came near each snake, pinned it down with the fork and then picked it up by the back of the neck, and put it into my snake bag. What I had to   53   out for was that while I was busy catching one snake, another might move round   54   me and I might step back on it. However, it all passed without   55  . And by the end of half an hour I had caught eight of the Baboon snakes.
