The most widespread fallacy (谬论)of all is that colds ire caused by cold. They are actually caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coining into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in the isolated Arctic Regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.
During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.
In the Second World War prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp, naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty rooms. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.
If then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter. Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on
And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes
After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion 可知志愿者在洗完热水澡之后再浸泡冷水,然后再湿淋淋地吹风,有的还要一直穿湿袜子,在雨中锻炼直至筋疲力尽,因此志愿者们遭受了极大的痛苦,故选 A

With the help of Katia, a roommate of me, I've soon got used to live without my parents around. Katia, like many other Russian girls, are nice and lively. We became friends shortly after we meet each other. Although her English is a little hardly to understand, we enjoy chatting and we usually talk a lot about our own family. To raise students' aware of making the most of used things, the Students' Union held a flea market on campus recent. The event attracted a crowd from the whole school, who come here to sell, purchase or swap used goods with their schoolmate. On the market, you could find vary things, from second-hand textbooks, magazines to CDs, bikes or clothes at a lower price.

Everyone, please imagine, a big explosion breaks out as the plane takes us high in the sky. The plane is full of smoke and the engine sounds scary. Two minutes later, the engines are turned off. We are now sitting in a plane with no sound. And we can see: Life is over.

That really happened. In January 2009, I had a front-row seat on Flight 1549, the plane that crash-landed in the Hudson River in New York.

Now let me tell you the three things I learned when the silence came.

First, I thought about all the people I wanted to reach out to but didn’t. I thought about all the experiences I wanted to have but never did. I no longer wanted to put off anything in life. Second, I really regretted the time I wasted on things that did not matter. I decided to remove negative energy from my life. Third, I realized, wow, dying was not scary. But it was very sad just because I only wished I could have seen my kids grow up.

Fortunately, I was given the gift of a miracle of not dying that day. I was given another gift, with which I was to see into the future and come back and live differently.

About a month later, my wife and I were at a performance by my daughter, not much artistic talent. Yet, I’m crying. I realized that above all, the only goal in my life was to be a good father.

Audience, again, imagine the same thing happening on your plane. How would you change? What would you get done? And more than anything, are you being the best parent you can?

Thank you.

Distance runners often worry about “hitting the wall” during training or races, when negative thoughts become so overpowering that they make it difficult to continue.1 At that time, the body’s glycogen(糖原) supplies become exhausted. As a result, many runners feel exhausted and discouraged, slow their pace, have trouble focusing and want to quit or walk.2 Here are a few sports psychologist-approved techniques to try, which could have major benefits for an athlete’s performance and well-being.

1.Make a motivational song list.Distracting(分心) yourself with some great tunes can help you make it to the finish line faster.3

2.Try the partner system.A running partner can keep you motivated and on-track,and might even improve your performance, research shows.

3.4 A study on weight-lifters found that mental practices can be as effective as physical practice, resulting in actual muscle increases.Visualizing your if-then plan, for instance, could improve your chance of success.

4.Try “attention narrowing”.5 Last year,an NYU study found that focusing on an object on the horizon makes the distance feel shorter, and leads runners to go faster and perform better than those who let their minds wander.

With these helpful strategies, your next personal record might be just around the corner.

A.Plan what to do.

B.Visualize achieving your goal.

C.Finding ways to move past those kinds of experiences is very vital.

D.“Hitting the wall” typically happens around 20 miles into a marathon.

E.There is evidence that saying motivational things to oneself benefits a lot.

F.Runners who focus their eyes on an object in the distance get there faster.

G.Studies show athletes run, bike and swim farther and faster when listening to music.
