    I’ve returned home sound and safe. Thank you very much for your help and kindness while living with your family.
    As you know, when I first set my foot in Britain, I felt quite shy and nervous, for I was not good at English. However, it was you who often encouraged me to interact with others. As a result, my communicative skills gained in fluency and accuracy. What’s more, you are very kind to spare nearly an hour every day to help me practice my spoken English, which greatly built my confidence. During my stay in Britain, you always did what you could to help me out of culture shocks I suffered. Therefore, no words can better express my gratitude to you. Without your help, I couldn’t have made such great progress in English.

    The First Lesson of the New Term, a TV program about how to protect oneself in times of emergency, is meant to provide school students with the knowledge on self-protection. It will help students in case of natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, snowstorms or floods. Many examples show that enough knowledge about self-protection along with enough courage and willpower can help many survive.
    The most recent example is from the earthquake in Sichuan Province in May of 2008. While thousands of school kids were killed by collapsed school buildings, all students from a middle school survived even without a single one being hurt. That’s because of their timely and orderly evacuations (撤离), which they had been drilled in every term.
    It’s good to see this program is the most important activity of a national campaign to make students be aware of personal safety. Chinese Education Ministry has called on all schools nationwide to give lessons on self-protection knowledge in times of emergency every term.

    “Can I see my baby?” asked the happy new mother. The bundle(婴儿包)was placed in her arms and when she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped-the baby has been born without ears. Time, however, proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect except his appearance.

    He grew up, handsome and popular with his fellow students. He developed a gift for literature and music. But for his misfortune, he might have been class president.
    The boy’s father had a talk with the family doctor. “Could nothing be done?” “I believe we could graft(移植)on a pair of outer ears, if they could be donated(捐献),”the doctor decided. So the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice a young man. Two years went by. Then, “You’re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret,” said the father.
    The operation was a brilliant success. His talents blossomed (开花)into genius. School and college became a series of successes. Later he married and entered the diplomatic（外交）service. “But I must know!” he urged his father. “Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.”
    “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know….not yet.” The years kept the secret, but the day did come…. one of the darkest days that ever pass through a son. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket(棺材).Slowly and softly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to let out the secret.
