阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Over the past few years, people seem to have become tired of being told what they can't eat. They also have taken too much advice that doesn't seem effective. They want to hear messages about healthy food. They are understandably worried about some food industry practices and problems.

The food industry puts money-making first.Buyers and companies have been less informed on food safety than they should have been. The result is human cost has been high.

The food industry defends(保卫)itself. It says that it tries to provide as good a product as possible at low prices, as cost is a major consideration in buying food.It is the buyers who are to blame. They are waking up to the hidden costs of cheaper food.Chicken burgers, for example, may have only a little chicken in them.

The increasing organic(有机的)food market shows that people are prepared to pay more for fruits and vegetables that haven't been grown purely(纯的)for its outside look and money business.

There is now a new kind of food called functional food.It contains so-called beneficial(有益的)additives(添加剂), such as fruit drinks with added Vitamin C.It is believed that adding this makes a product healthier. In fact, this unnatural food will become a problem in the future.

If a mother-to-be wants to protect her unborn baby from illness, she needs to eat a special breakfast to which certain additives have been added.Yet she can get these things much more cheaply from other healthier foods, like orange juice or green vegetables. We shouldn't be led to believe that we need to eat these“special,”expensive products to be healthy when most of the good things we need are found in cheaper natural foods.

I buy as much fresh organic food as possible.I believe that future studies will show that eating organically will make us healthier.I also enjoy them more and feel strongly like supporting the organic farmer's cause.

In the U.S., people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without first asking if it will disturb them.

At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.

Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.

Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself.

Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal.

Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

Which statement is true?

A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know.

B. Tips shouldn’t be given to the waiter or waitress.

C. Orange juice is served before you order

D. American people would not light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smoking.

What does the underlined word “doggie bag” mean in the article? It means ______.

A. a bag with a picture of a dog on it

B. a bag used to carry dogs

C. a small bag for taking the food left over home to enjoy it later

D. a small bag for taking the food left over home for dogs

Sunday dinner is _______.

A. a dinner in the evening               B. a big noon meal

C. a big lunch Sunday                  D. a supper on Sunday

If a person pays 200 yuan in a restaurant, how many tips are given to the waiter?

A. 30 yuan.       B. 60 yuan.        C. 80 yuan.        D. 90 yuan.

Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions—mistaken ideas.

One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It’s ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid ethnocentrism, it’s necessary to study the different elements(组成部分)of culture: language, values and attitudes, and customs and manners.

Language

A. knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can communicate directly. Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.

Values are people’s basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad . An attitude is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence international business. For example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.

Customs and manners

Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For example, in the United States,  it is the custom to have salad (色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after. It’s not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn’t sell well because the French don’t usually drink juice with breakfast.

1.A. knowledge of the local language allows international business people _________.

A. to be more open with their customers

B. to communicate without outside help

C. to express their thoughts indirectly

D. to have a better idea of their own culture

2.The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of ________.

A. manners        B. values        C. attitudes        D. customs

3.What would be the best title for the text?

A. Misconceptions in Business            B. Basic Beliefs in Business

C. International Business Culture           D. Successful International Business

4.The author’s purpose of writing this article is to tell people ___________

A. how to take a right attitude in business

B. how to avoid misunderstandings in business

C. how to use a local language in business

D. how to act politely and properly in business
