5.When we talk about a library,we may think of shelves and shelves lined with books. But a new library set to open this fall in Texas won't have any books----at least not the kind you can leaf through..
There will be 10,000 digital books available for loan(借出)in the BiblioTech library in Bexar County,Texas.About 1.7 million county residents will be able to check out the books online without leaving their homes. The library will also provide 100 e-readers for people to borrow. In the library, people can work, study and access the Internet using dozens of computer stations.
"We wanted to find a cheap, effective way to bring reading and learning to the county and also focus on the change in the world of technology,"Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, the man who started the project, told reporters.
Digital-only academic libraries already exist in the US.The University of Texas at San Antonio opened the first in 2010,and officials say it's been a success. Many public libraries even offer digital books in addition to paper copies. But Biblio Tech will be the country's first completely paperless public library system.Tucson,Arizona, and Newport Beach,California, attempted to open bookless public libraries in 2002 and 2011,respectively,but both ended up offering paper books after public outcry.
However,Residents of Tucson and Newport Beach lived close to libraries and could easily get to them. Many areas of Bexar County,on the other hand, lack public libraries,so residents don't have easy access to books.Wolff hopes Biblio Tech will solvethat problem.
Critics argue against digital-only libraries, saying many people prefer to see and hold actual books. Some say books with pictures, such as children's books and how-to books, work better than digital books.Others say people who aren't comfortable with technology won't be able to use the paperless libraries. They also point out that many digital books are not available for libraries to purchase for their collections.
But supporters of digital libraries say these institutions will make books available to more people, like the residents of Bexar County.Wolff himself, who collects print books, says he doesn't intend paperless libraries to replace traditional ones, but to exist alongside them."People are always going to want books,"he says."But the world is changing."

解答 CCABD
71.C  细节理解题.根据第二段第二句"About 1.7 million county residents will be able to check out the books online without leaving their homes"居民能够网上借书不用离开家可知Bibio Tech图书馆可以让人们即可在图书馆看电子书也可在家看电子书.故选C.
72.C   细节理解题.根据第四段最后一句"Tucson,Arizona, and Newport Beach,California, attempted to open bookless public libraries in 2002 and 2011,respectively,but both endedup offering paper books after public outcry."图森、亚利桑那…尝试开办无纸化图书馆,但由于民众抗议最终还是提供纸张书,可知这些开办仅数字化的图书馆失败了.故选C.

15.Whenever I see anyone buying a National Lottery ticket,I want to stop them and ask if they know just where their money is going.
The lottery money is supposed to go to charity,but it makes me angry to see some of the so-called"good causes"that it's being used to support.Also,Camelot,the organizers,have made a profit of£10.8million in five months.We hear that a lot of that money is boosting(increasing) the pay packets of the company's bosses.
For the past 10years I've been helping to raise funds for a cancer research charity called Tenovus.My husband,Sandy,died from cancer 11years ago when he was only 51.There's been a long line of deaths in our family through cancer and it's been destructive.I've also lost two sisters-in-law,my brother,Michael,my father-in-law and my father.That's apart from several close friends

I'm not against people playing the National Lottery,but they should think about what they're doing.The chances of winning the cumulative amount of money are so small; they might as well throw their money away.The Government tells us that the proceeds (收益)are going to things like the arts and sports,but what about the National Health Service?They should give some cash to that,too.How can they justify spending ridiculous amounts of cash on so-called works of art like display of potatoes or buying up Winston Churchill's papers at a cost of£12million?
So who really are the winners in the National Lottery?When I think of all that money people could be donating to cancer research,I could weep.It's time people realized how charities across the country are suffering because of the National Lottery.It's disappointing and so frustrating.

10.We often see wind-horse flags in Tibetan areas. They are long cloths on which pictures of horses and scriptures(经文)are printed.People often put these flags on top of houses,or leave them where a vehicle accident happened. They prevent evil spirits from injuring people again.
A wind-horse flag can be white, yellow, red, green or blue. These five colors symbolize the five elements that form the world; earth, water, fire, wind and sky.Another explanations that red is the sun, green is the grassland, yellow is the earth, blue is the sky,and white is the cloud.
The wind-horse flag originated with a monk who obtained a scripture from India. When he crossed a river,he carelessly dropped the scripture into the water. He quickly saved the scripture and spread it out on a big rock to dry as he sat in meditation(默想).Suddenly violent thunder sounded like drums. The monk felt liberated(解放的)from all of his sadness, and when he opened his eyes he saw that the scripture had been blown into the sky by a strong wind. Finally,he went straight to heaven.
In order to honor the spirit of the monk and the Buddhist scripture, people printed the scripture on a piece of cloth and hung it up between the sky and the earth as though the scripture was flying in the sky.

15.While many Chinese overseas artists are switching to other more profitable fields,Huang Shanye,a painter of the Zhuang ethnic group, stands out as an exception. His art has gradually earned him fame over the course of his more than 20 years in the United States. He was even able to leave behind his steady job as an art teacher and fully devote himself to what he describes as a pursuit(追求) of beauty.
The common theme of Huang's many works lies in the combination of traditional Chinese elements and Western painting techniques."I apply Chinese calligraphy(书法),paper cutting, facial makeup of Peking Opera--all the things that I can find in traditional Chinese culture--to Western oil painting,"Huang said at an exhibition held recently in his home county of Montgomery,Maryland in the US,where friends and neighbors had come to view some of his work.
One of Huang's works in the show, which had been featured on the exhibition's flier(广告传单),served as a good example.Titled In Harmony, the painting shows two green dragons facing one another on a golden plate--a characteristic of Chinese tradition.Huang decorated the surface with the words"peace"and"dragon",both in Chinese and in English.Michele Cohen, director of the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery, pointing to Huang's In Harmony, says:"I think this work really shows how an artist can combine one tradition with another, and it really comes out in a mixed form."
In 1998,American composer Silas Huff met Huang at an exhibition and was moved by Huang's sketch Tapestry of Dreams, which was later realized into a large-scale work consisting of a dozen 1-by-1-meter panels of paintings describing the traditions and longings of Huang's people.
Inspired by the work,Huff composed a 25-minute symphony(交响乐),Spring Song Festival, made up of Chinese folk melodies.Ten years later when Huff and Huang reconnected,Huff was able to bring two ballet schools on board and create a ballet based on the symphony. The work was performed at LaGuardia Performing Art Center in New York in the spring of 2009,with Huang's Tapestry of Dreams as a background.
