Last Sunday, some of my classmates and I went to the West Lake for fun. I noticed an old dustman collecting rubbish throw about by visitors. He was obviously having great difficulty collect some small items, especially cigarette butts. An idea was occurred to me. Why not help him collect rubbish? Much of their joy, all my classmates agreed and were willing help. So we work hard together with the dustman and collected lots of rubbish. Then we parted but waved farewell to the thankful dustman. Tiredly as I was, I felt very happy. I truly believe we’ll have an harmonious society if everybody takes action. How a fine deed!

【答案】1. throwthrown

2. collectcollecting

3. was 去掉

4. theirmy

5. willing to help

6. workworked

7. butand

8. Tiredlytired

9. ana

10..HowWhat

be willing to do sth乐意做某事,为固定搭配,所以需在willing后加to help。

该句为as引导的倒装句,这里as作尽管讲,正常语序为as I was tiredly。

What

【题目】 Although small business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, little attention has been paid to the need of young people, and even less to the children living on the street or in difficult condition.

Over the past nine years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children and develop opportunities for street children to earn income.

The S.K.I. Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Street children who took part in it were given bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages. A similar program was taken up in Bangalore, India. The Shoe Shine Collective was a program with the Y.W.C.A. in the Dominican Republic. The children in this project were lent money to buy shoe shine boxes. They were also given a safe place to store their equipment, and facilities for individual savings plans. The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a program with the Red Cross Society and the Y.W.C.A. Street youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit.

During the program, The S.K.I. and partner organizations have drawn lessons from the past: First of all, being a businessman is not for everyone, nor for every street child. And it is important for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills. Secondly, small loans are provided firstly for buying fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shine kits and basic building materials for a market stall. As the children gain experience, they can be given more loan amounts. And all S.K.L. programs have charged interest on the loans. Generally the rates have been lower than bank rates. Most importantly, it is believed that credit must be given with other types of support that help the young develop key life skills as well as productive businesses.

1How does S.K.I. help the street children?

A.By giving the street children chances to go to school.

B.By encouraging the public to give money to street children.

C.By creating chances for street children to make money.

D.By drawing the attention of governments to help street children.

2Street youths can be lent money to buy shoe shine boxes in _______.

A.The Dominican RepublicB.Zambia

C.IndiaD.Sudan

3The underlined word “assets” in the last paragraph probably can be replaced by _______.

A.clothingB.vehicleC.equipmentD.belongings

4From the last paragraph we know _______.

A.each child can only enjoy one kind of loan

B.not all loans should be linked to training programs

C.any child can apply for the business training and loan

D.the children have to pay back slightly more money than they borrow

【题目】Life-Changing Science Discoveries

Here’s a look at some discoveries that have changed the world. It’s impossible to rank their importance, so they’re listed in the order they were discovered.

Micro-organism

Before French chemist Louis Pasteur began experimenting with bacteria in the 1860s, people did not know what caused disease. He not only discovered that disease came from micro-organisms, but also realized that bacteria could be killed by heat and disinfectant(消毒剂). This idea caused doctors to wash their hands and disinfect their instruments, which has saved millions of lives.

Penicillin

Antibiotics are powerful drugs that kill dangerous bacteria in our bodies that make us sick. In 1928, British Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, penicillin, which he grew in his lab. Without antibiotics, infections like strep throat could be deadly

DNA

On February 28, 1853, James Watson of the United States and Francis Crick of England made one of the greatest scientific discoveries in history. The two scientists found the structure of DNA. Our genes are made of DNA and determine how things like what color hair and eye we’ll have. In 1962, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for this work. The discovery has helped doctors understand diseases and may someday prevent some illnesses like heart disease and cancer.

X-rays

Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physicist, discovered X-rays in 1895. X-rays go right through some substances, like flesh and wood, but are stopped by others, such as bones and lead. This allows them to be used to see broken bones or explosives inside suitcases, which makes them useful for doctors and security officers. For this discovery, Roentgen was awarded the first-ever Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

1What did Louis Pasteur contribute to the world?

A. He discovered bacteria.

B. His findings helped save lives.

C. He found ways to grow bacteria.

D. His discovery won a Nobel Prize.

2Which discovery was made by two scientists from different countries?

A. Micro-organism. B. Penicillin.

C. DNA. D. X-rays.

3Why is the discovery of X-rays important?

A. It can be used to see through bones and lead.

B. It can help us to know why we are different.

C. It is useful for doctor and security officers.

D. It is used to kill dangerous bacteria in our bodies.

4What is common among the discoveries above?

A. They can help to prevent certain diseases.

B. They are all related to medical fields.

C. They are awarded the Nobel Prize.

D. They are all made in Europe.

【题目】On a clear night, you can see a sky paced with stars. But you can’t see planets orbiting any of these stars, even with the strongest Earth—based telescopes. Astronomers reported that they discovered seven Earth—sized planets orbiting a nearby star called TRAPPIST – 1 in February. They had to rely on indirect evidence to tell them that the planets are there. By doing some math, they figured out the number of planets and the distance of their orbits.

TRAPPIST – 1 is a red dwarf (红矮星), much smaller than our sun, but larger than Jupiter (木星). If the sun were the size of a basketball, TRAPPIST – 1would be the size of a gold ball. This star is one of our closest neighbors, just like the moon to the earth in space.

When astronomers using Earth-based telescopes to study TRAPPIST – 1,they noticed that every once in a while, it became slightly dim(昏暗). They decided that a planet must be passing in front of the star, blocking part of the light. This dimming would come and go as the planet orbited the star, passing alternately (交替地) behind and in front of the star regularly.

By making careful observations, astronomers expected to get a rough idea of the planet’s size from the pattern of dimming light. But the light level changed often and not at evenly spaced (均匀间隔的) times. The astronomers had to conclude they were looking at more than one planet! To get additional data, NASA’s spritzer Space Telescope measured TRAPPIST –1’s brightness nearly continuously for 20 days, catching 34 crossings of planets in front of the star. Sorting through the mess of data, the astronomers found that the innermost planet completes its orbit in 1.5 Earth days, while the outermost planet takes 20 days. Once you know how long it takes each planet to complete an orbit, you can work out how far it is from the star compared with the other planets.

The TRAPPIST – 1 planets are not alone. So far, astronomers have found more than 3,400 planets that orbit other stars.

1How did astronomers know the number of planets orbiting TRAPPIST –1?

A. They used their eyes. B. They used telescopes.

C. They performed some calculation. D. They made some guess.

2How does the author introduce TRAPPIST – 1 in paragraph 2?

A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.

C. By providing research results. D. By listing some numbers.

3What probably causes the star TRAPPIST – 1 to be slightly dim?

A. The telescope’s failure. B. The cloud floating around.

C. The star’s moving. D. The passing planets.

4What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A. The ways to get the information of the planets.

B. The introduction of the planets.

C. The distances of the planets to the star.

D. The astronomers’ effort of exploring TRAPPIST – 1.

【题目】Palema Malhotra and her husband Anil Malhotra have spent the last 25 years buying the waste agricultural land and reforesting it, to return the land to a bio – diverse rainforest for elephants, birds and other creatures.

The couple owns 300 acres of land in Brahmagiri, India. They have spotted more than 300 kinds of birds as well as many rare and threatened animal species. But, this was not the scene in 1991 when Anil and Pamela came to this part of the country. “When I came here, it was a wasteland. The owner wanted to sell because he couldn’t grow coffee or anything else,” says Anil who worked in the real estate(房地产)and restaurant business in the US before moving to India. “For me and Pamela, this was what we were looking for all our life.”

The couple had a love for nature from their childhood. When the Malhotras came to India, the pollution horrified them. “That was when we decided to do something to reclaim(开垦)the forest in India,” says Anil. “We were not looking for money. Acquisition, protection and reclamation of forested lands and wildlife habitat, where vital water sources have their origin, is the only way to save ourselves,” explains Anil.

They sold what they owned in America, bought the first 55 acres and began to grow a forest. Soon they bought the land nearby as well. “Many of the farmers considered their holdings ‘wasteland’ as very little grew on it and were happy to get money,” says Anil.

Hunting and poaching(偷猎)was a challenge and often the locals did not understand what this couple was doing, so it required a lot of talking to create awareness.
