Dear Jason,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to ask you to do me a favor. It’s about an English speech contest with the title An Unforgettable Experience in High School, which I’m going to take part in this Saturday. I’ve finished my draft, but I find it still far from satisfactory.
I’m not sure of the usage of some words. There may also be some mistakes in grammar and sentence structures. Would you be so kind to spare some time to check them out and improve my article? If it’s convenient to you, please send it back by Thursday afternoon.
I’d appreciate it if you could give me your guidance. Looking forward to your reply. (113 words)
Yours,
Li Hua

It’s about an English speech contest with the title An Unforgettable Experience in High School, which I’m going to take part in this Saturday. Contest with此处是形容词短语作定语,修饰先行词 an English speech,且此句中又有which引导的非限制性定语从句,同样修饰 an English speech; There may also be some mistakes in grammar and sentence structures. 此句是There be 句型的变体等。
文章还使用了大量短语 do sb a favor帮某人一个忙,take part in 参加,far from satisfactory并不满意,be sure of 确信,spare time to do sth 抽出时间干某事等。固定句型 “If it’s convenient to you,如果你方便的话I’d appreciate it if …如果…我将不胜感激”等的使用使文章内容更具有层次感,也使语言更加连贯。

【题目】阅读理解。
According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to help care for them in old age should hope they have daughters because they are likely to be twice as attentive overall.
The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, a sociologist at Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.
Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 older Americans concluded that gender(性别) is the most important predictor(预示物) of whether or not people will actively care for elderly parents.
In a paper being presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men statistically likely provide less care.
Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over-50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.
“Sons reduce their relative care-giving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”
“This suggests that sons pass on parent care-giving responsibilities to their sisters.”
In the UK, the 2011 census(人口普查) showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.
But many are doing so at the risk of their own health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full-time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts(相对应的人) who are not carers.

【3】What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A. People should give up their jobs to care for the elderly.
B. Many care providers work longer hours than others.
C. People shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.

【4】The author develops the text by _______.

【题目】阅读理解。
Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real talk I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!
【1】What did the author’s classmates think about his report?
A. Controversial. B. Ridiculous.
C. Boring. D. Puzzling.
【2】Why was the author confused about the task?
A. He was unfamiliar with American history.
B. He followed the advice and flipped a coin.
C. He forgot his teacher’s instruction.
D. He was new at the school.
【3】The underlined word “burning” in Para. 3 probably means _______.
A. annoyed B. ashamed
C. ready D. eager
【4】In the end, the author turned things around _______.
A. by redoing his task
B. through his own efforts
C. with the help of his grandfather
D. under the guidance of his headmaster
