President Obama ranks 15th out of 44 in a poll of the best and worst Presidents while former President George W.Bush earns a place in the bottom five, according to the Siena College Research Institute's recent survey released Thursday

Obama won a top ten place in two skill set categories, communication ability(7th)and ability to compromise(用折衷的方法解决争端)(10th), and in two personality trait categories, imagination(6th)and intelligence(8th).Background, described as family, education, and experience, proved his lowest score at 32nd.

This is the 5th time the institute has conducted the survey of U.S.presidents, which is done a year after a new president takes office. The first survey was done in 1982."Obviously, there's not great validity to the poll since the Presidents have only been in office for one year," says the survey's co-director and statistician Douglas Lonnstrom."But it's a benchmark for us to see how they move."

Presidents tend to rank around 20th while they are in office, and Obama is no exception. His actions over the next few years will decide if he stays roughly the same like Reagan-who moved from 16th to 20th, 22nd, 16th again, and finally to 18th this year-or like Bush, who fell from 23rd to 39th.

Franklin D.Roosevelt has held his title as top president since 1982 with the same four following as top five:Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.

The survey, which ranks Presidents using 20 different factors, shows Jefferson was the most intelligent president, Richard Nixon was the worst at honesty and avoiding serious mistakes, Lincoln had the best overall ability, and Washington was the best leader.

Japan escaped the world's most powerful earthquake in two and half years on Friday with only 400 injuries, most of them minor.

Damage from the pre-dawn quake-measuring 8 on the Richter scale-was relatively light, not only because it struck deep under the ocean but because Japan's population was prepared for such an event.

Power and water supplies were cut off for several hours after the event. There were no reports at 4:50 am (local time). Two fishermen are still missing, though. Police suspect they have been swept away by the tsunami (huge ocean wave) that followed the earthquake.

A wide area of the island suffered damage: roads were blocked, fishing boats sunk, and part of the ceiling of Kushiro airport, 900 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, caved in. Kushiro, a city of 190,000 people, was believed to be the hardest hit.

In the nearby city of Tomakomai, black smoke and flames rose into the sky from an oil tank fire. There were no injuries though, and the fire was contained within hours. Officials said 188,700 barrels of crude oil were lost.

Residents were shaken by the event, but stayed calm despite some 25 aftershocks-at least one registering 7.1 on the Richter scale.

The quake was the strongest worldwide since the 8.4-magnitude quake of June 23, 2001. That, near the coast of Peru(秘鲁), killed 74 people.

Takeshi Matsumura, a Hokkaido government official, said 455 people were confirmed injured by late Friday.

Only 28 were seriously hurt, mostly suffering from broken bones. Located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.

Growing levels of air pollution from power plants and automobiles have reduced flower fragrances (芬芳) by up to 90 percent in the US.That is compared with pre-industrial levels,a new study has found.
The trend is unpleasant for human noses, but may be life - threatening for bees and butterflies.
"Many insects find flowers by folowing the scent(香味) produced by those flowers," said the studies lead author Jose D.Fuentes,an environmental scientist at the University of Virginia.
"The increasing pollution makes it difficult for them to locate the flowers and feed on their nectar(花蜜)."
Scientists have alrady known that flowers produce scent molecules(分子) that bond with pollutants. The process breaks down the plants' sweet smell.
With more pollution in the air,the scent molecules don't remain effective as long and travel shorter distances on the wind.
The new study suggests that in the mid - 19th century, when pollution levels were first recorded, scent molecules would have been able to travel some 1,000 to 1,200 meters.
Today,in the polluted air found downwind of large cities, scentst may only make it some 200 to 300 meters.
