【题目】We talk about people being “colour-blind” but very few of us are. Even those who describe themselves as colour-blind are normally just colour lack. A strongly, colour-blind person will still be able to tell 20 different colours, compared to the 100 or so that normal-sighted people see.

Pingelap, a tiny island in the Pacific, is a beautiful spot but one that has a’ genetic trouble. It is known as Colour-blind Island because so many people who live on this remote island can only sec in black and white.

Not being able to see in colour is bad enough. But one is lander, Herrol, who’s a fisherman, also struggles in full sunlight because all he sees is a painful burnt-out image. “I find it difficult to go outside in the sun,” he says, “because when it’s sunny I cannot see to do my work.”

But if being truly colour-blind is rare, why is it that around 10% of the population of Pingelap live in a totally black and white world?

Well,we know that in 1780 the population of Pingelap was all but wiped out by a tsunami (海啸). As few as 20 people survived, one of whom was the king. It’s believed he had a genetic fault that causes colour-blindness and he passed this fault on to his many generations.

There is one advantage. Herrol can see well, really well, in the dark. So when it gets dark, Herrol and his friends get in their boats and hunt flying fish. They hang up flaming torches and the fish are attracted to the flames. “This type of fishing is fun,” Herrol says, “especially if we catch plenty. So even though it’s hard work we enjoy it.”

B. He is interested in burnt-out images.

C. He likes taking photos very much.

3Why are about one-tenth of people in Pingelap seriously colour-blind?

A. Because Pingelap often suffers from tsunamis.

B. Because the king had an unlucky marriage.

C. Because the king’s genetic fault played a role.

D. Because the king made a serious mistake.

4What would be the best title for the text?

【题目】 The negative (负面的) health effects of sleep shortages during the week can’t be changed by marathon weekend sleep sessions, according to a new study.

Researchers have long known that routine sleep deprivation (缺乏) can cause weight gain and increase other health risks, including diabetes. But there are still some people who hope that shutting off the alarm on Saturday and Sunday will repay the weekly sleep debt and remove any ill effects.

The research, published in Current Biology, ruins those hopes. Despite complete freedom to sleep in and nap during a weekend recovery period, participants in a sleep laboratory who were limited to five hours of sleep on weekdays gained nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced metabolic disruption (代谢紊乱) that would increase their risk for diabetes over the long term. While weekend recovery sleep had some benefits after a single week of inadequate sleep, those gains were wiped out when people returned right to their same sleep schedule the next Monday.

“If there are benefits of catch-up sleep, they’re gone when you go back to your routine. It’s very short-lived,” said Kenneth Wright, who led the research. “These health effects are long-term. It’s kind of like smoking once was — people would smoke and wouldn’t see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice. I think sleep is in the early stage of where smoking used to be.”

Wright said that the study suggests people should prioritize sleep — cutting out the optional “sleep stealers” such as watching television shows or spending time on electronic equipment. Even when people don’t have a choice about losing sleep due to child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about prioritizing sleep in the same way they would think about a healthy diet or exercise.

1What had the researchers already known before doing the new research?

A.The actual benefits of weekend recovery sleep.

B.Harm to health caused by the lack of routine sleep.

C.People’s habit of shutting off the alarm during holidays.

D.The relationship between body weight and sleep amount.

2Kenneth Wright mentioned smoking to _________.

A.call on smokers to completely abandon smoking

B.advise people to go to sleep when they want to smoke

C.show people have known the harm brought by smoking

D.show people will someday notice the bad effects of sleep deprivation

3What does the underlined word “prioritize” probably mean?

A.Have a low opinion of something.

B.Increase the amount of something.

C.Cut down something that isn’t necessary any more.

D.Treat something as being more important than others.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Weekend Catch-up Sleep Is a Lie

B.Bad Sleep Habits Are Harmful to Health

C.A New Study Has an Unexpected Discovery

D.Advantages and Disadvantages of Catch-up Sleep

【题目】 As William Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. “We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu. These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,” said Harvard Professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu, China’s Greatest Poet, a new BBC documentary(纪录片) broadcast on April 7.

Aimed at introducing the charm and beauty of traditional Chinese literature to viewers around the globe, the documentary invited famous British actor Ian McKellen, who played the wizard(巫师) Gandalf in the film series The Lord of the Rings, to read 15 of Du’s poems that have been translated into English.

The one-hour film talks about the poet’s life experiences in detail. Born in 712, Du lived under the government of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (713-756), a time marked by extraordinary prosperity(繁荣), inclusiveness (包容) and cultural achievement. However, as the An Lushan Rebellion of 755 broke out in the country, Du, the former civil servant(文职人员) at the Tang court, had to take his family on the road as refugees(难民), and put up with starvation and suffering. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing and about 1,500 poems have been kept over the ages.

“Chinese people really value the recording of history and Du is better than anyone at reflecting(反映) history in his poetry. That’s because historical events are mirrored in his own life and spiritual journey,” Zeng Xiangbo, a professor of ancient Chinese literature at Renmin University of China, told China Daily.

Even though he never held a high position in the government, Du still cared about common people. For example, in the poem My Cottage Unroofed By Autumn Gales , he wrote that “Could I get mansions covering ten thousand miles, I’d house all scholars poor and make them beam with smiles. ” “That’s why he was honored as a Poet Sage by later generations. A difficult life and his spirit of concern about the world helped him create so many masterpieces,” Shi Wenxue, a cultural critic based in Beijing, told the Global Times.

D.Because his poetry is a good reflection of history.

3The poem mentioned in the last paragraph is intended to _________.

A.explain Du Fu’s position in the government

B.show Du Fu’s concern about ordinary people

C.tell the readers what a difficult life Du Fu lived

D.show Du Fu’s intelligence in writing a poem

4What is the passage mainly about?

A.Du Fu’s works gain popularity home and abroad.

B.Chinese literature becomes a hit in the UK.

【题目】Nobody wants to reach the end of their life and experience regret. Instead, we desire to experience satisfaction with the life we’ve been given. 1. To live a life without regret in the future, you should try to stay away from the following four common unhealthy habits.

2It is good to have a destination to go to but it is the journey that matters in the end. Too often, we live our lives from destination to destination. But life is not lived merely in these destinations. In fact, it is far more often lived in the pathways between them. We should appreciate the joy in the journey rather than always hurry to the next destination.

Be defined by your negative circumstances. Each morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most. This is an important truth and an important promise. Our lives should not be defined by the negative circumstances that happened in our past. They may have affected our lives, but they do not write the final chapter. 3

Focus entirely on yourself. The size of our universe becomes smaller considerably when we place ourselves at the center. 4On the contrary, those who see their life as an opportunity to bring joy to others quickly find it themselves.

5Every excess (过量) adds burden to our lives. And yet we continue to pursue and accumulate more than we need—more houses, more cars, more clothes, and more dishes. Owning less means less cleaning, less burden, less anxiety, and less stress each day. It provides the space and opportunity to pursue the things in life that bring lasting satisfaction to our lives.

A. Blame everybody else.

B. Carry more than you need.

C. It is we ourselves who hold the pen.

D. Miss the joy of the journey for the destination.

E. Only a fool believes the wide road is necessarily the right road.

F. The fact is that too many people experience regret at the lives they chose to live.

G. And the people who are most focused on themselves are the least satisfied in life.

【题目】Counterfeit(假的) medicines are a widespread problem in developing countries. Like other counterfeits, they look like real products. But counterfeit drugs may contain too little or none of the active ingredients of the real thing.

People do not get the medicine they need. And in some cases, counterfeits cause death. Twenty children in Bangladesh died last year after being given acetaminophen(对乙酰氨基酚).The medications contained ingredients that looked, smelled and tasted like the real thing. The medicine was produced by a local drug company that used a dangerous substitute to save money.

The problem of counterfeit medicines is especially serious in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The WHO estimates that up to thirty percent of medicines on sale in many of those countries are counterfeit. The problem is less widespread among industrialized countries. The WHO says counterfeits make up less than one percent of the illegal drug market in countries like the United States, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.

But the agency also says as much as fifty percent of the medicine sold on the Internet is counterfeit.

Much is being done to fight counterfeit drugs. Several companies are developing ways to make counterfeits easier to identify. And there are existing methods, like a machine that can quickly identify chemicals in pills to confirm if the pills are real. Other ideas include things like special tracking codes for drug packages. People could send a text message with the code and get a message back, which proves that what they bought is listed in a database. Some drug makers and other companies put three-dimensional images called holograms(全息图)on their products as a security device.

1Last year twenty children in Bangladesh died because of _________.

A. unreal drugs

B. online medicines

C. acetaminophen

D. unclean water

2We can draw a conclusion from the passage that___________ .

A. it is very cheap and convenient to buy medicines online.

B. we had better not buy medicines online.

C. more and more people will buy products online.

D. medicine companies don’t pay much attention to counterfeit drugs.

3What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. It reveals(揭露) the reasons why counterfeit drugs are widespread.

B. Special tracking codes for drug packages are used to identify counterfeits.

C. It shows the danger of counterfeit drugs.

D. Some measures are being taken to fight counterfeit drugs.

4Which of the following country may have serious problems of counterfeit medicines?

A. Canada. B. India.

C. New Zealand. D. Japan.
